Ellen sat in the passenger seat, her fingers fidgeting with the edge of her coat as Mason drove them away from their home. It was like the darkness outside was pushing against the windows, and the awkward silence in the car made her feel even more uncomfortable. Her mind kept drifting back to the chaos inside their house. Who would do something like that? Why?
Mason's hands gripped the steering wheel tightly, his jaw clenched in silence. She could tell he was tense, his eyes focused on the road ahead, but he wasn't saying much. She glanced over at him, trying to read his expression, but the poor lighting in the car made it hard to see much beyond how focused he looked.
"We can't sleep there tonight," Mason said suddenly, his voice breaking the silence.
She turned to him, her brow furrowing. "Where are we going, then?"
