Chereads / Seraph's Ruin / Chapter 29 - Inside.

Chapter 29 - Inside.

A fair bit later, they stood at the front of the massive landship once again, staring up at the weathered hulk before them. It was a broken titan, sunken into the ground that had claimed its lower sections over the years. The forest had long since swallowed the ship, vines and foliage creeping up its sides like tendrils reclaiming the artificial structure. The front of the landship loomed large, half buried in the earth, the metal stairs that led up into its maw partially obscured by dirt and debris.

Despite its state of ruin, the landship exuded a sense of former glory—a colossal machine that had once been a force to be reckoned with. But now, it was a shell of what it once had been. And yet, even in this state of disrepair, it would serve a new purpose.

"It's not going anywhere anytime soon," Sera murmured, her eyes scanning the half-buried stairs. "But if we're careful, we might be able to get inside."

Zyra crouched down, peering at the buried entrance. "Doesn't look like it'll be easy, but I think we can manage. We've come this far."

Ava, on the other hand, was practically vibrating with excitement. Her eyes sparkled as she stared at the landship, as if it were the greatest treasure she had ever seen. "This is incredible," she whispered, her voice full of awe. "It's old, sure, but there's so much we can learn from this. The tech... I mean, just imagine what we could find inside."

Sera raised an eyebrow at Ava's enthusiasm but said nothing. Instead, she gestured to the rest of the group. "Alright, let's move carefully. We don't know what kind of condition the inside is in, so stay close and stay alert."

With some effort, they began to clear the debris from the stairwell, revealing enough of the path to climb inside. The steps groaned under their weight as they ascended, the metal rusted and worn from years of neglect. Each step echoed ominously in the silence of the forest, adding to the growing tension among the group.

As they reached the top, they stood before the entrance—once a grand gateway to the landship, now a rusted, jagged hole barely wide enough for them to pass through. Vines snaked their way into the ship's interior, as though nature itself had invaded and taken root.

Sera was the first to step inside, the dim light barely illuminating the corridor ahead. The air inside the landship was stale and heavy, thick with dust and the smell of decaying metal. The walls were rusted, some sections having completely crumbled away, leaving gaps that revealed the inner workings of the ship—exposed wires, broken machinery, and shattered bulkheads.

"Stay close," Sera whispered, her voice barely above a breath. "We don't know what's in here."

Ava followed close behind, her hands brushing along the walls as they walked deeper into the belly of the ship. Her fascination only grew as she inspected the landship's interior, even in its damaged state. "It's ancient," she muttered, half to herself. "Look at this tech… this design… it's so outdated, but there's something remarkable about it."

Zyra, who was bringing up the rear, scanned the darkened halls warily, her hand never straying far from her weapon. "Outdated or not, this place gives me the creeps," she muttered. "Feels like something's watching us."

The corridor stretched ahead of them, dim and foreboding. Rusted metal groaned beneath their feet, the sound echoing through the halls like the ghostly remnants of a once-great ship. Piles of debris blocked certain paths, and collapsed sections of the ceiling made it impossible to pass through in some areas. It was clear that the landship had seen better days, and its current state was far beyond repair.

As they pressed on, they found themselves moving deeper into the ship, each step feeling heavier than the last. The air grew colder, and the darkness seemed to close in around them. Their footsteps echoed in the emptiness, and every creak or groan from the ship sent their hearts racing.

They passed through rusted corridors that led them deeper into the ship's lower levels. On either side of them, they could see broken-down machinery, shattered monitors, and control panels long since dead. The landship was a graveyard of tech, its once-functional systems now nothing more than scrap.

"Look at this," Ava whispered, her voice full of awe as she stopped beside one of the broken machines. "This tech is ancient. I don't even know if we could get this running again. But... it's fascinating."

Sera crouched beside her, inspecting the damaged machinery. "Can we salvage any of it?"

Ava bit her lip, shaking her head. "Maybe, but not much. A lot of it's too far gone. We could strip it for parts, but it won't be enough to bring this thing back to life. Not in its current state."

The group pressed on, exploring what they could of the ship's interior. They passed through areas where entire sections of the ship had collapsed, the floor caving in beneath them or the walls crumbling into piles of rust and debris. Some hallways were completely blocked off, impassable due to the damage sustained over the years.

Despite the disrepair, Ava's fascination never wavered. Every piece of rusted tech she came across, every crumbling wall or shattered panel, seemed to fuel her excitement. She saw potential where the others saw only decay.

But the deeper they ventured, the more the tension grew. The ship's state made it clear that they wouldn't be able to fix it, not without serious resources and manpower. Even Ava, for all her enthusiasm, seemed to realize that the task ahead of them was daunting.

Sera, on the other hand, couldn't shake the feeling of unease that had settled over her. The landship felt empty—too empty. As if it were a tomb, waiting for something to stir within its depths.

"Do you hear that?" Zyra whispered suddenly, her voice tight with caution.

The group froze, their eyes darting around the dark corridor. Faint noises echoed through the halls—soft, almost imperceptible, like the sound of distant machinery whirring to life. But it was so faint, they couldn't be sure if it was real or just their imagination.

Sera clenched her jaw, her hand hovering over her weapon. "Keep moving. We're not alone here."

As they moved forward, the corridors led them to a massive chamber—likely the central hub of the landship. Broken consoles and shattered displays were strewn about, and the ceiling had partially collapsed, blocking their access to the upper floors. It was a mess of debris, machinery, and tangled wires.

Ava's eyes widened as she took in the sight. "This… this could've been the control room," she whispered. "But it's in worse shape than I thought."

Zyra grimaced. "Worse shape? It's a wreck. There's no way we can use any of this."

Sera, however, saw something else. Beneath the layers of rust, decay, and broken machinery, she saw potential. The landship might be beyond repair, but the parts... the pieces of tech they could salvage… they could still make something of it however naive the thought was.
