Chapter 2 - CHAPTER 1

It's been a week since I transmigrated into a book I read on the train. On the first day, I took it calmly because I thought this was just a dream and I would soon wake up as usual. But... no.

Yes, I woke up, but I was still inside the book. And what's worse, I transmigrated to ancient China.

I was wandering outside my courtyard, looking at the beautiful scenery in front of me while pondering what I should do next. If I really died, then this is my second chance to live. Perhaps this is a gift from the greatest god.

In this book, I remember the character I'm inhabiting is a general. A cold-blooded, merciless, and handsome general. General Zhen Sheng.

It's okay to be cold-blooded and merciless, at least if you're rich, right?

Yes, the character I'm inhabiting is incredibly rich—a man so wealthy that even the emperor shudders when seeing him. Only nobles know this fact, as the emperor still needs to maintain a clean and majestic image for the civilians.

Ah! I now remember the general has three thousand soldiers under his command, known for being as relentless as machines. Machines because they never seem to tire while fighting till dawn.

This general is not as cold-hearted as the rumors say. Actually, he is spoiled by his mother. But he is merciless. It's because he grew up wanting to be like his father, believing a general should not show mercy, especially not to spies.

And the second proof that this general is not a cold-hearted animal is... he fell in love. And it's bad. Very, very bad.

Why? He fell in love with the protagonist's wife! It's okay to be in love, but it's not okay to love the female lead! The protagonist in this book is the fifth prince, Shen Yulin.

A perfect prince, they said. Academics, medicine, even on the battlefield, he excelled in all. But this perfect prince doesn't want the title of crown prince. Why? I don't know... The author didn't say in the novel.

I sighed as a petal fell into my hand. I looked to my left and saw a tree across from me. It was a beautiful peach blossom tree. Maybe a strong wind suddenly blew this poor petal into my hand. Just like how I suddenly transmigrated into this novel. Oh, my poor life.

Should I avoid the two protagonists and start living my own life? What if I cause a butterfly effect in this story and suddenly die? I shivered at the thought of that. I once died, and I know what that feels like.

Oh, my poor cat, Hessiah. I rubbed my aching forehead as I thought of my cat. What if he also died because of starvation? The thought of that made my eyes burn. I need to go back; my Hessiah needs me. Maybe he has cat food, but he wouldn't eat it without me handing it to him!

I started walking towards the peach blossom tree. This tree was the first to welcome me to this world. It was the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes in this strange place.

Resting my head against the tree, I watched its petals fly away into the sky. It was like this tree loved to make people happy with its petals, but also feel sentimental.

I really don't like wearing robes; it always feels like the skirt will be blown away by a strong wind. Plus, I feel extra cold in these clothes. I stopped thinking strange ideas as something popped into my head.

If I am a man from a modern world, then I have an advantage here in this ancient time! Perhaps I could do some cooking? Well, I only know how to cook ramen. Hmm! Should I open a shop for clothes? I don't know how to make clothes. But I could hire someone to make them.

Then I slapped my forehead. Yeah, I just remembered this body I occupy is that of a general. A rich general. One of the elites in this empire. So I do not need to make money anymore because our household has tons of it.

This is exhausting me. I have never tried using my thinking skills this seriously. It always makes me sleepy. I closed my eyes and felt my peaceful surroundings. The one thing I love in this timeline is the richness of nature. How fresh the wind of the cities feels.

But I always wonder: did this man die while watching the peach blossom tree? Why was he looking at the tree at that time? When I look at this tree, I always have this feeling like a whole bunch of ants is eating my heart. It always hurts, always anticipating, waiting.

I shrugged it off as it's not important to think about the past of this body. What if he just had a lover and they broke up? It's actually not my fault they broke up. It's not like I'm the one who had a relationship with them.

I remember in the novel, the two protagonists are the epitome of true rulers. Because when their prime began, many things happened. So many laws were changed. Even the equality of gender was recognized. In ancient times, only men had the right to own land and hold positions. But with how stubborn those two were, they made it possible for women to have their own rights too.

I like how they're so alike that I couldn't help but read their story. It's so addicting that it also gives a moral lesson to the reader. Like how the male lead always proves that he loves his country more than himself. And how the female lead has that strong mind and trait perfect for being the male lead's partner.

They are really made for each other.

But sadly, there is also someone who secretly hurts by their side. He is always there to support the female lead's decisions, always there to protect her even if it costs him his own life. But he will never be the one that the female lead loves. He is just a side character, or worse, the second male lead.

It is sad that this body blackened because of love, but I can't blame him for that. He sacrificed everything, more than the male lead, but he was not chosen.

A scene from the novel started playing in my mind. It was the protagonists' wedding day. As the bride started to walk towards the altar, Zheng Sheng's thoughts were, "If she was wearing that red dress for me," and "If I was the crown prince, would she love me back now?" That was when the second male lead blackened. The only thought that came to his mind was how to kill the emperor as he sat on the throne he longed for. Not for himself, but to be the man the female lead wanted.
