Chapter 19 - Chapter 18. Surprised Visit New year.

As Alexandra settled back into her routine after Luke's return, life seemed to resume its normal pace, albeit with a heightened sense of joy and contentment. Her birthday celebrations had left her with a warm glow, and she cherished the memories of the special moments she had shared with Luke and her loved ones.

A few days after her birthday, Alexandra received a call from her mother, Susan. "Hi sweetheart, I hope you had a wonderful birthday!" Susan's voice was filled with warmth and affection.

"I did, Mom. It was perfect," Alexandra replied, smiling at the memory of Luke's thoughtful surprises.

"We're sorry we couldn't be there with you, but your father and I have something special for you. It should arrive soon," Susan continued.

Alexandra's curiosity piqued. "Oh, Mom, you and Dad didn't have to..."

"Now, now, no arguing," Susan interjected playfully. "We just want to spoil our girl a little."

Alexandra chuckled. "Alright, Mom. Thank you. I can't wait to see what it is."

"We love you, Alexandra. Take care," Susan said before ending the call.

Feeling warmed by her mother's love, Alexandra continued with her day. Later, she received messages and calls from her friends, each offering their belated birthday wishes and congratulations. It was heartwarming to hear from everyone, and Alexandra made a mental note to catch up with each of them soon.

However, amidst the well-wishes from friends and family, there was one persistent presence that she hadn't expected—Nathan. He had been a colleague and occasional friend, but lately, his attention had taken a more personal turn.

That afternoon, Alexandra's phone buzzed with a message from Nathan: "Hey Alexandra, I hope you had an amazing birthday! Would you like to have dinner with me sometime this week? I'd love to catch up."

Alexandra hesitated as she read the message. Nathan was kind and charming, but she had always considered him more of a friend than a romantic interest. She valued their professional relationship and didn't want to jeopardize it with mixed signals.

"Thanks, Nathan," Alexandra typed back carefully. "I had a great birthday. I appreciate the offer, but I think I'll pass this time."

Nathan's reply came almost immediately: "No worries at all! Just thought I'd ask. Let me know if you change your mind. Take care, Alexandra."

She smiled at his understanding response, grateful that he didn't press further. Nathan had always been respectful, and she hoped their friendship could remain unchanged despite the slight awkwardness of the situation.

Later that evening, as Alexandra relaxed at home, there was a knock at her door. Surprised, she opened it to find a delivery person holding a large, beautifully wrapped package.

"Are you Alexandra?" the delivery person asked with a smile.

"Yes, that's me," Alexandra replied, her curiosity piqued.

"This is for you," the delivery person said, handing over the package. "Have a great day!"

"Thank you," Alexandra said, taking the package inside and placing it on her coffee table. She carefully unwrapped it, revealing an assortment of extravagant gifts—a lavish bouquet of flowers, a box of gourmet chocolates, and an expensive-looking bottle of perfume etc.

Confusion clouded Alexandra's mind as she read the accompanying card. It was from Nathan, expressing his warmest wishes for her birthday and hoping she enjoyed the gifts.

Although touched by the gesture, Alexandra felt a pang of discomfort. She appreciated Nathan's thoughtfulness, but the extravagant nature of the gifts felt overwhelming, especially given her feelings for Luke. She couldn't accept such lavish presents from Nathan when her heart belonged to someone else.

With a sigh, Alexandra picked up her phone and dialed Nathan's number. "Hey, Nathan," she said gently when he answered. "Thank you so much for the gifts. They're really lovely, but I'm afraid I can't accept them."

There was a brief silence on the other end of the line. "Oh, Alexandra, I'm sorry if I overstepped," Nathan replied quietly. "I just wanted to make your birthday special."

"I know, Nathan, and I appreciate it," Alexandra reassured him. "But these gifts... they're too much. I hope you understand."

"I understand," Nathan said after a moment. "I apologize if I made you uncomfortable. I'll take them back."

"Thank you, Nathan," Alexandra said gratefully. "I value our friendship, and I don't want anything to change between us."

