Ellen's heart raced as they turned the corner and their house came into view. The gate, normally closed and secure, was a bit open. The sight gave her a weird feeling, and she noticed Mason tense up beside her in the driver's seat.
"What the hell... why is the gate open?" Mason muttered He slowed the car, eyes narrowing at the sight ahead.
Ellen stayed silent, her heart racing as she locked her gaze on the open gate. Something felt wrong—very wrong. Mason pulled into the driveway, and they both stepped out of the car. Just as they were about to approach the house, the sound of a car engine caught their attention. A police car pulled up behind them, lights flashing but siren off.
Ellen's stomach dropped. The police? Why were they here?
Before she could ask, she saw a familiar figure running toward her from the sidewalk. It was Helga, her face flushed with panic. She hurried across the yard, practically throwing herself into Ellen's arms.
