Chapter 1 - LET THE CHASE BEGIN

The chase begins

Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Nyx Caldewin, her long black hair pulled back in a high ponytail with a white ribbon, was engrossed in a book. Her grey eyes, framed by dark lashes like delicate butterflies, flickered across the pages.

Dressed in her favorite black dress, she was the picture of elegance. The room itself spoke of a meticulous packing job. The bed was neatly made, white sheets contrasting with the dark mahogany furniture. Open suitcases lay on the floor, overflowing with neatly folded clothes.

A knock on the door interrupted her reading. Her eyes lit up, a smile gracing her lips.

"Come in," she called out, her voice as melodious as a tinkling stream.

The door creaked open, revealing a man in a crisp Osborne suit. A silver lion crest on his lapel proclaimed his affiliation to the Caldewin household. His white hair, a stark contrast to his tanned face, spoke of years spent outdoors.

"Miss Caldewin, I presume?" he inquired, his voice gruff but respectful. "I am Mr. Brian, from the Caldewin estates. I've been sent to escort you to the capital by your aunt."

He took in the room, his gaze lingering on the packed suitcases. "It seems you're all prepared for the journey."

Nyx rose from her chair, her slender neck a column of milky white against the black dress. With a graceful curtsy, she introduced herself.

"Lord Brian, I am Lady Nyx Caldewin of the Caldewin house."

A hint of disapproval flickered across Mr. Brian's face.

"There's no need for formalities, my lady. I am but a butler, at your service."

Here's the continuation of the scene:

Mr. Brian offered her his arm, and Nyx graciously accepted. As they descended the stairs towards the fjord, he couldn't help but notice the maids bowing their heads as they passed, their blue uniforms a stark contrast to Nyx's elegant black dress. It was almost as if they hadn't noticed their lady leaving. A frown creased Mr. Brian's brow. This wasn't right. The Caldewins were known for their influence and strong presence. Whispers of Nyx's treatment after her mother's death had reached the capital, and this only confirmed his suspicions.

He couldn't erase the joy that had lit up her eyes when he'd arrived with news of the trip. He made a mental note to report everything he'd witnessed to the family head.

"Lady Nyx," he called softly, his voice gentled.

Nyx met his gaze, her grey eyes filled with a question.

Leaning in slightly, he whispered, "There's no need to keep your head down, young lady. You have far too much beauty to hide."

A blush bloomed on Nyx's cheeks, spreading like fire across her face. He chuckled inwardly at her innocent reaction. "Thank you," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. "You're very kind."

Mr. Brian maintained a stoic expression. "Flattery won't get you anywhere with an old man like me, child."

Nyx's lips curved into a genuine smile, a sound escaping her lips like wind chimes. It was the first unguarded expression he'd seen on her face.

As they reached the fjord yard, Nyx stopped in her tracks, her eyes widening as she took in the vastness of the scene. It was a stark contrast to the confines of her room. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a caged bird finally released. A silent gratitude welled up within her.

Moments later, several men emerged from the house, carrying her luggage and a large trunk. Following them was an older woman, her iron-grey hair pulled back in a tight bun – Lady Iseul, the head maid. After a brief exchange of goodbyes, Nyx and Mr. Brian climbed into the waiting carriage.

Nyx pressed her face against the cool glass of the carriage window, devouring the sights rushing past. The towering trees dwarfed even the lone oak that graced her former residence. Crystal-clear fountains bubbled merrily, and an unexpected silence pervaded the woods, broken only by the rhythmic clopping of the horses' hooves. A smile tugged at her lips as she ran a hand along her arm. The memory of her confinement in the godforsaken mansion still stung.

It was a truth she understood all too well – rich daughters were often cloistered away, their beauty deemed too precious for the outside world, or simply following obscure family traditions. But what had been her mother's excuse? Nyx had been provided for – adorned with jewels, clothed in finery, and fed exquisite meals. Yet, these were mere gilded bars in her gilded cage.

Conversation with the maids was forbidden, their gazes studiously averted. Nighttime walks in the garden were her only reprieve. A pang of sorrow shot through her as she recalled her final confrontation with her ever-distant mother.

The scene flickered in her mind's eye: a simple meal, a question hesitantly posed. "Why can't I go outside, Mother?" Her mother's response was slow, laced with a strange hesitation. "The world is a dangerous place, Nyx, not for the faint of heart."