"Of course," Nathan replied, his tone warm. "Friendship means a lot to me too, Alexandra. I'll see you at work."

With that, they said their goodbyes, and Alexandra felt a mixture of relief and sadness. She hated disappointing Nathan, but she knew it was the right decision. Resolving to talk to him in person when they next saw each other at work, she set the gifts aside to return them the next day.

The following morning, as Alexandra sipped her coffee and prepared for work, her thoughts returned to Luke. She missed him dearly and couldn't wait for their next reunion. Despite the occasional challenges and unexpected moments like Nathan's gifts, she felt fortunate to have such love and support in her life.

As the day unfolded, Alexandra focused on her work, finding comfort in the familiar tasks and interactions with her colleagues. She exchanged smiles and casual conversations, grateful for the camaraderie that surrounded her.

When the afternoon arrived, Alexandra received another unexpected call—this time from Luke. Her heart leaped with joy as she answered the phone. "Luke! Hi," she greeted him warmly.

"Hey, Lex," Luke's voice was filled with affection. "I just wanted to hear your voice. How's your day going?"

"It's going well," Alexandra replied, a smile evident in her voice. "I've been keeping busy."

"I miss you," Luke confessed softly. "Every day apart feels like an eternity."

"I miss you too," Alexandra admitted, her voice tinged with longing. "But we'll be together soon."

Luke's words were reassuring. They talked for a while longer, sharing updates on their lives and making plans for the future. Despite the physical distance between them, their bond remained strong, anchored by love, trust, and unwavering support.

As the conversation drew to a close, Luke's voice softened. "Alexandra, there's something I've been meaning to ask you..."

Alexandra's heart skipped a beat, anticipation coursing through her veins. "Yes, Luke?"

"I know we've been through a lot together," Luke began earnestly. "And I want you to know how much you mean to me. Alexandra, I want us to take the next step. I'd like you to meet my parents."

A sudden wave of nervousness washed over Alexandra. Meeting Luke's parents was a significant step, one she had both anticipated and feared. Her parents, particularly her father, had always been strict about relationships, and Alexandra hadn't yet mentioned Luke to them.

"I... I appreciate that, Luke," Alexandra replied carefully, her mind racing. "But I think it's too early for that. I'm not sure if I'm ready."

Luke's disappointment was palpable, but he nodded understandingly. "I understand, Lex. I don't want to rush you. Whenever you're ready."

Relief flooded through Alexandra as she heard Luke's understanding tone. She knew she needed more time to prepare herself and perhaps find the right moment to introduce Luke to her parents. Until then, she would navigate their relationship carefully, balancing her love for Luke with her family's expectations.

As the weeks passed, Luke and Alexandra continued to cherish their time together, making the most of every moment they could share. Luke surprised Alexandra with another visit for New Year's Eve, determined to ring in the new year with her by his side.

They celebrated in style, attending a vibrant New Year's party and watching fireworks light up the night sky. Luke held Alexandra close as they counted down to midnight, their hearts filled with hope and excitement for the year ahead.

After New Year's, Luke returned to his busy schedule, but their bond remained strong. They found ways to stay connected, sharing moments over video calls and sending each other messages filled with love and longing.

Over the next year and five months, their relationship deepened in ways they hadn't anticipated. They navigated challenges and celebrated milestones together, from birthdays and anniversaries to quiet evenings spent simply enjoying each other's company.

Luke continued to travel for work, but he always made time for Alexandra, prioritizing their relationship despite the demands of his career. Alexandra, in turn, found solace in her work and the unwavering support of her friends and family, even as she navigated the complexities of her relationship with Luke.

Through it all, they learned valuable lessons about patience, communication, and the importance of trust. Their love story continued to unfold, filled with moments of laughter, joy, and occasional challenges that only strengthened their bond.

As they looked towards the future, hand in hand, Luke and Alexandra knew that they were stronger together, ready to face whatever life had in store for them. Their journey was far from over—it was a testament to the enduring power of love and the strength found in being each other's rock.
