Chapter 3 - The Flight Part-I

After their little exchange, Captain Evans started to take off his shirt...

While Helen was still trying to figure out where the trail led, the cloud patterns were completely off from her mornings reading.

Helen had an old habit of taking a reading of the cloud patters, since she was very young, it was a cherished habit passed down to her, by now deceased father, a retired navy navigator.

As she couldn't understand the cloud pattern she turned to ask Captain Evans for his opinion, but to her shock, the Captain was shirtless and on all fours silently groaning.... this entire scene reminded her of the masochistic practices.... which of course Helen despised.

[Helen]

"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING CAPTAIN!"

[Captain Evans]

"You're the one that asked me to use my ability--"

[Helen]

"I ASKED TO USE YOUR ABILITY TO FLY US UP THERE, NOT TO GET HALF-NAKED AND TO GET DOWN ON YOUR FOURS!-Are you crazy or something?"

[Captain Evans]

"WOAH! Relax, this is how my ability works, if i didn't take my shirt off it would have been torn off by the formation process... and we would have found ourselves in a tough situation explaining where my/a captains shirt went off to...? Now wouldn't you want to avoid that happening?"

Helen couldn't really say anything yet again, things made sense so much so, that if she said anything else it would make her look like an idiot, and so she just nodded and said...

[Helen]

"Yeah-- right-- well, just hurry up....ok."

The Captain nodded and proceeded to grunt, which didn't exactly look very heroic and powerful but sure looked painful and took a minute but slowly a green mist started to gather around the captains back, and steadily started to take the shape of a pair of wings alone the spine, creating a harmony of 11 vertebrates each... creating a total of three pairs of wing's on the captains back...first pair was approximately 42" long the second pair was 168" and the third pair being 84" inches respectively.

The entire while the wing's were being formed on the Captains back, the Captain himself was in agony, because the process was a painstaking one, for it took all the nutrition and marrow from the bones and the muscles to create the wing's bone structure and in the process; hollow out the pre-existing bones to counter balance the weight of the body and the wings providing the ability to fly and not just turn into a show piece.

Slowly the green mist solidified itself into the wing's their muscles...once formed, the mist started to form the feathers... as light as the wind it self as the feathers formed some of them would float away from the captain and disperse, for it had left the formation zone....

All of this had happened within a matter of 5 to 10 minutes, as the formation took place, Helen had, to make sure that nobody saw this process and put up another Veil this one made sure to hide there presence in any and all ways possible the first veil was called silencer and the second one was called obscurer,  This was specially designed to refract light away from the user it's consistency was similar to the silencer's just created a different effect.

Sticking close to the users body creating a very thin and mucus like layer over the users entire body and if there was anybody within their vicinity (eg; 5 meters)

[Captain Evans]

"*Sigh...* Could you please pass me the red pouch from my shirt?"

[Helen]

"Sure, here..."

Helen tossed the red pouch towards the captain, but the captain didn't catch it. It landed right next to his right hand... then he picked it up, and ripped an opening with his teeth and gulped it down in a single go! making sure not to leave even a single drop inside it.

[Helen]

"What was it--?"

[Captain Evans]

"It's a protein pack, meant to give me some amount of strength to fly.... "

[Helen]

"Oh-ok, well then if your ready shall we get going?"

[Captain Evans]

"Sure! Let's move"

After saying that Captain just took Helen's arm in his hand and pulled her towards himself, picking her up, in order to fly together.

This action made Helen blush a little, but she made sure to suppress it in order to not make the scene even more awkward.

The moment Captain took Helen in his arms, the Silencer Veil enveloped them both together closely, in order to function more efficiently and not let them be seen or heard at the same time.

The gust that was generated as captain took off, was strong enough to blow away a group of 6 people, the thrust had to be strong enough to get both of them off the ground and into the air...

The hollowed out bones were useful to make the entire skeleton light yet nimble enough to make the user fly and not just drop dead on the ground. As Captain and Helen took off from the roof of the building, the Captain did his best to keep them both steady and slow in order to not scare Helen with the height and speed of their momentum.

The sky was pretty and calm this day, the winds were strong yet gentle, as if they were deliberately released in a calm manner to not scare this passenger... completely new to this part of the world, and not scare her away from itself.... To put it simply, it was as if the sky had come alive and was welcoming these two being into it's arm's.

Seeing this phenomenon, the Captain push his wings a little more harder to get to a higher vantage point from where they would be able to view the city as if it was a map drawn onto a piece of paper and nothing more than that.

As they got higher and higher, the oxygen in the air started to lessen, and it became hard to breath, for those who weren't built for these heights... so in response Helen drew out a compact cylinder with a Face Seal attached to it.

After she took it out, Helen put the canister to her face and took one long and deep breath, and offered the canister to the Captain.

[Helen]

"Here, this will help with breathing..."

The Captain just nodded his head, in a refusing manner and said--

[Captain Evans]

"I don't need it, when the wings grow on my back, it doesn't just hollow out my bones but also strengthens my lungs and eyes, and also makes me almost burn resistant, which is the only reason why I'm able to fly at such high speeds and such heights without the fear of burning or loosing my eye's"

[Helen]

"Okay.... Well, more for me then!"

This sentence made the Captain giggle a little, for he never expected such a childish reaction from Helen, because the way she carries herself and her manner of speaking combined with the fact of her working area and expertise, one could hardly imagine a person like to Helen White to say such a childishly innocent thing...

[Helen]

"What are you giggling about?"

[Captain Evans]

"Nothing, just... actually nothing..."

[Helen]

"Right..... any way, do you see that-- upward cut in the cloud's"

[Captain Evans]

"Yes"

[Helen]

"Well.... Follow it, it'll take us to the source of the whip"

[Captain Evans]

"Got it, hold on tight it's gonna be a bit turbulent up there, especially with our speed increase"

After saying that Captain Evans just made a strong flap with his wings and caught a thermal updraft in the winds that would carry them towards the cut cloud, getting to the cloud was the easy part, because it was barely 6 km's high from the ground the wind speed was favorable for normal drifting flight (8-9 knots), since it was a warm sunny day in London it made the flight much softer and easer.

As they arrived at the cloud, Helen noticed the unusual cut's pattern and asked Captain to follow the cut' lead, but before doing so the captain said...

[Captain Evans]

"We're gonna have a hard time getting up that high, the winds aren't as strong today and it's leading us towards the Tropopause which is quite a bit higher and the wind speeds can be very harsh up there"

[Helen]

"Can you go up there or not?"

[Captain Evans]

"Sure 'I' can, but i don't know about you being there, i have years worth of practice with the wind's but you don't"

[Helen]

"Don't give me excuses, if you can take us up there, i can handle myself don't worry..."

[Captain Evans]

"If you say so, but I'm sure it's going to lead us even higher"

Helen just nodded in approval, and so Captain Evans, caught another thermal updrift towards the tropopause which stands at the height average height of 8-15 km's, where they are met with the Polar Jet Stream (The jet stream is a high-speed, narrow air current found in the upper levels of the atmosphere, typically in the troposphere and occasionally extending into the lower stratosphere) there are typically two jet streams in the tropopause, but because of the summer Captain and Helen only encountered the Polar jet stream, going from West to North-East.

It usually goes from West to East but because of the summer period it gets bent towards the north pole, making the flow West to North-East.

This stream is known for its fast speed currents ranging from around 50 to 100 knots during the summer, but entering this current is known to be the hardest thing for organic flyers because to enter this stream one needs to achieve the speed of 5 to 20 meters per second at ascension.
