Chereads / The Rise Of Vaporeon / Chapter 19 - Leaving The Castle

Chapter 19 - Leaving The Castle

Vaporeon stood in his dimly lit chambers, the flickering candlelight casting long shadows on the ancient stone walls. His recent battles had revealed a harsh truth: he was still too weak to face true mages. The healers he had fought were formidable, but they were not warriors. They lacked the combat prowess that his true enemies would possess.

The memory of his previous life as Mortis Noctis haunted him. He remembered the immense power he once wielded, the fear he inspired, and the ultimate betrayal that led to his downfall. Vaporeon knew he had to grow stronger, and for that, he needed to leave the castle and seek out the components necessary.

With a resolute sigh, he began packing his essential belongings and magical tools. He carefully placed his ancient tomes into a sturdy leather bag. Vaporeon made his way to the alchemy lab, his presence like a dark storm brewing.

The alchemy lab was a place of study and experimentation, filled with bubbling potions and shelves lined with rare ingredients. As Vaporeon entered, the alchemists and apprentices looked up, their faces a mix of curiosity and fear.

One of the senior alchemists, a wiry man with gray hair and piercing eyes, stepped forward. "Vaporeon, what brings you here?" he asked cautiously.

"I need the rare ingredients stored here," Vaporeon replied, his voice cold and commanding. "Gather them for me."

The alchemist hesitated, glancing at his colleagues. "These ingredients are precious and not easily replaced. We cannot simply hand them over without-"

Before he could finish, Vaporeon raised his hand, summoning dark tendrils from the shadows that coiled around the alchemist, lifting him off the ground. "I will not ask again," Vaporeon said, his tone menacing. "Give me what I need, or suffer the consequences."

The alchemists scrambled to obey, gathering vials of rare ingredients and placing them on a table. Vaporeon released the senior alchemist, who fell to the floor, gasping for breath. "You could have simply asked…" the alchemist muttered, his voice filled with bitterness.

Vaporeon ignored him, sweeping the vials into his bag. As he packed, he felt a mix of excitement and anxiety. The dangers that lay ahead were unknown, but the promise of power drove him forward.

Vaporeon slung the bag over his shoulder and stepped out into the darkened corridors of the castle. The shadows seemed to come alive around him, whispering secrets and guiding his path. He followed their whispers, leaving the safety of the castle behind.

The streets outside were dimly lit, the occasional flicker of a lantern casting eerie glows on the cobblestone pathways. Vaporeon moved stealthily, his enhanced senses alert to every sound and movement. The shadows continued to whisper, their voices a constant presence in his mind.

As he walked through the narrow, winding streets, he overheard a conversation between two cloaked figures standing in a dark alley.

"Did you hear about the black market in the city?" one of the figures whispered, his voice hushed and conspiratorial.

"Yes," the other replied. "They say it's hidden behind the old tavern. It's known for rare and forbidden items."

Vaporeon's interest was piqued. A black market filled with rare and dangerous artifacts could hold the components he needed to grow his core. Deciding to investigate, he followed the whispers of the shadows, allowing them to guide his steps.

Navigating through the labyrinthine alleyways, Vaporeon eventually reached the entrance of the black market. It was concealed behind a decrepit tavern, its entrance marked by a barely visible symbol carved into the wall. He pushed open a heavy wooden door and descended a narrow staircase into the depths below.

The market was a hive of dark energy and dubious characters. The air was thick with the scent of incense and the hum of whispered deals. Each stall offered an array of rare and dangerous artifacts, from enchanted weapons to cursed relics.

Vaporeon walked through the crowded market, his eyes scanning the offerings. He saw merchants haggling with customers, their voices low and secretive. The shadows around him seemed to pulse with anticipation, as if sensing the potential for power that lay within this place.

At one stall, a mysterious merchant caught Vaporeon's eye. The merchant was a tall, hooded figure with a cloak. As Vaporeon approached, the merchant's eyes gleamed with a cunning intelligence.

"Ah, a seeker of power," the merchant said, his voice smooth and oily. "What can I offer you today?"

"I seek Obsidian." Vaporeon replied, his voice firm. "The genuine article."

The merchant smiled, a glint of greed in his eyes. "Obsidian is rare and costly. Are you sure you can afford it?"

Vaporeon's eyes narrowed. He used his enhanced senses to detect any deception. The merchant's aura was laced with deceit, but there was also a hint of genuine power. "I will not be deceived," Vaporeon said, his voice low and menacing. "Show me the real Obsidian, or face the consequences."

