Caroline twisted and turned in her princess canopy bed, she hadn't been able to sleep all night. She had known it would get to this, she knew one day Marcus would tell her he didn't find her of use to him any longer and she would go.
When he had slept with her that night three months ago in their drunken state, she had known she had conceived his miracle baby and was ready to keep the child as a reminder of that part of her life, away from Marcus.
She heard the door open and held the sheets tighter, shutting her eyes. She should be up and ready for work, another day with Mr Roberts, her boss and husband who just announced their divorce.
"Wake up!" Marcus growled at her and she stirred clutching her head as her eyes fluttered open.
"Good morning Mr Roberts" Caroline muttered as she sat up immediately.
"You should be up by now, you're my secretary not my child." He grounded, Caroline heard the gravel in his voice and wondered why he was upset.
He was the one tossing me aside like an old piece of meat!
"We are still going to Thailand tonight, I thought I would have a Good Night sleep." She argued and Marcus raised a brow in surprise, the prospect of separation was already allowing her to be even bolder. It made his heart twist.
"I don't think you should be arguing" he was saying just as Nina walked in, dressed only in a robe and her hair was tousled in a way that screamed sexual activity, the tendrils framing her beautiful well defined face.
"Urm Marc, I need help with the plumbing in my bathroom. Can you help me check it out?" She purred and Caroline looked up in shock. She hadn't remembered she was still here.
"Have you called the housekeeper?" Marcus asked and she was about to respond when Caroline burped and immediately ran over to the adjourning bathroom, throwing up the wine she had for dinner.
Nina immediately ran forward, a desperate attempt at caring and held her head while she threw up.
"Oh my God Carol! Are you okay?" She asked uselessly, and Caroline nodded with a mere shake of her head.
"Are you pregnant?" she asked again, and Caroline stilled under her touch before finally responding.
"I had a lot to drink last night, it's the drink talking, my hangover finally shows its face." She assured them both as she left the bathroom, avoiding their scrutinizing gaze.
"I would be down in a minute," she said to Marcus and closed the bathroom door behind her, leaving the foolish lovers to their company.
**************
"Do you have all that we need?" Marcus asked as they got ready to pass airport security.
"Yes, all the files and documents. I even signed the divorce papers and have officially slipped in my resignation letter" Caroline said In so many words, Marcus was confused by her bluntness and hostility. He wasn't confused actually, he was just surprised.
For most of their marriage she had been compliant to a fault but very used to her being around, and only occasionally caught glimpses of her defiant and sexy side, like the night they never spoke about four months ago.
"That was oddly specific." He responded as they boarded the plane, staying in the queue.
She said nothing, remembering how perfect he had looked with Nina while she had waved them off.
"Please don't stay away too long, I'll miss you!" Nina had said and she had caught the smug look of joy that was plastered on Marcus' face as they drove off.
They settled in the business flight section and Caroline Dwight of the nauseating feeling she was experiencing.
Her antenatal had started just as soon as she found out she was pregnant, in a hospital far from their home, on the other side of LA, she was covered and her baby was safe but why was she feeling so nauseous today of all days.
"Are you alright?" Marcus asked for the upteempth time that evening and she was so enraged. He noticed how pale she was, her silence was normal, if she wasn't saying something about business then she wasn't saying anything at all.
She has never really liked him and nothing ever made her look at him in the way she had for the first year of their marriage.
He was used to it and that's why he was letting her go and allowing Nina back to his, she was what he deserved, considering how he had treated Caroline, he deserved Nina.
They fastened their seat belts two hours later as the attendant announced their landing.
"Finally," Carol whispered under her breath and held tight to the seat as the plane landed.
Marcus, with his signature scowl on his face carried all of their luggage off the plane. Being cold didn't mean he recognized an Ill person when he saw one, he could see Caroline was unwell and the least he could do was carry their stuff.
"Thailand is a beautiful place," she said as they got in the taxi, aiming at idle conversation.
"I was here once, many years ago." He murmured, this was where he had proposed to Nina.
"It's my first time and probably my last. Thank you for everything" she said suddenly, turning to face him.
He looked at her oddly, wondering if she had gone mad but she laughed.
"Even though it wasn't the best of experiences, working with you gave me a bit of exposure." She muttered, knowing he needed to hear it, by the time the trip was over, she would be away in New York, far away from him.
"The divorce isn't final yet, you're so happy to leave. Am I that and?." He said with a strong face and she let out a short laugh as they got to the hotel they would be staying.
She climbed out of the car and was taken aback by the different smell of the air. She held the car for support and was glad he hadn't noticed.
"Help me hold the trunk up, let me get this stuff out," he grunted and she hurried to the back of the vehicle.
Just as she got there, the earth shook before her eyes and immediately she held her head to steady it.
"Are you okay?" She heard Marcus say and it sounded so distant, at that moment.
The ground left her feet and it was all dark.
