Chapter 1 - introduction

In the quiet town of Sanada, nestled between the foothills and the city's outskirts, stood a towering concrete bastion of education: Sanada North Boys High School. It was a place where the whispers of adolescence echoed through the hallways, a stage for the dramas of youth, and a crucible for lifelong friendships. Tadakuni, a boy of average height and unassuming demeanor, walked to school with a gait that suggested he'd rather be elsewhere. He didn't dread school, but the mundane routine had worn him down. The chilly spring air nipped at his nose as he approached the gates, the scent of blooming sakura trees wafting over the schoolyard, hinting at the promise of warmer days ahead.

Beside him, Hidenori Tabata, a broad-shouldered, sturdy-looking student with a penchant for wearing bandages, strolled with a casual confidence that seemed to stem from his love of physical activity. He was the kind of guy who could be found at the basketball courts during lunch, rain or shine. The two had been friends since childhood, and even though they were as different as night and day, they shared a bond that seemed unshakeable. Tadakuni envied Hidenori's ability to glide through life without a care in the world, his unshakable optimism a beacon in the sea of teenage angst.

Yoshitake Tanaka, the third wheel of their trio, was a tad taller and had a head of hair that looked like it hadn't seen a comb in weeks. His eyes, often obscured by thick glasses, held a mischievous glint that spoke of his love for practical jokes. He was the one who could always be counted on to lighten the mood with a well-timed quip or an absurd observation. As they approached the school, Tanaka spotted something peculiar: a new student, her hair dyed a vibrant shade of pink, standing alone by the bike racks.

"Looks like we've got a fresh face," he murmured to Tadakuni and Hidenori. "Maybe she's lost."

The new student, who introduced herself as Yuko, looked up at the sound of their footsteps. She had an air of detachment about her, as if she'd seen the world through a lens that had since been cracked. Her eyes met Tadakuni's for a brief moment, and he felt a strange jolt of recognition. It was as if he'd known her forever, yet she was a complete stranger. She spoke softly, explaining she was looking for the office to get her class schedule. The three friends exchanged glances, a silent agreement passing between them, and offered to show her the way.

As they walked, Yuko spoke little, her eyes scanning the school grounds with a mix of curiosity and wariness. Tadakuni felt a strange responsibility to make her feel welcome, a feeling that grew stronger with each step they took. The school bell rang out, a harsh metallic clang that sent a shiver down Tadakuni's spine. It was time for another day of lessons, but as they approached the office, it was clear that their lives had just become a little less ordinary. The story of the three friends from Sanada North Boys High School was about to take an unexpected turn, one that would test their friendship and shape their futures in ways they couldn't possibly imagine.
