Chapter 2 - A Hero is Born 1-2

-12 years later-

The sun arrises in a bustling city in a valley protected by walls and a castle. In the fortress on the hill belonging to the Dragon's Bane Order, clacking of two wooden swords resounds throughout a courtyard atop a one of the round towers as two men duel, a banner knight of the order and a child barely old enough to wear the most basic of armor.

'I can't seem to do anything to him!' the thoughts raced through the mind of Luke, a young man now as he is practically bullied by the knight. 'my body is to tired to keep up with him, how is this even training anymore?!' a clean strike hits him on the chest sending him back hitting the ground.

"Your tired, distracted, undisiplined, and weak." The knight tosses aside his training sword. "Those mages must have read the stars wrong, how can someone like you be the prodigy." the child sits there defeated still recoiling from the blow to his chest, his breathing refusing to return to normal as his adrenaline runs thin and he colapses further to his back, his body shaking. 'fuck... why did the elders assign this psycho as my mentor if all hes going to do is beat me.'

"Not even a word to say in defence of yourself? Just going to lay there?... gods you really are just a kid arn't you?" The knight walks to the stairs and goes down leaving him laying there on the roof bruised and battered.

Eventully Luke gets up, his legs still shaking beneath him. With a great effort he lifts the chainmail shirt off and tosses it aside. "hah, I've been waiting to do that since I put the thing on" He starts on his way down the stairs and opens the to the tower's room he'd been staying in.

Inside was his bed, a table and chair, and by the balcony stood a middle aged man, a labouror from the fort who had always been kind to Luke. "Mr. William?" the man turned to face Luke as he entered the room "Ah training is finally over? I came this morning but you were still up in the yard with that new mentor."

"Mentor my ass, all he does is strike me till I can't stand" Luke ventured back as he colapsed into his chair. "So why did you stop by?" the man shifted about walking through the room uncertain of how to proceed

"Well I stopped by to wish you a happy birthday, I know that the knights' gift was a new mentor, but I figured you'd enjoy my gift a bit more." As he said this he pulls a black leather bound book from underneath his tattered cloak.

"A book? hate to break it to you but the order probably has at least two more copies in the library" responded Luke. "Not of this book, it's not the kind the order would want you to have acess to" William stated as he handed the book to Luke. After taking a closer look Luke saw the emblem of a tooth on the cover made from a silvery metal, a similar hue of silver in the embroidored edges, clearly stylish and... to be frank more than the old man could afford, Luke looked up perplexed.

"What is this? It looks... expensive", "It's a grimoire, a type of magic focus which can teach you spells... Its been in my family for generations passed down to the eldest." replied the man as he settled down in a chair opposite from Luke. "look, Mr. William this is amazing but I don't think I can... shouldn't you give this to your child one day?" he said as his fingeres traced along the silvery emblem.

"I... My son... he was taken from me at a young age and I... honestly after all these years I think.. point is I believe that it'd only be right that this should go to you" Luke falls silent, how should he even respond to that. Sure this man has been there for him but to accept this would be accepting him as though he was his father figure.

"Thank you... I'll gladly accept this." He ran his fingers along the precisely cut edges of the paper. "And I'm sorry to hear the passing of your son. I know I can't replace him but I am glad you see me that way... as strange as it is I never had anyone to be like a parent for me... just tutors and coaches who always expect things of me.."

William stands there, touched it. "Lucas... I'm sure that where ever your parents are they are proud of you, and I'm sure that they just want you to be happy above anything else"
