Mortis Nacht moved silently through the dense forest, his senses heightened and alert. The air was thick with the smell of damp earth and decaying leaves, and the trees formed a canopy that blocked out most of the sunlight. Shadows danced around him, but Mortis embraced the darkness, using it to his advantage. His focus was unbreakable, his mind a whirlwind of calculations and contingencies.
He knew that the runaway, a rank 2 apprentice, was somewhere nearby. The faint tracks had led them to this secluded clearing, and Mortis could hear the faint rustle of leaves and the distant snap of a twig. His team, consisting of Rael, Thalor, and Lira, was spread out around him, each taking their designated positions. Mortis trusted them to a certain extent, but he knew better than to rely entirely on others. His own strength and cunning were his greatest assets.
"Rael, Lira, take the left flank," Mortis whispered, his voice barely audible. "Thalor, circle around to the right with me. We'll close in from both sides and catch him by surprise."
Rael and Lira nodded, their expressions determined. They moved silently into position, their movements smooth and practiced. Mortis signaled Thalor to follow him, and together they crept through the underbrush, their steps light and deliberate.
As Mortis moved, he analyzed his surroundings with meticulous detail. The forest was dense, the trees towering and ancient. Moss-covered rocks and fallen branches littered the ground, creating a natural maze. He noted potential escape routes, areas that could be used for ambushes, and spots where traps might be hidden. His mind worked tirelessly, considering every possibility and preparing for any eventuality.
They reached their designated spot, and Mortis signaled for Thalor to stop. He could hear the faint sounds of movement nearby, the runaway apprentice trying to stay hidden. Mortis's eyes narrowed, his senses honing in on the source of the noise.
"He's close," Thalor whispered, his voice barely a breath.
Mortis nodded. "Be ready for anything."
They waited in tense silence, the forest around them eerily quiet. Suddenly, a flicker of movement caught Mortis's eye. He turned just in time to see a figure dart from behind a tree, heading deeper into the forest.
"There!" Mortis hissed, pointing.
Rael and Lira sprang into action, their spells at the ready. Rael conjured a Fireball, the incandescent sphere of flames crackling in his hand. He hurled it at the fleeing figure, but the apprentice was quick, dodging the fiery projectile with a swift roll.
Lira followed up with a potion, hurling it with precision. The vial shattered against a tree, releasing a cloud of noxious gas. The runaway coughed and stumbled, momentarily disoriented, but quickly recovered and kept running.
Mortis and Thalor moved to cut him off, their pace relentless. Mortis cast Shadow Tendril, summoning dark, writhing tendrils from the ground. The tendrils snaked towards the apprentice, aiming to entangle and immobilize him. But the apprentice was prepared. He countered with a spell of his own, casting a wave of fire that incinerated the tendrils before they could reach him.
"He's not going down easily," Thalor muttered, his eyes narrowing.
Mortis nodded, his mind racing. "We need to outthink him. Stay sharp."
The runaway led them through the forest, moving with surprising agility and speed.
They reached a small clearing, and the apprentice turned to face them, his eyes blazing with defiance. He raised his hands, chanting an incantation. Mortis recognized the spell immediately—Ice Shard. A jagged, crystalline spear of ice formed in the apprentice's hand, and he launched it towards Mortis with deadly precision.
Mortis reacted swiftly, summoning an Umbral Shield. The dark, shimmering barrier materialized just in time, absorbing the impact of the ice shard. The force of the spell pushed Mortis back a step, but he held his ground.
"Impressive," Mortis said, his voice cold and unyielding. "But you'll need more than that to stop us."
The apprentice snarled, his eyes flashing with anger. He cast another spell, this time a Lightning Bolt. The brilliant arc of electric energy shot forth, crackling with lethal precision. Mortis dodged to the side, the bolt missing him by inches and striking a tree, which exploded in a shower of splinters.
Thalor took advantage of the distraction, casting a spell of his own. Shadow Dart, a fast-moving projectile of dark energy, streaked towards the apprentice. The apprentice countered with a barrier spell, the dark energy dissipating harmlessly against the shield.
"He's skilled," Thalor said, frustration evident in his voice.
"Yes, but he's not invincible," Mortis replied, his mind working furiously. He knew that brute force alone wouldn't be enough. He needed to outmaneuver the apprentice, to exploit any weakness.