Undeterred, Nyx pressed on. "But why do the maids avoid me? Even my personal maid won't speak to me."

A tight smile played on her mother's lips. "She knows her place, child. It's best not to get involved."

But Nyx wasn't satisfied. "Am I not your daughter? Why do you keep me locked away like a caged bird? I've read about children playing freely, young ladies attending grand balls and social gatherings..." her voice trailed off, a hopeful glint in her eyes, "...even falling in love, experiencing a true love's kiss."

That's when everything changed. Her mother rose abruptly, a flicker of rage replacing her usual indifference. A stinging slap echoed in the vast emptiness of the room. "Who has been filling your head with such nonsense? What books have you been reading?" she hissed, her voice laced with venom.

Lady Iseul materialized at her summons, whisking away the forbidden books. They vanished in a pyre of flames, and Nyx's world shrunk even further. The memory sent a fresh wave of anger coursing through her. Yet, amidst the turmoil, a spark of defiance ignited. The world beyond the mansion walls beckoned, and Nyx, for the first time, was determined to answer its call.

*********

"We've arrived, Lady Nyx," Mr. Brian announced gently.

Nyx's eyes fluttered open, blinking away the remnants of sleep that clung to her like cobwebs. The journey had been long and draining, and she had succumbed to sleep for a while. Her lips parted slightly, like a fish gasping for air, as she took in the scene outside. Her gaze, wide and curious, darted through the window.

A smile bloomed on her face as she reached for the curtains and drew them aside. The carriage had entered a bustling marketplace – the heart of the capital. Children chased each other with joyous abandon, their laughter echoing through the air. Little girls, their hair adorned with playful pigtails, sat on stoops, braiding each other's hair. The air thrummed with the energy of commerce – buyers and sellers bartering, their voices a cheerful cacophony. Women, adorned in vibrant colors, chatted amongst themselves, their laughter mingling with the calls of street vendors.

This, Nyx realized, was the life she had always craved – a life of freedom, of laughter, of connection. A life where she could walk amongst these people, dressed not in the finery of a caged bird, but in the simple freedom of everyday clothes. A life where she could play with the children, their carefree joy a balm to her lonely heart. A life where she could savor the sights and sounds of the world, no longer a silent observer trapped behind a window.

Mr. Brian stole a glance at her, his gaze lingering on the yearning reflected in her eyes. He then reached into his pocket and pulled out a pocket watch, its pendulum swinging hypnotically.

A satisfied smirk played on his lips. A man of punctuality, he noted with pride that they had arrived precisely on schedule. They would be home within the hour, and he had much to discuss with the head of the Caldewin family – matters far graver than simply their timely arrival.

As the carriage rolled to a halt at precisely eight o'clock, Mr. Brian offered Nyx his hand to help her down. The grand Caldewin estate gates stood before them, imposing and magnificent. Two ornately carved pillars, each topped with a majestic Caldewin lion crest, flanked the entrance. The intricate details were visible even in the fading light, hinting at the grandeur that awaited within. Nyx's breath hitched in her throat. If the gates were this awe-inspiring, what would be beyond these.

A young lady, her face alight with a welcoming smile, approached them. Her crisp green and white uniform identified her as a Caldewin maid. Mr. Brian issued a brief instruction to some waiting men regarding the luggage, and then ushered Nyx towards another carriage. This one, unlike the one they had traveled in, was an open carriage drawn by a majestic team of six white horses.

Despite the cloak of night, the Caldewin estates shimmered with an ethereal glow. An unseen source cast a warm, inviting light upon the sprawling grounds, illuminating manicured gardens, glistening fountains, and grand structures that whispered of a rich history.

The air vibrated with a subtle energy, a sense of life and activity that pulsed even at this late hour.

Nyx couldn't help but feel a tremor of excitement course through her.

The Caldewin estates, with their regal architecture, vibrant illumination, and omnipresent lion crest, exuded an aura of grandeur that rivaled any royal court. It was a far cry from the isolated silence of her former residence, and Nyx found herself overwhelmed.

Nyx followed Mr. Brian's retreating figure with a furrowed brow. His parting words, "Welcome home...the head of the house will join you in a minute," echoed in her ears, laced with an undercurrent of something more. His demeanor hinted at a deeper purpose beyond his role as a butler.

