Chapter 8 - A Wedding Amidst Responsibilities

♡♡♡♡♡

The day following the brief but somehow fruitful meeting with her uncle, Wu Meifen found herself attending a modest but vibrant wedding celebration in the village.

The bridegroom, Zhang Mingyu's younger brother-in-law, Zhao Zhijie, was a local carpenter, and the wedding was held in his family's courtyard. The space was adorned with colorful lanterns and red banners symbolizing good fortune and happiness. An ornate altar was set up, covered with offerings of fruits, cakes, and incense to honor the ancestors and bless the union.

Wu Meifen, though only twenty years old, bore a maturity that belied her age. Her responsibilities as a young mother and the owner of Dragon's Edge Woodcutters had honed her into a capable and determined woman.

She possessed a delicate beauty, her youthful appearance enhanced by a cute tiny mole on the left side of the bridge of her nose. Her eyes were dark and expressive, reflecting both the burdens she carried and the resilience she had developed. She wore her long, silky black hair in an elegant bun, secured with a simple yet exquisite jade hairpin.

For the occasion, Wu Meifen had chosen an attire that mirrored her personality: simple but elegant. She wore a flowing hanfu in shades of deep red and gold, the fabric adorned with subtle embroidery that caught the light with every movement. The gown's simplicity was offset by its refined craftsmanship, giving her the appearance of a young noble lady. The color palette harmonized beautifully with her son's outfit, creating a cohesive and charming picture as she carried little Yu-er in her arms.

Seven months old, Baby Yu, dressed in a red silk jacket with intricate gold embroidery and a matching cap adorned with a golden tassel, was the perfect complement to his mother's attire. His cheeks were rosy, and his curious eyes took in the lively surroundings with innocent wonder.

As the ceremony commenced, the bride and groom performed traditional rituals. They first bowed to the heavens and the earth, then to their parents, and finally to each other, signifying their commitment and respect. A red silk ribbon linked their hands as they walked around the courtyard, symbolizing their bond and the start of their life together. Guests watched with smiles and tears, appreciating the deep cultural heritage in every gesture.

After the formalities, a feast was laid out for the guests. Tables were laden with an array of dishes, from savory dumplings to sweet pastries, each dish carefully prepared to signify prosperity and joy.

The bride, having completed the ceremonial rituals, retreated to the bridal chamber to await her husband. Meanwhile, the groom moved among the guests, greeting them and expressing his gratitude.

As she approached the groom, Wu Meifen was greeted by her cousin, Zhang Mingyu, who smiled warmly at the sight of her. "Cousin, you honor us with your presence. And look at Xiao Yu, he is the very image of his father," Zhang Mingyu said, gently pinching the baby's cheek.

"Thank you, Cousin," Wu Meifen replied, eyes slightly flickering at the mention of her late husband. "Congratulations to your brother-in-law. May their union be blessed with happiness and prosperity."

She then inquired about Zhang Mingyu's three-year-old twin sons. "How are the boys?" she asked, her eyes scanning for the little ones amidst the wedding guests.

"They're resting now," Zhang Mingyu replied with a fond smile. "After enjoying the sweets during the banquet, they've grown quite sleepy. They're off to dreamland, no doubt."

The groom, beaming with joy, approached them. "Mistress Wu, your presence brings us great joy. Thank you for coming," he said, his eyes shining with a mix of liquor and happiness.

Wu Meifen returned the smile, nodding in acknowledgment. "This wedding is beautiful. May you both find great happiness together." She then presented him with a small, ornately carved box. Inside was a rare imperial jade token (Huángyù Bǎo), a symbol of great honor and respect, used specifically for gifts and significant occasions like weddings.

The groom's eyes widened as he carefully lifted the jade token from the box. The exquisite carvings and intricate details were immediately evident, reflecting the token's high value. He was visibly moved by the unexpected and precious gift.

"This is truly an honor," the groom said, his voice filled with awe. "Such a valuable gift will not only be cherished but will become a treasured heirloom for my new family. It's a symbol of your kindness and respect, and we will hold it in high regard."

Wu Meifen smiled warmly. "I'm glad you appreciate it. Since I cannot partake in wine, let us toast with tea."

The groom gratefully accepted the jade token and the cup of tea. "To a future filled with joy and prosperity," he said, raising his cup.

"To joy and prosperity," Wu Meifen and Zhang Mingyu echoed, clinking their cups gently against his before taking a sip. The jade token, with its exceptional craftsmanship and cultural significance, was a testament to the honor and respect Wu Meifen wished to convey on this special occasion, marking the start of a new legacy for the groom's family.

As Wu Meifen moved through the crowd, she encountered several familiar faces. Some were patrons of Dragon's Edge business, who greeted her with respect. "Mistress Wu, it is good to see you. Your father's legacy continues strong under your management," one of the older patrons remarked.

