Chapter 14 - the investigation continues..

Cyrus stumbled through the door of his house, drenched and shivering. The storm outside had grown more violent, and his clothes clung to him like a second skin. The warmth of the living room was a stark contrast to the cold he'd endured, but it did little to chase away the creeping unease that had settled in his gut.

His father's heavy breathing from the recliner was the only sound in the otherwise silent house. Cyrus didn't want to wake him; he needed time to process everything he'd seen. He slipped into his room, locking the door behind him, and collapsed onto his bed. The old knife was still in his backpack, and he pulled it out, examining the blade as if it might hold some answer. It was a small comfort, but it felt like the only thing grounding him to reality at the moment.

His mind raced with images of the abandoned school. The names, the notes, the ominous warnings—they all seemed to swirl together, forming a chaotic puzzle he couldn't quite piece together. And then there was the feeling of being watched, a sensation that refused to leave him even now, in the safety of his own room.

He took a deep breath and forced himself to focus. His father's warnings had been about an accident, but Cyrus had seen no mention of a specific event in the papers. The accident had been mentioned in passing, like an afterthought, yet it was clear that something more sinister had occurred.

Exhaustion eventually claimed him, and he fell into a restless sleep. The storm continued to rage outside, its thunder rolling like distant cannons. In his dreams, the old school loomed larger, its darkened hallways stretching on forever. Shadows moved and whispered, and the names on the papers seemed to call out to him, urging him to uncover their stories.

Morning came, gray and overcast. The storm had passed, leaving behind a soggy landscape and a sky that threatened more rain. Cyrus awoke with a start, his dreams still vivid in his mind. He sat up in bed, his resolve hardening. He needed answers, and he couldn't let fear stand in his way.

He spent the morning searching online, looking for any information about St. Grey's Academy. There were no official records or news articles—just a few vague mentions on obscure forums and social media sites. Most of it was speculation or ghost stories, with little concrete detail. Frustrated, Cyrus decided to take a different approach.

If the internet couldn't provide the answers, he would need to talk to someone who might know. His father had been adamant about keeping him away from the school, but there had to be others who remembered it—people who had lived in the town before it had been shut down.

He started by asking around the neighborhood, but his inquiries were met with guarded responses or outright avoidance. It seemed that the school was a subject no one wanted to discuss. Undeterred, Cyrus decided to visit the local library. If he couldn't find people willing to talk, perhaps he could find records or old newspapers that might shed some light on the mystery.

The library was a small, dusty building with rows of aging bookshelves. An elderly librarian greeted him with a nod as he walked in, her eyes curious but not unfriendly. Cyrus asked her about any records or archives related to the old school, and she directed him to a small room at the back of the library.

The archives were filled with old newspapers, photographs, and documents. Cyrus spent hours poring over them, searching for any mention of St. Grey's Academy. As he dug deeper, he found fragments of articles and obituaries that seemed to point to a series of mysterious disappearances and incidents tied to the school.

One article caught his eye. It was dated just a few months before the school was closed. The headline read: "Tragic Incident at Local School: Community in Shock." The article described a violent altercation between students that had ended in severe injuries and a subsequent investigation that had been hushed up.

Cyrus's heart raced as he read through the details. The article mentioned that several students had been injured but most murdered in the wake of the incident, and there were vague references to "unexplained phenomena" that had been observed in the school. The story was cut short, and the final paragraphs were marked by an abrupt end, leaving many questions unanswered.

As he continued to read, he found a note in the margin of the article, written in a hand he didn't recognize: "The truth is buried with the school. What they discovered is more terrifying than anyone could imagine."

Cyrus felt a chill run down his spine. It was clear that something deeply unsettling had happened at St. Grey's Academy, something that had been covered up and left to rot in the shadows. He couldn't ignore it any longer. His father's warnings and the school's dark past were intertwined, and he was determined to uncover the truth.

Leaving the library, Cyrus felt a newfound sense of purpose. He knew he couldn't do this alone; he needed to find someone who had been directly involved with the school or had witnessed its downfall. He thought of the old-timers in town, those who had lived through the school's final years. Perhaps they held the key to unlocking the secrets he so desperately sought.

His first stop was the local diner, a place where the town's stories were exchanged over coffee and pie. As he walked in, he spotted an older man sitting at the counter, his face lined with years of experience. He seemed like the type who might know a thing or two about the past.

Cyrus took a deep breath and approached him, hoping that this was the beginning of unraveling the mystery that had haunted him since that fateful night at St. Grey's Academy.