Mortis scanned the clearing, his eyes catching sight of a small, partially concealed pit. A trap, no doubt set by the apprentice. He smiled grimly, an idea forming in his mind.
"Rael, Lira, push him towards the pit," Mortis commanded. "Thalor and I will flank him."
Rael and Lira moved in, their spells ready. Rael unleashed another Fireball, forcing the apprentice to dodge to the side. Lira threw another potion, this one releasing a burst of blinding light. The apprentice shielded his eyes, momentarily disoriented.
Mortis and Thalor moved in from the sides, closing the distance. The apprentice recovered quickly, casting a spell that sent a wave of fire towards them. Mortis countered with an Umbral Shield, absorbing the flames, while Thalor dodged to the side, launching another Shadow Dart.
The dart struck the apprentice's shoulder, causing him to stumble. He was now dangerously close to the pit. Mortis saw his chance and acted. He cast Inferno Spark, a concentrated burst of fire that ignited the ground at the apprentice's feet. The flames forced the apprentice to step back, directly towards the pit.
With a final push, Mortis cast Shadow Tendril once more. The dark tendrils emerged from the ground, wrapping around the apprentice's legs and pulling him towards the pit. The apprentice struggled, casting spell after spell to free himself, but it was too late. He fell into the pit with a cry of rage and frustration.
Mortis approached the edge of the pit, looking down at the trapped apprentice. "You fought well," he said, his voice devoid of emotion. "But this is the end for you."
The apprentice glared up at him, his eyes burning with defiance. "You'll regret this," he spat. "I'll make sure of it."
Mortis smiled coldly. "I doubt that."
He raised his hand, preparing to cast the final spell. But before he could act, the apprentice made a desperate move. He cast a powerful explosion spell, the force of which blew him out of the pit and sent Mortis and Thalor stumbling back.
The apprentice landed on his feet, but he was badly injured. His right arm hung limply at his side, blood dripping from a deep gash. Mortis realized that the apprentice had sacrificed his own arm to escape. It was desperate but effective.
"He's escaping!" Rael shouted, launching a Fireball towards the apprentice.
The apprentice dodged, but the flames caught his cloak, setting it alight. He tore the burning fabric away and ran, moving with surprising speed despite his injuries.
"After him!" Mortis commanded, his voice cold and determined.
Mortis's mind was already calculating his next move. He gestured to Rael and Lira to flank the apprentice, while he and Thalor would push from the front. As they ran, Mortis could see the blood trail left by the apprentice, a clear sign of his injury. They were getting closer.
The forest grew denser, the underbrush thicker. Mortis could see the strain on Rael and Lira's faces as they pushed through the foliage, but there was no time to slow down. The apprentice was desperate and dangerous, and they couldn't afford to let him escape.
As they neared a rocky outcrop, the apprentice turned and cast a spell, sending a barrage of ice shards towards them. Mortis raised an Umbral Shield, but the shards were numerous and powerful. One struck Rael in the leg, another grazed Lira's arm. They both gritted their teeth and kept moving, but the injuries were slowing them down.
"Thalor, take the left," Mortis ordered. "I'll cover the right. We need to corner him."
Thalor nodded, his face set in grim determination. He moved to the left, casting a series of Shadow Darts to keep the apprentice on the defensive. Mortis circled to the right, his eyes never leaving the apprentice.
The apprentice, now cornered against the rocky outcrop, cast another spell. This time, it was a wall of fire, separating him from Mortis and Thalor. The flames roared, creating an impenetrable barrier.
Mortis didn't hesitate. He summoned Shadow Tendrils, sending them through the flames to entangle the apprentice. The tendrils emerged on the other side, wrapping around the apprentice's legs and pulling him to the ground. The apprentice screamed in frustration, struggling against the dark restraints. Mortis knew he had to act quickly before the apprentice could free himself.
Mortis gestured to Thalor, who began chanting an incantation. Shadowy tendrils emerged from the ground, wrapping tighter around the apprentice's limbs. The flames from the apprentice's fire wall flickered and began to die out, the dark energy sapping their strength.
"You think this is the end?" the apprentice spat, his voice strained with pain and anger. "I will not be killed by you!"
Mortis's eyes were cold and unyielding. "You have nowhere to run. Accept it."
