Chapter 4 - Chapter Three

"X'qrthu narl'goth..."

In the stillness of the Skeld, the faintest hint of a scraping sound dared to disturb the eerie silence that had befallen the ship. Unintelligible whispers sliced through the quiet, their sinister murmur echoing through the chambers and into the ear of an unsuspecting crewmate. The whispers persisted, a relentless mantra that seeped into their consciousness, shattering any semblance of tranquility.

The crewmate's eyes snapped open, horror etching itself upon their face as they felt an unearthly presence force its way into their ear. Before they could react, an agonizing pain coursed through their body, as if their skin were being pierced by a thousand needles, and their orifices were being grotesquely violated. A chilling sensation spread through their form like frost over a windowpane, signaling the presence that now slivered through their bloodstream and internal organs.

Driven by instinct, the crewmate attempted to flee from their bed, only to collapse to their knees as blood gushed from their mouth and eyes, pooling on the cold floor beneath them. Their body trembled with uncontrollable spasms, the sharp odor of blood and sweat mingling in the air as their muscles grew weak and their vision dimmed.

No scream escaped their lips; instead, the sickening sound of blood gurgling from their throat filled the room, punctuated by their ragged, wet breaths. Beneath their skin, a symphony of grotesque sounds accompanied the invasion - the wet, slithering noise of the entity as it forced its way through their flesh, the sickening pop and crackle of bones and cartilage giving way, and the visceral, squelching sound of their organs being twisted and manipulated.

Despair and horror filled the crewmate's mind as their consciousness began to fade, their connection to their own body severed as they were cast into a dark, lonely recess of their own mind.

As the crewmate faced their imminent end, terror enveloped them, marking their final moments. Their body, now under the control of an outside force, was no longer their own. With the void rapidly approaching, their hearing became the last sense to slip away, only to suddenly clarify the whispers that had haunted them..

"Kill everyone..."

The Navigation Room aboard The Skeld, illuminated by the soft glow of various control panels and monitors, exuded a sense of tranquility despite its high-tech equipment. At the heart of the room were three state-of-the-art seats, each situated in front of an array of buttons and switches, while the central seat commanded a more comprehensive control panel. The layout of the room was optimized for efficiency, with every inch meticulously planned to serve a purpose in their interstellar journey.

A large, circular window dominated the far wall, offering a stunning, unobstructed view of the cosmos, where distant stars sparkled like diamonds against the infinite darkness. To the left, several monitors displayed crucial real-time data on the ship's trajectory, velocity, and fuel consumption. A central control panel, adorned with an intricate array of buttons, switches, and a holographic display, was positioned directly in front of the window, projecting a three-dimensional map of their voyage through the stars.

Evelyn, dressed in an emerald green blouse, light beige linen skirt, and green ballet flats, adorned with a delicate gold bracelet, jade earrings, and a woven belt, leaned against Caleb's seat, her gaze transfixed by the awe-inspiring view outside the window. "Space is truly beautiful, isn't it, Caleb?" she murmured, her voice filled with wonder and appreciation for the vast cosmos.

Caleb, sporting a fitted navy button-down shirt, dark wash jeans, and polished navy loafers, completed with a silver watch and minimalist cufflinks that mirrored his cool, calculating demeanor, nodded in agreement. "Indeed, Evelyn," he concurred, equally mesmerized by the distant galaxies and the technological marvel that facilitated their voyage through the depths of space.

However, Caleb's attention soon shifted to his iPad, where a detailed schematic of their spacecraft was displayed. The interface was engineered to alert crew members of any anomalies or potential threats, represented by small, pulsating red indicators. Normally, the screen would remain a calm, unassuming blue, but now, a cluster of red blinkers had appeared along the outer edge of the ship's blueprint.

The iPad's display showed a cross-section of the spacecraft, with its various compartments and corridors labeled in crisp white text. The blinking red indicators were concentrated near one of the maintenance airlocks on the port side of the ship. As Caleb zoomed in on the affected area, he could see that the indicators were spread across a short section of the hull, forming an irregular pattern.

Upon tapping one of the red blinkers, a small pop-up window appeared, providing additional information about the nature of the disturbance. The words "Hull Breach Detected" were displayed in bold red text. Caleb's concern grew, and he knew he had to alert the rest of the crew to the potential danger as soon as possible.

Despite the mesmerizing beauty of the cosmos, Caleb understood that their safety was paramount. With a newfound sense of urgency, he began to strategize how best to inform his fellow crew members and address the issue at hand.

