Chapter 13 - Four Students Remain

"Noah's the name," the white-haired boy with magnificent blue eyes spoke, "And my talent is [Energy Balls]."

"[Golden Beast]"

"[Devour]"

Everyone introduced one another, and although everyone had unique talents, they weren't as interesting as those three.

Somehow, powerful talents were those that you knew were good simply by stating their names.

[Devour] does sound much more powerful than [Blue Warrior] or [Light Wielder], doesn't it?

In the end, 9 of them remained as they stood in front of the red door of the principal office.

"I guess we can assume that the door is the final boss," Leon remarked as he eyed the ominous aura that was coming out from it.

Noah nodded, his blue eyes gleaming with determination, "We should be ready. Let's open it and see what's behind there."

"Okay…" Dan looked nervous, "But who's going first?"

It was clearly between Dan, Leon and Noah since all the others stood at the back, their talents not as powerful as the three boys.

"Sigh…" With a deep breath, Leon stepped forward and placed his hand on the golden handle of the door, "Doesn't matter, just follow me closely."

[Oh? Feeling confident, Host?]

"Well, if Dan loses his fox, it would be bad for him, and Noah's balls need to have his target on sight before being able to be used, I'm the only one with the physical capabilities to do that…" his [Devour] talent and completion of [Quests] allowed him to have the best stats out of everyone, so it made sense.

Now… Leon just needed to make sure to not get one shotted.

Grabbing the two handles, he pushed the door open using his strength, it was pretty sturdy, but he managed.

~CLANG~

Without wasting a single second, he entered the room.

The door creaked as it opened, revealing a dimly lit room filled with bookshelves and old furniture. The scent of dust and parchment hung in the air.

And at the end of the room, looking directly at Leon from its position, was the "Principal".

[The Principal - Level 10]

[1000/1000 HP]

It was a three meters tall humanoid figure with a book covering its face, and wearing a classical suit with a necktie on it.

It was carrying a golden book in its right hand, its head diverting from Leon to look at it once in a while, even though it logically couldn't since, y'know, it had a book on its face.

"…"

But right as he noticed it…

~DING~

[You have received a QUEST!]

[Quest: "Final Blow"]

[Objective: Be the one to give out the final blow so that you can devour the principal!]

[Reward: 30 Stat Points]

In comparison to most of the others, who could gain experience even by just participating in the defeat of the principal, Leon precisely NEEDED to be the one giving the final blow.

[Otherwise I can't absorb the soul, since you aren't the one who finished it!]

It was such a drawback for him.

But surprisingly…

~DING, DING, DING~

He turned around and saw that EVERYONE were looking at their panels.

'They all received the same quest, didn't they?'

[Precisely, sure you can get experience by participating in the kill, but the person that deals the final blow, even if they only dealt that specific attack, will gain the most out of everyone!]

Almost felt like some lame mechanic to force people to push each other in the hopes of getting the final kill.

"Oh well, we'll just have to see…" Leon didn't think Dan would do that, but Noah and the others were another problem, since he didn't know them much.

In opposition to what most people believed, Noah's family was also rich, although not on Akira's level.

"Well, let's go," Dan closed his panel and entered the boss room as well.

And soon enough, all 7 others followed, noticing that boss figure at the end, staring at them even though they couldn't see its eyes beyond that book on its face.

Having 1000 HP, the boss would be pretty tough to defeat as even Leon dealt a maximum of 70-100 damage per hit currently.

~CREAK, BAM~

The red door closed behind them in a thud, trapping them.

Now it was either they survive this encounter or die trying.

"Devour!" Leon activated his power, and his aura began to appear around him.

"…" Dan on the other hand was crouching down next to Foxxy, still petting it, ready to attack whenever since Dan's skill actually worked much better in groups when enemies couldn't focus on the golden fox and kill it.

"Energy Balls," Noah mumbled, and three blue energy balls instantly appeared around him, radiating with an electric power as lightning bolts could be seen flashing inside of them.

All the others on the other hand summoned their own powers.

But right as that happened… the principal decided to act as well.

~FWISH~

The golden book in its right hand began to glow, and everyone got ready for impact.

But before they could even realize it, it turned the book in their direction and…

~BIM, BIM, BIM~

Nine bolts of light rushed in the direction of each student from the pages of the book.

"…"

"SHIT!"

Foxxy pushed Dan out of the way, Noah just crouched, and Leon moved to the side quite easily as his speed and perception really helped.

This was the first attack, and yet it targeted everyone, probably aiming to reduce the amount of enemies it had to fight.

"Are you all okay-" Noah asked as he turned toward several people but… his eyes widened.

The bolts of light had actually hit five people that were incapable of avoiding since they didn't assign their stats well.

"Holy shit…" Leon stared in disbelief as the five students fell, unresponsive.

They were all dead, just like that, not a single scream leaving their mouths as it killed them almost instantly, leaving a trail of smoke coming out of their corpses as the light attack literally fried them from the inside.

The only other person remaining with a black-haired girl with a bow in her hands, she was a [Star Archer], and she was the only other one out of the group to actually have a powerful sounding talent.

The reason she survived was because as an archer, she completely prioritized increasing her [Speed] and [Perception], meaning she was able to see the attack coming from a mile away.

[9 -> 4 students alive]

"Did that Toji guy lie or something?" Dan wondered, "There is no chance in hell only this much people survived yet apparently the survival rate is 10%."

"Well, I think it's because Akira basically killed two thirds of the people by closing the door at the start, so no wonder probably many people with powerful talents died there simply because they didn't awaken them…" Leon shrugged, and it was the truth.

[Well, I would focus on that thing if I was you, Host!] EGO, who was still on Leon's head, spoke.

~TAP, TAP~

They could see that the principal was now approaching them, the book in its hand still glowing.

"Well, huh," Dan scratched the back of his head, "Get ready, Foxxy!"

'Come on, EGO,' Leon mumbled as he took a step toward the principal.

[Just make sure to deal the final blow so that we can devour him, Host!]
