Chapter 3 - 3. Unexpected.

Wyetta was away from home, obtaining some ingredients that were missing from home. She needed to make Hunter's favourite soup which was now Thalia's too.

As she was enthusiastically conversing with the middle-aged spice vendor, Mr Lakas Beggfield, she suddenly heard screams and agonizing cries, people running helter-skelter.

"What's going on?" with brows furrowed, she came out of the shop only to find dreaded members of another well-known clan ruthlessly punching and liquidating people here and there. She wanted to scream out in horror but quickly decided against it.

'Gosh, why is this happening?' she thought while covering her mouth; her eyes betrayed her shock and fear. Her heart was furiously pounding against her chest, threatening to leap out from its lodging.

"Go inside, my dear. You don't have the powers to fight. I do, and it's my job to protect," the middle-aged man said, pushing Wyetta gently into his shop. "Behind that shelf over there, there's a trap door leading to my basement. Hide there for now," he ordered, closing the transparent door of his shop.

Next, speaking some inaudible incantations, a black-coloured wooden staff with a spiral tip appeared in his hand and with a battle cry, he ran out.

"Die, you sons of a gun," as he neared where some demons were, he jumped high and pointed his staff at them. Immediately, light came out of the staff and blasted the demons but even after falling miserably to the ground, they got back up as if nothing happened.

Five or so demons rushed towards the man who was already hovering in the air with his staff no longer in his hands. It was in front of him also hovering and glowing while he pressed both palms together, muttering inaudible incantations.

As the demons jumped high, wanting to tear the man to bits, the staff glowed with a golden light and split into three, all of which were glowing.

"You weak wizard, go to hell," one of the demons yelled as he threw a punch in the man's way, unfortunately, the three staffs launched ice attacks at him and his fellows who were slightly behind him, freezing them in mid-air.

With no control over their bodies, they fell to the ground.

Seconds later, the ice was already cracking, however, a chubby lady with a glowing blue sword charged at them, quickly beheading them before the ice could even break off.

However, more demon men came her way, yelling battle cries. "Hmph, I'll send you to your fucking ancestors," she yelled, charging towards them with the teeth necklace on her neck glowing brightly.

As she got closest to one of the demons, she jumped high and slashed ruthlessly at him. But shockingly the sword didn't penetrate the skin of that demon.

Though flabbergasted, she quickly fell back and Mr Lakas launched an ice stream at those set of demon men. It froze them but before the woman could even attempt to charge at them, the demons were already free of the ice.

"Ha! Such a basic spell, did you think it could stop us like those wimps you killed earlier? We're the real deal." one of the demon men laughed.

At that, the woman took off her black pearl necklace and wrapped it at the handle of the sword. It immediately glowed brighter than before, radiating a red light until it got absorbed into the handle.

Then the plain-looking blue sword started having streaks of glowing yellow and the witch warrior female's body was also glowing golden colour.

"Kill!" the woman yelled, charging at the demon men in a rage while the demons did the same as her.

As she swung her sword horizontally- fast and forcefully- a golden light emanated from the sword and entered the demon men's bodies.

They immediately felt their body become heavy and hard to control. Their dark red eyes were turning pink.

"What did you do?" a panicked demon asked her but the woman simply left them to face other demons and help out her clansmen as much as she could.

Mr Lakas' three staffs launched a golden light at the weakened five demons that the woman had left to his care.

In seconds, the bodies of the demons got frozen. As Lakas flew away, a golden-haired witch warrior with a petite frame and a long thin sword rushed over and cut off the heads of the demon men who couldn't resist.

The sight of the five heads rolling away excited her and she let out a battle cry as she saw some more demons. Two more men slightly taller than her charged at the enemy alongside her, "If we die, we take as many of your heads with us," the woman yelled, her eyes glowing orange.

As they got closer to the enemy, all three jumped into the crowd of demons who had just gotten out of a portal that opened seconds ago.

In no time though, their heads got detached from their bodies, rolling off on the ground without even slaying one of the enemies.