"There's something wrong," Caleb announced, rising from his chair and looking at Evelyn. "The ship's surface has been breached."

Evelyn's eyes widened in surprise. "What do you mean? How is there a breach?" she asked. "I don't remember us being near anything before we fell asleep."

"It likely occurred while we were sleeping," Caleb said, putting down his iPad and exiting the Navigation Room, with Evelyn following closely behind.

"Will you keep charge of the ship, Evelyn?" Caleb inquired, glancing at the young woman beside him as they traversed the corridor of the Skeld ship.

Evelyn's voice was soft as she responded, "Sure, I can do that." Her concern was evident as she added, "I just hope that the damage isn't bad."

"I'm sure it's not that bad. Nikolai and I will go check it out," Caleb reassured Evelyn, offering her a comforting smile.

As they continued down the corridor, they passed the Weapons Room, where Damian was engrossed in his usual routine of playfully shooting at imaginary targets in space. Caleb let out a huff of amusement, while Evelyn chuckled softly at the scene.

Next, they entered the kitchen, where they found Rosemary sporting a bear-eared headband, one of the many accessories Oliver and Dawn had brought aboard the ship. It was clear that she had taken a liking to the whimsical accessory as she admired her reflection with a hand held mirror.

Rosemary, adorned in a pale pink silk blouse, white capri pants, and pink ballet flats, glanced upwards as the familiar sound of footsteps caught her attention. Her gaze landed on Caleb and Evelyn, and a gentle smile graced her lips as she rose from her seat and made her way towards them. Her voice, soft and melodic, carried a note of curiosity as she inquired, "Where are the two of you headed?"

"Hello, Rose," Caleb greets the young woman calmly. "I am actually looking for Nikolai. Do you know where he is?"

Rosemary hums and goes into deep thought, while Evelyn grabs a water bottle from the pack of waters on the floor in the corner of the cafeteria.

"I think he's in the Storage Room," Rosemary answers with a soft smile. "Why do you need to see him?"

"We have a problem," Caleb answers. "There was a breach on the ship, and I need Nikolai's help to fix it." Evelyn walks back towards the two while drinking her water bottle.

"A breach? Is it serious?" Rosemary inquired, her voice tinged with worry as the trio traversed the middle hallway into the Storage Room. The stark, utilitarian walls and the intermittent flicker of fluorescent lights seemed to portend the gravity of the situation.

As they entered the Storage Room, they were met with a sight both familiar and disquieting. The expansive space was dominated by a maze of imposing shelves, each lined with an array of cargo crates, essential equipment, and spare parts crucial to the ship's upkeep. The room was bathed in the harsh, artificial glow of overhead lights, casting eerie shadows that stretched across the cold, metallic floor. The atmosphere was redolent with the sharp smells of lubricants and cleaning agents, while the rhythmic hum of machinery added to the foreboding ambiance. In the heart of the Storage Room, several stacks of crates and boxes towered high, forming a makeshift barricade of sorts.

Caleb offers a reassuring nod. "It should be fine," he says, surveying the Storage Room while Evelyn explores the area.

Evelyn's voice rings out from behind a tower of boxes. "I found him," she declares. Caleb and Rosemary make their way towards the source of Nikolai's unmistakable voice.

Nikolai is dressed in a fitted black t-shirt that accentuates his physique, paired with black jeans that hug his legs in all the right places. His polished black Chelsea boots lend an air of sophistication to his ensemble. A black leather cuff bracelet encircles his wrist, while a pair of onyx stud earrings glint in the dim light, embodying his enigmatic and alluring persona.

As they approach, Nikolai continues methodically sorting through boxes overflowing with tools and equipment. Without looking up, he asks, "What brings you here?" His focused approach to gathering materials is a familiar routine for the experienced repairman.

Caleb gets straight to the point. "There's been a breach, and I need your help," he states directly. Nikolai looks up from his task, raising an eyebrow in response. "A breach, huh?" he acknowledges, before returning his attention to the boxes. "Give me a minute to organize a few things, and then I'll get changed." His words convey a sense of efficient professionalism, unperturbed by the urgency of the situation.

Nikolai is occupied with organizing, and Caleb turns to Rosemary, intending to ask her to stay, understanding her yearning for exploration. She interrupts him with a cheerful smile, "Can I go?" expressing her eagerness to float in space for leisure and enjoyment.

Caleb sighs, acknowledging the difficulty in handling Rosemary, the youngest of the group. Undeniably kind-hearted, her curiosity and innocence often guide her actions, making her challenging to manage in comparison to Dawn and Oliver.

