Kirito stood in the bustling central plaza of Aincrad, his eyes wide with confusion and a growing sense of dread. He had reached the plaza hoping to log out and return to the real world, but the logout button had mysteriously disappeared from the menu. His heart raced as he tried again and again, but the result was the same. Panic began to set in as he glanced around at the other players, who were also frantically trying to log out.
The plaza was a sea of avatars, their faces etched with confusion and fear. Voices rose in a cacophony of questions and exclamations. Some players were shouting for answers, while others desperately fiddled with their menus, hoping for a solution that wasn't there. The atmosphere was thick with anxiety, the realization slowly dawning on everyone that something was very, very wrong.
Suddenly, a blinding light filled the plaza, and a massive figure appeared above the crowd. The players fell silent, their attention drawn to the figure. It was a tall, robed man with a stern face and piercing eyes. He radiated an aura of authority and power. Kirito recognized him instantly from the game's promotional material: Kayaba Akihiko, the head programmer of Sword Art Online.
"Welcome to my world," Kayaba's voice boomed, echoing through the plaza. "I am Kayaba Akihiko, the creator of Sword Art Online. I'm sure many of you have already noticed that the logout button is missing from your main menu. This is not a defect in the game. I repeat, this is not a defect. It is a feature of Sword Art Online."
A wave of disbelief and horror swept through the crowd. Players exchanged shocked glances, their faces pale. Kayaba continued, his expression unchanging. "You cannot log out of SAO by any means. If someone attempts to forcibly remove the NerveGear, it will result in the destruction of your brain, ending your life. The only way to escape is to clear the game."
The plaza erupted into chaos. Shouts of anger, fear, and disbelief filled the air. Some players fell to their knees, while others grabbed their heads in despair. Kirito felt a cold sweat break out across his body. This couldn't be happening. It was just a game, a virtual world. How could it suddenly become a matter of life and death?
Kayaba raised his hand, and the crowd quieted once more. "In order to clear the game, you must reach the 100th floor of Aincrad and defeat the final boss. Only then will you be able to log out and return to the real world. Remember, there are no second chances. When your HP drops to zero, your avatar will be deleted, and the NerveGear will destroy your brain. This is the only reality now."
With that, Kayaba Akihiko vanished into thin air, leaving the players to grapple with the horrifying reality he had laid before them. Kirito stood frozen, his mind racing. He was just an ordinary player, not a beta tester, and certainly not skilled with swords. The thought of facing such a challenge was overwhelming. He could feel the panic rising within him.
As the crowd began to disperse, a player approached Kirito. He was a tall, red-haired man with a friendly expression. "Hey, you look like you're in shock too. My name's Klein," he said, extending a hand. "Want to team up? I've got a guild, and we could use more members."
Kirito shook Klein's hand, grateful for the offer. "I'm Kirito," he replied. "But I'm not even good enough to beat the first floor. I don't think I'd be much help to your guild."
Klein smiled reassuringly. "Don't worry about that. We'll figure it out together. What do you say?"
Kirito hesitated, then shook his head. "I appreciate the offer, but I think I'll try to go solo for now. But let's add each other as friends. We can keep in touch and help each other out when needed."
Klein nodded, accepting Kirito's decision. "Alright, sounds good. Stay safe out there, Kirito. This world is going to be tough, but we can make it through."
The two exchanged friend requests, and Klein rejoined his guild. Kirito watched as the players around him began to form groups or venture out on their own. Determination hardened within him. He didn't have the skills or experience, but he couldn't afford to let fear control him. He had to survive, to reach the 100th floor and escape this nightmare.
Taking a deep breath, Kirito steeled himself and began to move. He would become a solo player, pushing forward as far as he could go. He had no choice but to adapt and grow stronger. His life depended on it.
As the sun set over Aincrad, Kirito set off on his own, determined to face whatever challenges lay ahead. The journey to the 100th floor had begun.
