Chapter 52 - Dispersed Teams

Born felt a bit puzzled. He had a feeling that the person he saw might be Angelica.

The petite figure matched Angelica's build.

However, without seeing the face clearly, Born couldn't be sure if it was her.

Thinking of Angelica made him feel wistful.

That sweet girl had suddenly died in his arms, just moments after they had reunited.

Thankfully, he could still use the system to recruit her.

He felt a sense of relief that he hadn't successfully recruited Angelica earlier. Perhaps fate had saved this opportunity for now, to revive her.

Born took a deep breath and tried to contact Stanley again.

But this time, there was no response from Stanley either.

"He's probably out of the mental network's range," Lane said softly.

Born nodded.

The only option now was to fight their way out.

The zombies had split up to chase different groups, which presented an opportunity.

"Once we're out, be careful. Lane, keep covering with the mental network. We'll try to move in a straight line to maximize coverage."

Born gave his instructions and then nodded to the maids.

As for the others, they would have to follow Born and the maids' lead.

As soon as the door opened, a Licker suddenly leaped in.

Teri, at the forefront, quickly drew her blade and performed a precise slash, severing the Licker's hind legs.

The maid squad then swarmed in, drawing their long knives and hacking at the Licker.

Blades flashed, leaving bloody gashes on the Licker until it finally stopped moving.

The 50-person Bladesman synergy could trigger a piercing blade effect, and the probability wasn't too low.

With a dozen people slashing, the blade effect was bound to trigger at least once.

Teri glanced at Born with a look he couldn't quite decipher, leaving him momentarily confused.

But now wasn't the time to dwell on it.

Born led the team forward, killing any zombies they encountered.

As they fought their way through, they managed to gather the scattered teams.

Born glanced at the system's points notifications, which numbered in the hundreds, yet zombies continued to surge at them.

Clearly, there had been only about a hundred zombies earlier.

The number of zombies had noticeably increased.

Suddenly, a piercing alarm blared, and the red light was glaring in the dim environment.

"Damn it, there weren't this many zombies before," Born cursed.

Meanwhile, they had to keep fighting off the zombies, which inevitably led to more casualties.

...

-4 Level, Star Labs Zone A.

This area was far less complicated than the others, serving as the living quarters for the higher-ups and housing many important documents.

Fern stood in front of a room, his eyes gleaming with an unusual light.

Behind him, a squad of 30 had gathered. These were the last 30 people of Star Labs. Including him and Aileen, there were only 32 survivors at the Red Sea branch.

"Captain, the chief is not in a state to be disturbed right now."

Fern turned and glared at the team member who spoke.

"I know what I'm doing."

"Monitor the entire lab. Open up all areas and use sound to lure the zombies to Level -3. Once all the zombies are in -3, seal off the entire area."

With that, Fern pressed the button to open the door and walked into the room.

Inside was a supercomputer.

Dozens of screens, a massive mainframe, and an intricate web of circuits like spider silk filled the room.

Aileen lay over the supercomputer, drooling and looking utterly captivated.

"It's just as I thought, the God Virus—how wonderful!"

"They're all fools. My research direction is correct. I'm right. No, Dudley, Dudley, this is his theory of human evolution!"

Aileen suddenly snapped out of her trance and began typing furiously on the keyboard.

She regained her cold demeanor and turned around, saying calmly, "Did you complete what I asked you to do?"

"Also, make sure to bring Born, Edwin, and Lane here. Your task is clear, and you mustn't let personal feelings interfere..."

Before she could finish her sentence, a loud slap echoed through the room.

Fern's face was dark with anger as he slowly lowered his hand. He had just slapped Aileen.

"She's dead."

"I know," Aileen replied, adjusting her glasses, her gaze never leaving the computer screen.

Typically, when someone is slapped, they at least ask for a reason if not respond with anger.

But Aileen didn't react at all.

"I said, Angelica is dead, dead! She's become a zombie. Look, I know you can see the lab's surveillance!"

Fern yelled frantically.

Aileen finally stopped typing and glanced at the time.

"I have five minutes."

"Aileen, I know I'm just an adopted child, a bodyguard raised to protect you and the second miss, but I grew up with you!"

Fern slowly knelt on the ground, his eyes red and bloodshot.

"You can use her, you can strip her of her will, but why did you send her to die? Why?"

Fern suddenly stood up and grabbed Aileen by the collar.

From childhood, he had been closest to Angelica. In contrast, his relationship with Aileen had always been one of master and servant, superior and subordinate, never changing.

Angelica's death dealt a massive blow to Fern.

Aileen gently brushed Fern's hand away.

"This was an experimental project. As expected, individuals with abilities who die and mutate into zombies start at a higher level. Even without consciousness, they can clearly use their abilities."

"Angelica's abilities were mental and bioelectric. She relied on her mental power to establish neural connections and bioelectricity to control biological behaviors."

"Previously, I thought these abilities had lost their effectiveness. I believed zombies had abandoned neural actions, being driven mainly by the virus. But it turns out that after mutating, Angelica's control over zombies became instinctual, with even less strain. Do you understand what this means?"

Aileen's lips curled slightly. Only when discussing her experimental subjects did she show such interest.

Fern suddenly realized that the Aileen he had known for over twenty years was terrifying, like a demon.

"Don't you have any feelings beyond your experiments?"

As soon as he said this, the smile on Aileen's face froze. Her face, hidden in the shadows, was unreadable.

"Feelings are just the result of hormone secretion."

"As for Angelica, she is connected to Born. Born can revive zombies with no relation to him, so why wouldn't he revive Angelica?"

"Her mutation this time provides us with precise data without any loss to her. Why not?"

Aileen turned back to her work, her fingers moving swiftly over the keyboard.

Lines of complex chemical formulas and precise data appeared on the screen.

Soon, these formed a virus cell.

Aileen stared at everything in front of her, lost in thought.