With a resigned sigh, Caleb concedes, "Alright, you can go, but -" His words are abruptly cut short as Rosemary dashes off to fetch her suit, her excitement palpable. Caleb releases yet another sigh, prompting Evelyn to chuckle. "I'll go check on the others," she says gently, soothingly caressing Caleb's shoulders before departing, as Nikolai stands up.

The two males exchange a silent nod, signifying mutual understanding, before diverging to get changed. Their footsteps reverberate through the corridors, punctuated by metallic clangs as they traverse the floor.

Evelyn's purposeful stride carries her through the ship's corridors in search of Dawn and Oliver. Confident in Damian's predictable location within the Weapons Room, she presses on until she discovers the couple in the Reactor Room.

Dawn is clad in a yellow floral-print sundress, perfectly complemented by a white denim jacket and tan sandals. A sunflower pendant necklace graces her neck, and a charming straw hat rests atop her head, encapsulating her radiant and cheerful nature.

Oliver sports an orange polo shirt, tastefully paired with khaki chinos and brown suede chukka boots. A leather belt circles his waist, and a copper bracelet adorns his wrist, subtly hinting at his fiery passion and intensity.

The Reactor Room, a vital center for the spacecraft's power generation, is dominated by the massive reactor responsible for supplying energy throughout the vessel. An imposing reactor claw stands tall, emitting an ethereal laser beam that bathes the room in an otherworldly glow. Advanced computers monitor the reactor's vital signs, their screens shimmering in the dim light with reflections that add to the mystical ambiance. Fingerprint scanners adorn the walls on each side of the reactor, acting as essential safeguards against potential meltdowns. For now, the room remains peaceful, with the reactor emitting a steady, calming hum as it efficiently powers the ship.

The echoing footsteps capture Dawn and Oliver's attention, prompting them to turn their heads. Upon seeing Evelyn, Dawn's face brightens with a warm smile. "Hey, Eve! How are you?" she asks, approaching the older woman.

"I'm doing well," Evelyn hums, her gaze shifting between Oliver and Dawn, catching a glimpse of their intertwined hands as they admire the reactor in wonder. The sight is endearing to her. "I can tell you two are doing well, too."

Dawn giggles in response, while Oliver joins in with a hearty laugh. He wraps his arms around Evelyn in a playful embrace, leaning against her in a display of their friendship.

"Oh, right. There was a breach," Evelyn speaks up, addressing a more pressing matter.

"A breach?" Dawn and Oliver exclaim in unison, their faces etched with concern. However, Dawn soon brushes it off with a laugh. "It's probably nothing, right, Evelyn?"

"It probably is," Evelyn replies softly, gingerly removing Oliver's hand from her shoulder and stepping away, avoiding any chance of inciting jealousy in sweet Dawn. "Caleb is going to check it out with Rosemary and Nikolai."

"I thought he would bring Damian -" Dawn pauses, her attention diverted by the sound of approaching footsteps. A grin spreads across her face as she catches sight of the newcomer. "Speak of the devil."

Damian's voice, laced with faux outrage, resonates throughout the Reactor Room. "There was a breach, and nobody invited me?!"

The speaker himself cuts a striking figure, attired in a luxurious crimson cashmere sweater, which he pairs with form-fitting black skinny jeans. Polished red leather boots complete the ensemble, while a gold watch and a ruby-encrusted ring serve as understated yet opulent accessories—a subtle nod to his refined and extravagant taste.

Evelyn and Oliver swivel to face Damian, both amused by his reaction. Oliver chuckles as Evelyn sighs with a smile, explaining, "You weren't there when it was decided." Oliver, grinning widely, interjects, "He was definitely focused on wasting our weapon in the Weapons Room -"

"Shut up! I wasn't wasting the weapon!" Damian exclaims, his voice rising in frustration as he crosses his arms over his chest.

Evelyn, a smile playing on her lips, approaches Damian and pats his shoulder. "See? Your temper is precisely why you weren't invited," she teases calmly, a hint of playfulness in her tone as she exits into the hallway.

"Hey, Eve! I don't have a temper! I just want to venture into space!" Damian retorts, following her to the cafeteria.

Dawn and Oliver remain behind, chuckling at the entertaining exchange. Turning her head, Dawn gazes up at Oliver, her voice brimming with warmth. "I'm so grateful to have met them," she murmurs, enveloping Oliver in a tender embrace, her cheek pressed against his chest.

Oliver responds with a soft smile, enveloping Dawn in a loving hug. He tenderly places a kiss on the top of her head and whispers, "Yes, they truly are remarkable friends."