"Thank you, Uncle Li. I strive to honor my father's memory and provide for my son," she responded graciously.

An elderly woman, one of the neighborhood aunties, approached with a concerned look. "Young Meifen, my dear, how have you been managing since your husband passed? It must be so difficult for you."

Wu Meifen nodded, her expression somber but resolute. "It has been challenging, Auntie, but I am determined to persevere for the sake of my son and the family business."

Several other guests couldn't help but coo over Ling Yu, who was indeed a charming sight in his traditional attire. "What a handsome little boy! Just look at him," one woman exclaimed, eliciting a gurgling laugh from the baby.

As the evening approached and the festivities continued, Wu Meifen noticed some of her employees from the company in one corner of the courtyard, having drinks served by Zhao Tao, Zhang Mingyu's husband. They gathered around, discussing the sudden extensive order from the magistrate and the upcoming visit of court officials from the capital. Uncle Wu was also present, conversing animatedly with Mr. Liu, the senior butler from the Magistrate's household, before both approached her.

"Ah, Mistress Wu, how adorable your son is," Mr. Liu cooed, gently tickling the baby's chin. Ling Yu giggled, his eyes sparkling with delight.

"Thank you, Mr. Liu," Wu Meifen said, smiling at his affection for her son.

Wu Chen nodded and turned to Wu Meifen. "We were just discussing the recent order from the Magistrate. It seems he has decided to renovate a section of his estate in anticipation of the officials' visit."

"Indeed," Mr. Liu added. "The magistrate's order is quite specific. He wants high-quality timber for the renovation, and the timeline is tight. He personally chose Lóng Biān Fámù Zhě (Dragon's Edge Woodcutters) as the main supplier."

Wu Meifen furrowed her brow, considering the implications. "The timing is indeed challenging. We must mobilize quickly or we might get caught in the middle of the terrestrial rains."

"Agreed." Both gentlemen raised their wine cups in unison.

"Moreover," Mr. Liu continued, "the visit from the officials is quite suspicious. It is unusual for them to make the journey from the capital without stating a clear purpose," he remarked, shaking his head while recounting their side of the situation. "Our Magistrate was left baffled and the entire household descended into a state of chaotic panic."

Wu Chen nodded in agreement. "On our part, we must be prepared for anything. The quality of our work will be scrutinized, and we cannot afford any mistakes."

After speaking with Mr. Liu, Wu Meifen and Wu Chen approached the group of Dragon's Edge employees, including Zhao Tao and his father, Zhao Baiyi, a senior woodcutting master. The father and son duo, both dressed in traditional formal attire befitting the occasion, greeted their employer with deep bows while clasping their hands.

"Mistress Wu," Zhao Baiyi said respectfully, "it is an honor to see you here. Yu-er is growing fast."

"Thank you, Master Zhao," Wu Meifen replied warmly. "Congratulations on your youngest son's marriage."

Zhao Tao nodded, smiling at the sight of Wu Meifen and her son. "Mistress Wu, we were just discussing the new order from the magistrate. The timeline seems quite tight and difficult."

"Yes, it is indeed urgent," she acknowledged. "We could gather the day after tomorrow at the store for an emergency meeting to discuss our plan of action. We need to mobilize quickly and efficiently."

The workers all agreed, understanding the gravity of the situation. Zhao Baiyi, ever the master of his craft, added, "'Every cut tells a story.' We must approach this challenge with the same dedication and skill we put into our work."

""Indeed," Wu Meifen agreed, "but for now, let us enjoy the occasion. We will reconvene and plan thoroughly when the time comes."

The group expressed their gratitude for the brief respite and promised to be prepared for the upcoming tasks.

As the night deepened, Wu Meifen decided it was time to take her leave. She did not wish to keep Little Yu-er out too late, and her responsibilities at Dragon's Edge Woodcutters awaited her. She sought out the groom once more to bid him farewell.

"Your wedding is a delightful celebration. I must take my leave now, as it is getting late for Yu-er," Wu Meifen said, inclining her head.

"Thank you, Mistress Wu, for gracing us with your presence. Safe travels home," the groom replied, raising his fists in gratitude.

Zhang Mingyu walked with Wu Meifen to the entrance, carrying a small lantern to light their way. "Take care, Cousin. I'll see you at the shop overmorrow," she said earnestly.

"Thank you, Ah-Ming. I shall see you then."

With Xiao Ling Yu-er nestled comfortably against her, Wu Meifen made her way back home under the evening sky, the soft glow of the lantern guiding their steps. The night was peaceful, and despite the weight of her responsibilities, she felt a moment of contentment as she held her son close.