The merchant hesitated, then reached under his cloak and produced a small, black stone. Vaporeon sensed the dark energy emanating from it and knew it was the genuine article. "This is what you seek, but it comes at a steep price." the merchant said, his tone dripping with greed.

Vaporeon didn't have money, but he had something even more valuable - the rare ingredients he had taken from the alchemy lab. "I have something far more precious than gold," he said, pulling out the vials of rare ingredients and placing them on the counter. "These should more than cover the cost."

The merchant's eyes widened with interest as he inspected the vials. "Indeed, these are valuable," he admitted, though his gaze flickered with a desire to push for more. "But Obsidian is not something easily parted with. Perhaps you could offer a bit more?"

Vaporeon's patience wore thin. He stepped closer, his eyes darkening as he summoned the shadows around him. Tendrils of darkness coiled around his arms, flickering like serpents. "Do not mistake my generosity for weakness," he hissed. "You will accept this trade, or I will take the Obsidian by force."

The merchant's bravado faltered as he saw the display of Vaporeon's shadow magic. The tendrils of darkness writhed menacingly, casting an eerie glow over the market stall. "Very well," the merchant stammered, his greed overshadowed by fear. "The Obsidian is yours."

Vaporeon watched as the merchant carefully handed over the genuine Obsidian. The moment the stone was in his possession, he felt a surge of triumph. He had secured the first component needed to create the Abyss Core.

"You have made a wise decision," Vaporeon said, his voice dripping with menace. "Remember this moment the next time you consider deception."

The merchant nodded quickly, his face pale. "Of course, of course." he muttered, eager to see Vaporeon leave.

With the Obsidian in his possession, Vaporeon left the market, the shadows guiding his steps once more. As he walked through the darkened streets, he contemplated his next move. The Obsidian was only the first component. He still needed the Onyx Shard, Dragon's Blood Resin, Abyss Essence, and Soul Crystal to create the Abyss Core.

"The rest of the items won't be so easy to acquire."

As Vaporeon passed the old tavern above the black market, he decided to step inside. The tavern was dimly lit, filled with the smell of stale ale and the murmur of low conversations. He approached the bar and ordered a drink, listening to the conversations around him.

At a nearby table, two men were discussing a recent theft of rare magical items from a local mage. "They say the thief was skilled, left no trace," one of the men said, his voice hushed. "The mage is offering a hefty reward for any information."

Vaporeon's interest was piqued. He found a secluded corner of the tavern, pulled out a weathered map, and spread it across the table. His eyes scanned the various locations, his mind racing as he searched his memory for where the items he needed could be found. He remembered hearing whispers about the Cave of Shadows, a place known for its glowing onyx formations.

The Cave of Shadows, he thought. A mysterious cave located in the eastern forest, guarded by ancient spirits. It is known for its deep, dark tunnels and glowing onyx formations.

His concentration was interrupted by a rough voice. "That's an old map you've got there," a grizzled man said, leaning over to get a closer look. "You planning on going somewhere dangerous?"

Vaporeon's eyes flicked up, meeting the man's gaze. "I might be," he replied, his tone guarded. "Do you know anything about the Cave of Shadows?"

The man chuckled, his face lined with years of hard living. "Aye, I've heard tales. It's a treacherous place, filled with ancient spirits and dark magic. Many have gone in search of its treasures, but few have returned."

Vaporeon's interest deepened. "What do you know about the onyx formations within the cave?"

The man scratched his chin thoughtfully. "The onyx there is said to glow with an inner light, a rare sight. It's believed to be imbued with powerful magic, but getting to it is no easy task. The spirits guarding the cave don't take kindly to intruders."

Vaporeon nodded, absorbing the information. "And what of the path to the cave? Is there a safe route?"

"Safe? Haha no," the man replied, shaking his head. "But there are old trails that can lead you there if you know where to look. The eastern forest is dense and full of dangers, but if you're determined, you might just make it."

Vaporeon thanked the man and returned his attention to the map. He traced the path from his current location to the eastern forest, mentally preparing for the journey ahead. The Cave of Shadows was a long way from here, but he needed the onyx for his quest to create the Abyss Core.

As he rolled up the map, the man spoke again. "You seem like a determined fellow. Just remember, the cave has claimed many lives. If you're set on going, be prepared for the worst."

Vaporeon's eyes gleamed with resolve. "I always am."

With the map safely tucked away, Vaporeon left the tavern, the shadows whispering to him as he made his way through the darkened streets. His path was set, and the Cave of Shadows awaited. He felt a mix of excitement and anxiety, knowing the dangers that lay ahead.
