Chapter 7 - Childhood Sweethearts

---

As Jason entered the Thompson home, the comforting scent of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the aroma of Mrs. Thompson's famous cookies. The cozy atmosphere immediately put him at ease, reminding him of his own childhood home.

"Lily, look who's here!" Mrs. Thompson called out cheerfully as she led Jason into the living room. Lily, Mr. Thompson's daughter, emerged from the hallway with a bright smile.

"Hey, Jason! Long time no see," Lily greeted him warmly, giving him a quick hug.

"Hey, Lily! It's good to see you too," Jason replied, returning her hug with a friendly smile. He appreciated Lily's genuine enthusiasm; they had always gotten along well whenever their paths crossed at company events.

Mr. Thompson, the editorial staff member whom Jason had worked with closely on several projects, greeted him with a firm handshake. "Jason, good to have you here," he said warmly, gesturing towards the comfortable chairs in the living room.

"Thanks, Mr. Thompson. It's great to be here," Jason replied, taking a seat and admiring the Thompsons' tastefully decorated living room adorned with family photos and a few pieces of travel memorabilia.

As Mrs. Thompson poured coffee for everyone and offered around a plate of cookies, Mr. Thompson leaned forward with a curious smile. "Jason, we've all been eager to hear about the latest issue of 'Captain America.' The twist you put in there was brilliant."

Jason chuckled modestly, appreciating the praise from someone whose opinion he valued. "Thank you, Mr. Thompson. It's always challenging but rewarding to push the boundaries a bit."

Lily, ever curious, jumped into the conversation. "Jason, how do you come up with those ideas? I mean, turning Captain America into such a complex character—it's impressive."

Jason smiled warmly at Lily's interest. "It's a combination of inspiration from classic stories and trying to inject a fresh perspective. Sometimes ideas just hit you out of the blue."

Mrs. Thompson joined in, her eyes sparkling with pride. "Jason, your work has really made an impact. We've been following your career closely, and it's been incredible to see how you've evolved as a creator."

The conversation flowed effortlessly from there, covering upcoming projects at the company, amusing office anecdotes, and shared interests in literature and travel. Despite their professional ties, Jason felt a genuine camaraderie with the Thompson family, their warmth and support touching him deeply.

Soon, Mrs. Thompson announced that dinner was ready. They moved to the dining room, where a spread of delicious homemade dishes awaited them. Mr. Thompson raised his glass in a toast.

"To Jason, the creative force behind our beloved superhero," Mr. Thompson said warmly, earning nods of agreement from everyone.

"To many more successful issues," Jason replied, genuinely touched by their appreciation.

Dinner was served, and Jason felt at ease. He was no stranger to this household.

After the meal, Mrs. Thompson exchanged a knowing glance with Mr. Thompson, who missed the cue but was gently led away by her, leaving the young couple alone.

Jason caught on to Mrs. Thompson's unspoken message and followed Lily as she led him out to the garden.

Both still single, Jason couldn't help but feel a rush of emotions as he looked at Lily standing beside him in the moonlight.

But words escaped him momentarily.

Breaking the silence, Lily pulled out a comic—it was Jason's Marvel American Team.

"Jason, did you really draw this?"

"Yeah, I did."

Impressed, Lily exclaimed, "Wow, Jason! This comic is incredible! You've turned the American Team upside down. Many of our classmates are completely hooked!"

Lily poured out her thoughts enthusiastically, but Jason didn't quite catch on.

"Yeah... that's awesome!" Jason nodded.

"Lily, seriously? I thought I made it pretty clear. Are you pretending not to get it?"

Pouting, Lily playfully teased, "Jason, what's with the shyness? I love your comics, especially this one. Can I be your assistant?"

Realizing the reason behind Lily's excitement, Jason considered her offer. Having Lily's help wouldn't be a problem, but...

"I think we should check with your dad first."

"If he says no, I'll be so mad! But as long as you agree, we'll be good, Jason... big brother... big brother..."

Lily took Jason's hand with a mischievous glint in her eye, causing him to blush. He couldn't resist her playful charm.

Helplessly, Jason relented, "Okay, okay, you win!"

"Yes!" Lily hugged Jason excitedly, "Jason, you're the best!"

She tapped Jason's cheek playfully before darting away, leaving him slightly flustered.

"Deal's a deal!"

Watching Lily skip away happily, Jason chuckled to himself. He touched his cheek where Lily had tapped him, feeling a warmth spread through him.

"Guess heroes really do fall for beauty. Didn't expect it to happen so quickly."

Feeling a mix of excitement and nerves from their interaction, Jason decided to stay a bit longer in the garden, letting the evening breeze calm his thoughts.

Meanwhile, Mr. Thompson, observing the scene from the porch, sighed affectionately.

"That girl is a force of nature. She must get it from her mother!"
