Chapter 42 - Back To The Guild

Locus and Genken both left the apartment. On their way down to exit the building, they ran into a handful of people.

"Aren't they like witnesses? Why didn't we teleport outside?"

Genken smiled.

"Because that would have been no fun, don't you think?"

"So you think jail is more fun?"

"Relax. Don't forget that getting caught is our goal."

Genken was right. They should have as many witnesses as possible.

They exited the building and just ignored the fact that a dead man was lying around the corner. On their way back to the guild, the two of them took their time.

"If we wait long enough, we don't need to carry the corpse back as proof of our accomplished mission."

Time was passing, and it got late. The sun's tone turned orange as it disappeared behind the skyline of the buildings around the restaurant where Locus and Genken sat and ate. Even though the temperature outside was nearly perfect, they were sitting inside. Locus asked Genken why he wanted it to be like that.

"There might be bugs outside."

"We've just killed a man, and you are worried about bugs?"

"The man wasn't trying to eat my food."

"Right, he wanted to kill you."

"Maybe the bugs want that too?"

When they finished enjoying their dinner, the last rays of sunlight had just disappeared, and only the red sky remained.

"I think we've waited long enough."

Genken paid for the meal and signaled Locus that it was time to go to the guild. However, instead of walking down the street in the guild's direction, Genken went over to the other side of the street and talked to a man in a kiosk. Locus watched them from just outside the restaurant.

After a few seconds, Genken came back with some papers in his hand. He held them up in the air as he crossed the street.

"I've got the newspaper. Looks like there is breaking news."

"So that's why you chose this restaurant?"

"Would you have preferred to walk an extra half a mile?"

"I didn't say that I had a problem with the restaurant."

"You better. That lasagna was delicious."

Genken browsed through the newspaper.

"De-li-cious! I'm telling you."

He carefully read a certain article.

"There it is!"

Genken took a single sheet of paper out of the newspaper and teleported the rest away. Locus knew that Genken had a place where he teleported stuff he'd probably need later and a place for trash. It could have gone to either one of them. Locus looked at the headline.

'Mastermind Lieutenant found murdered under his apartment's window.'

"How do they know he didn't kill himself?"

"I'm assuming it's because of the broken window."

"Maybe it was an accident?"

Genken chuckled and looked at Locus.

"You mean a Lieutenant of the Mastermind Guild who was strong enough to take on the two of us just tripped and fell?"

Locus threw his arms up in the air.

"Stuff happens. You never know."

Genken touched his shoulder and teleported both of them inside the guild. They walked to the counter labeled 'Fulfilled Offensive Quests'.

There were multiple lines that each led to a different staff member. While some of the staff were talking to adventurers, some others were free. Genken chose a man whose age Locus guessed was about 65 years.

"Hello, we'd like to officially complete a quest."

"Can I have your adventurer cards?"

"Of course."

"Thank you. One second, please."

The man looked inside a book.

"Ah, yes. The quest regarding Lieutenant Golmer."

"Yes. After completing the quest, we read in the newspaper that the Lieutenant had died, so questioning him about anything won't be possible."

"That's alright. I trust that you have fulfilled the employer's wish."

The man behind the counter handed Locus and Genken their licenses, and they left the guild.

"Does the guild have no problem with us killing a man? Isn't that still against the law?"

"Who said we killed him?"

"I see..."

"On that note: The Mastermind Guild might pay us a visit tomorrow. Since a Lieutenant was killed, they'll probably investigate."

"What will we do?"

Genken teleported them into their living room.

"Your choice."