Meanwhile, inside the shop, behind the shelf at the extreme, Wyetta was more than worried. She paced about with the trapdoor in sight. She couldn't bring herself to hide in his basement because she didn't know the status of her family.

"Hunter, Thalia, Loyce... are they alright?" she muttered in fear. Even from where she was, she could hear the sounds of the brutal fights outside. Sounds of battle cries from both the witch clansmen and the demons, the effects of the witch spellcasters' staff's magic launches, the cries of being injured, the clashing of swords!

Despite this, she wanted to find a way to get home, to see her family again. She had come close to death many times before due to her love of thrill-seeking. She only became a little more docile after birthing Thalia. She couldn't just hide while others were out there, fighting with everything they'd got.

She looked around the shop, finding a club.

"I can use this to at least make my way home, even if I can't fight!" she internally hyped herself as she tested out the club.

Cautiously, Wyetta slowly made her way to the entrance of the shop and opened the door.

Upon coming out, three demon beasts' heads rolled and stopped at her feet. The stench of their blood and the horrible sight before her made her nearly puke but she had to forge ahead.

She could see many clanspeople- those using swords and those using staffs and a few who used their fists(either bare-handed or with gauntlets)- fighting with all they'd got, their clothes stained with the blood of their enemies.

The demons they were fighting were of different types. Some looked human but were bigger and more muscular than normal humans and their eyes and hair colour were rare types, most of them had tanned skin and glaring red tattoos on their bare upper bodies that glowed as they fought against the witch clan. All were bare-footed and believed in using their fists and long black claws. A few of them had pointy ears and sharp teeth which helped to add to their frightening aura.

Another type was the thespianthropes. They could morph into their beast form and return to human form however they wished. Only loincloths made of a special material were around their waists. The female therianthropes didn't morph often like their male allies, rather they held giant weapons that 3 humans couldn't even carry and used them to aid them in battle.

The last type were demon beasts, three of which had welcomed Wyetta by stopping close to her feet earlier.

"This..." Wyetta couldn't go back into the store as another portal had surprisingly opened inside there and a swarm of demon locusts had flown out.

A bite from them could kill a powerless person like her in seconds.

So she felt a surge of adrenaline, rushing eastwards, heading in the direction of her home.

A demon man, twice her height and size blocked her way. The club she held was like a toy compared to the swords being held by the witch warriors.

Looking to her left, she saw two fallen witch warriors and ran in their direction with the demon strolling after her, as if her death was more than certain. She grabbed both swords and turned to face the demon who was just shy of her spot.

"Get back, or I'll really kill you," she said through clenched teeth. She couldn't look weak before this bastard. Even though the reality was that she was more than prey to him.

She decided to fall back until she tripped over a newly fallen witch spellcaster's mangled body. She recognized the clothing. 'It's Mr Karlson...' she exclaimed in her mind.

'At least he fought hard, but I can't even fight. I can't even protect myself. I...'

"Get away from my customer, you piece of shit," she heard a familiar voice.

She turned to see it was Mr Lakas, flying over in their direction.

The demon's attention was no longer on her but the flying 'prey' rushing towards him to become food.

"Run, Wyetta," he yelled while launching spells from his three magic staffs.

The demon was soon defeated but it came at a great cost- Mr Lakas' right hand was no more. He quickly took out a pain-numbing pill from his pocket and swallowed it. Then muttering some incantations, the bleeding soon stopped.

Wyetta, mid-sprint, turned her head for a few seconds, wanting to know how the battle situation between her saviour and the enemy was going but she saw he was now missing a hand. But that demon male was no more with life.

'This... This is all my fault!' she thought in self-blame, her look becoming downcast.

She almost stopped but he locked gazes with her and with a stern look, mouthed, "Keep running!" to her.

Expressing her thanks with a tear rolling down her left cheek, she continued running.

Now, that she was armed with two swords, even though she wasn't adept at using them, she was able to use her agility and small frame to get past very tall demons and even avoid some attacks.
