Chapter 43 - Case

The doorbell rang as Reeva entered the room. Inside Holen could be seen reading a book, the title eluded him since he was far away but after approaching him it became clear that's it some kind of a detective series called Murder on the Harbor. Holen looks up to see who's here and smiles. He gestures Reeva to on the sofa.

"Thought you would never show up! Come, dear customer, The best detective has prepared what you asked for"

Holem said enthusiastically, he put down his book and got up. His hand reached to the shelf and retrieved a folder that had some paper in it. He then places the file on the table.

"Want some tea? Don't worry I won't charge you"

"What do you have?"

Reeva hasn't drunk one in a while.

"Some good from the north, you're gonna like it"

Holen got up and retrieved a pot of tea that he'd been brewing. Then he pours it into a cup. A smile crept up on his face when pouring tea into the teacup. At that moment Reeva could see a very faint yellow mist seeping from Holen's black shirt.

"Here you go! From the Gulangua, you're not gonna find any better than this. It's a true tea for gentle men like us."

Holen settles the tea in front of Reeva. Then He takes a sip of tea for himself. Reeva follows by smelling the aroma of the tea, then takes a little sip of the hot tea. It has a bit of bitter taste to it but overall the aroma is quite nice.

Holen knows his stuff.

"OK, what have you got for me?"

Reeva opened the files and saw that the first paper was about a noble family.

"You told me to look into some slave purchasing right? So, I got a hand on their records. There I got a suspicious track of one noble family that had been purchasing Slave in bulk. I'm pretty sure this is what you're looking for. Right, Reeva?"

Reeva stops his hand for a split second but resumes once he has an idea of Holen's intention. He wouldn't be talking to a wanted heretic if he didn't want to. He underestimated this guy.

"Quite rude of you to look into your customer information."

"Your request is rather weird so, This best detective has to look into a lot of things. To not get myself in hot water later. Being the best detective is a hard job."

"How did you find out?"

"It's a Trade secret" Holen smiles "But... as my dear customer I'll give you a hint, I got some local sources."

Reeva thinks back to when he was going out of the two and purchased ID to escape out of Lmemore. That is likely the place that Holen could get his information from.

"What do you think? I'm I a trouble?"

"No problem! this best detective has deemed that working with you is not a risk. As long as you don't go around killing people. The best detective will protect customer privacy."

"As long as you got paid right?"

"hahaha," Holem let out a dry laugh "The best detective will always serve his customer!"

Reeva looks at Holen with squinted eyes.

"Then If someone was asking for me or my sister's information, please decline them. I'll match their price."

"Oh? Please be at ease the church is too petty to trust this best detective. They are too blinded by their god to see my excellence"

Reeva couldn't help but place his hand on his head.

"Just do what I said, OK?"

"I never say no to gentleman money," Holen said with confidence "But I did have a favor to ask, If you don't mind? A trade if you will. And I won't sell your info if you do this for me!"

"What is it?"

Holen's smile grew wider.

"Glad you're open to your idea! There is a black market auction that will happen in 2 days in the central district. I will send you the exact details later but This best detective needs you to purchase something for me."

Holen cheerfully talks after seeing Reeva who looks likely to accept such a deal.

"Why did you need me for this?"

"Do you believe in the supernatural?"

Reeva froze and looked up.

"You could say that."

"This best detective has been on the case for many years and never came close to solving it. However, in my pursuit of a killer, there is someone who doesn't like it, and that someone might have a ghost as their partner. They always catch me when I snooping around. So I need a young gentleman to help me get an item. It's the murder weapon of a case called Blood Snow that happened years ago. However, the killer was never caught. This is the only lead I have and I need to get it. I'll provide the money. I just need you to get in there and buy it."

"Ghost?" Reeva ask, dumbfounded.

"Yes, ghost"

Holen makes a weird reaction. It's hard to read his intention from Reeva's perspective. The story checks out if there's a mystic involved. But normal people aren't supposed to know that.

"Let's say there are ghosts, aren't they gonna hurt me when I get a hold of the item?" Reeva put a little skepticism in his voice.

"Trust this best detective, from my experience, they only hunt me, but if you feel that it's unsafe take this." He reached into his pocket grabbed a wooden totem and placed it on the table "I purchased from a shaman three days ago, said to ward off ghosts."

"...." Reeva looked at the item dumbfounded, it had no mystic property whatsoever. It's just a normal totem. "Why don't you got here yourself with such a divine item?"

"It's just a precaution, I doubt this thing could hold for long so it will be safer if you go."

"....." Reeva couldn't decide with logic, on the one hand, it sounded so suspicious to go and on the other, it was just a free trade for information protection from Everyone else that might want him.

"I could do it, but I also need a favor from you"

Ultimately he decides to do it. It'll make for a good story. And he could use this to bargain for something else since Holen seem to value this operation highly. Besides he still has to wait a bit for the investigation, finding a hiding eldrich moster in the making is not that easy.