Giggling, Dawn pulls back slightly, moving her arms to wrap around Oliver's neck. Leaning in, she plants a tender, loving kiss on his lips, which Oliver eagerly reciprocates. The kiss lingers for a few seconds before Dawn gently draws away. "Come on! Let's catch up with them!" she exclaims joyfully, sprinting out of the Reactor Room and down the hallway. With a lighthearted chuckle, Oliver swiftly follows in her wake, chasing after his vivacious lover.

Dawn rushes into the cafeteria, where Evelyn and Damian are already present. Damian, now seemingly calm, helps himself to some food from the previous night, while Evelyn stands by with her water bottle, observing him and awaiting the arrival of the couple.

"So," Evelyn breaks the silence as Dawn and Oliver enter the room. Without hesitation, Oliver makes a beeline for Damian, playfully attempting to steal a bite of his lasagna and bread. In response, Damian delivers a firm smack to the back of Oliver's neck, earning a groan from the other male.

Chuckling at the exchange, Evelyn announces, "I'll be in charge until Caleb returns."

"Like hell you are!" Damian exclaims, forcefully pushing Oliver's face away from his meal. He glances up at Evelyn, his amber eyes filled with annoyance. "My leadership skills are far superior to yours, Evelyn."

Evelyn simply chuckles and shrugs in response. "Caleb designated me as the one in charge, so that's how it is." She takes a seat next to Damian, while Oliver and Dawn settle down together across from them.

Dawn's laughter rings out brightly as she holds a glass of juice in her hand, presumably acquired while the others were preoccupied. "You two are behaving as if Caleb is never coming back," she remarks, amused by Evelyn and Damian's banter.

The group savors these tranquil moments aboard The Skeld, as Evelyn softly expresses their shared hope for the swift resolution of the breach. Meanwhile, Damian and Oliver continue to playfully engage in their antics, with Oliver persistently attempting to pilfer a bite of Damian's food, much to the amusement of Dawn and Evelyn. For the time being, the ship is bathed in an atmosphere of peace and camaraderie, the gentle hum of machinery serving as the backdrop to their relaxed interactions.

In space, Caleb, Nikolai, and Rosemary are equipped with advanced, self-contained atmospheric suits that allow them to traverse the hazardous vacuum of space without the need for tethers. These suits, fitted with intricate life support systems and built-in propulsion units, enable the astronauts to perform essential repairs on the exterior of The Skeld.

As the leader, Caleb's spacesuit would still be a deep navy blue, with silver accents and a reflective silver visor. However, his suit would now display a silver-embroidered "Captain" insignia, denoting his role as the leader of the crew.

"Is the breach fixed?" Caleb's voice filters through the radio communicator of his blue spacesuit, seeking an update from Nikolai.

Nikolai's spacesuit retains its primarily black color scheme, complemented by subtle dark gray accents and a dark gray visor. His suit now displays a dark gray-embroidered "Engineer" insignia, emphasizing his duty to maintain and repair The Skeld's systems.

"Yeah, I got it," Nikolai replies in his characteristic husky voice, as he carefully runs his hand over the area of the ship where the breach was located. Using his advanced knowledge of engineering, Nikolai had expertly applied a high-strength nano sealant to the breach, allowing it to bond with the ship's exterior and create an airtight seal.

"Guys! Look!"

Rosemary's voice is heard floating nearby and she sounded like she was in awe. She was wearing a spacesuit with a pastel pink, with white accents and a pink-tinted visor. Her suit would display a white-embroidered "Junior Assistant" insignia.

Responding to Rosemary's call, Nikolai and Caleb gently push themselves away from the ship, keeping one hand intact, redirecting their gaze towards the source of her astonishment. As they turn, the breathtaking beauty of Earth unfolds before them.

From their vantage point in space, Earth appears as a vibrant, swirling orb suspended against a backdrop of infinite darkness. Its radiant blue oceans, interlaced with swirling patterns of clouds, capture the light of the distant sun, casting an ethereal glow across the planet's surface. The outlines of continents appear as sprawling landmasses, their green hues marking the teeming life that thrives beneath the atmosphere.

As Nikolai, Caleb, and Rosemary gaze upon the mesmerizing sight of Earth, a serene silence descends upon them. Against the backdrop of infinite darkness, their home planet appears as a vibrant oasis of life, emphasizing its delicate beauty and rarity within the cosmos.

Their perilous mission aboard The Skeld temporarily fades from their thoughts as they share this profound moment of connection with one another. The boundless expanse of space feels less isolating as they stand together, unified by their shared experience.
