Chapter 7 - FIRST DAY BACK

After dinner, Lily cleared the table as usual. The routine brought a sense of normalcy, but tonight there was an added layer of excitement. She went to bed extra early, eager for the following day when she would finally be returning to school.

The night passed in a blur of restless dreams, and before she knew it, the first rays of sunlight were peeking through her bedroom window. Lily woke up with a start, the anticipation bubbling up inside her. She lay in bed for a moment, taking in her surroundings.

Her room, though small, was filled with items that reflected her personality and interests. The walls were adorned with posters of her favorite animals and characters from the few books she had managed to collect over the years. Her desk, a bit cluttered, held her new writing materials, a small lamp, and a few cherished knick-knacks. The bedspread, a soft pastel color, added a touch of warmth and comfort to the space.

Lily's nightgown, a simple but cozy garment with little floral patterns, was a bit crumpled from her night's sleep. She stretched, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness about the day ahead. Today was the beginning of something new, a chance to immerse herself in learning and make new friends.

With a determined smile, she dashed into the bathroom. After her bath, she quickly got dressed in casual clothes: a bright yellow T-shirt and a pair of blue jeans. She combed her hair into a tidy ponytail, feeling proud of her appearance. She grabbed her backpack and went to find her mama.

Mara was already done making breakfast when Lily came down. The living room, though small, was cozy and inviting. A worn but comfortable couch sat against one wall, with a small coffee table in front of it. The dining area, adjacent to the living room, had a modest wooden table with four chairs. A few framed photos of family and friends adorned the walls, adding a personal touch to the space.

"Good morning, Mama," Lily greeted, her eyes bright with excitement.

"Good morning, sweetheart," Mara replied with a warm smile. "I made your favorite, pancakes."

After breakfast, the duo set out to Kingston High. On reaching the school premises, Mara and Lily were directed to the principal's office.

In the principal's office, they were greeted by Mrs. Gibbons, a kindly woman with graying hair and a gentle demeanor.

"Good morning, Mrs. Anthony. And you must be Lily," she said, smiling warmly. "Please, have a seat."

"Thank you, Mrs. Gibbons," Mara replied, sitting down with Lily beside her.

"Lily, I have a few questions for you," Mrs. Gibbons began. "What are your favorite subjects in school?"

Lily thought for a moment before answering, "I really like reading and math."

"Good, good," Mrs. Gibbons nodded. "And what do you enjoy doing in your free time?"

"I love writing stories and drawing," Lily said confidently.

Mrs. Gibbons smiled. "That's wonderful, Lily. We encourage creativity here at Kingston High."

When the time came to make the payment, Mara opened her purse and her face fell. She didn't have enough on her.

Seeing the letdown on Lily's face, Mrs. Gibbons quickly offered a suggestion. "We have a scholarship exam coming up. If Lily is willing, she can take the test. If she passes, her tuition will be covered."

Lily's eyes lit up. "I'd love to take the exam!"

Mrs. Gibbons smiled warmly. "Excellent. The exam is scheduled for next Tuesday. Just come back then, and we'll take it from there."

Mara breathed a sigh of relief, grateful for the opportunity. "Thank you so much, Mrs. Gibbons. We really appreciate this."

"It's my pleasure. I'm looking forward to seeing you again, Lily," Mrs. Gibbons said as they left the office.