A young maid, her name tag glinting under the soft lamplight, introduced herself as Laura. A blush crept up Nyx's cheeks as she realized it was the first time she'd spoken to someone her own age in years. Laura's smile, however, was genuine and warm, a stark contrast to the cold indifference Nyx had grown accustomed to.

Laura led her down a plush hallway, the air thick with the comforting scent of polished wood and beeswax. Finally, she reached a heavy oak door adorned with a gleaming silver Caldewin lion crest. Laura pushed the door open, revealing a sight that stole Nyx's breath away.

Gone was the stifling austerity of her former bedroom. This chamber was a masterpiece of opulent comfort. Sunlight streamed through expansive windows, illuminating a space that seemed more like a grand salon than a mere sleeping quarters.

A plush four-poster bed, draped in silks the color of moonlight, sat majestically in the center of the room. Deep armchairs upholstered in velvet beckoned for relaxation, and a crackling fire danced merrily in a grand stone fireplace. Every detail, from the intricately woven tapestries adorning the walls to the crystal chandelier glittering overhead, spoke of wealth, taste, and a level of luxury Nyx had never known.

This was a far cry from the confines of her old room, a place more akin to a gilded cage than a haven. A wave of emotions washed over her – awe, trepidation, and a flicker of hope that perhaps, just perhaps, this new life held the promise of something more.

Nyx loosened the laces of her dress, letting it pool around her ankles as she prepared for bed. She ran a brush through her long, black hair, its smooth strands catching the soft glow of the bedside lamp. Just then, a knock on the door startled her. Laura entered, a hesitant look on her face.

"Forgive the intrusion, Lady Nyx," Laura stammered. "Mr. Brian asked me to inform you that the head of the house won't be able to see you tonight. He suggests you eat and get some rest."

Nyx's stomach clenched with a strange mix of disappointment and relief. A small part of her had yearned to meet this mysterious head of the household, but the prospect was also daunting.

Laura placed a covered silver platter on a nearby table. "I brought you supper, Lady Nyx."

Nyx forced a smile. "Thank you, Laura. But I don't have much of an appetite tonight."

Laura's concern was evident. "Are you sure, Lady Nyx? A long journey can be tiring."

Nyx felt a surge of gratitude for the young maid's genuine care. "I appreciate it, truly. Perhaps some tea later."

With a gentle nod, Laura took the platter away, leaving Nyx alone with her thoughts. Relief washed over her as she retrieved a hidden diary from her luggage. Tonight, she wouldn't be alone with her anxieties. With trembling fingers, she opened the diary, its blank pages a promise of new beginnings. In the flickering lamplight, she began to pour out her heart, her experiences, and the dawning hope that flickered within her.

A content smile touched her lips as she finished her last entry. Blowing out the candle and lowering the lamp, she nestled into the luxurious bed, the soft sheets a stark contrast to the cold austerity of her past. Sleep, deep and dreamless, claimed her.

Then, with a jolt, Nyx awoke. But this time, she wasn't greeted by the opulent surroundings of her new room. Instead, she found herself back in the familiar, yet suffocating, confines of her old chamber. The drab furniture, the dusty windows, the oppressive silence – it was all exactly as she remembered.

Panic clawed at her throat. How had she gotten back here? Had it all been a dream? A chilling voice, laced with dark amusement, echoed from the doorway. A shadow detached itself from the darkness, and a figure emerged.

"Welcome home, Nyx," it rasped, the voice sending a shiver down her spine. Recognition dawned on her in a horrifying instant. It was him.

Terror surged through Nyx as she bolted upright in bed. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drum against the silence of the room. It had been a dream, a terrifying nightmare, but it felt so real. In the dream, she was back in her old room, trapped, paralyzed by unseen bonds. The mysterious figure from her previous dreams had materialized, his voice dripping with malice as he loomed over her.

She gasped, scrambling to untangle herself from the sheets, the echoes of the dream clinging to her like cobwebs. Her nightgown clung to her damp skin, a testament to the cold sweat that had broken out during the nightmare. How could a dream feel so real? More importantly, how did the figure in her dream know about her past, about her room?

Taking a deep, shuddering breath, Nyx forced herself to calm down. It was just a dream, a figment of her imagination. But the chilling details lingered – the red ribbons that bound her, the glint of bloodshot eyes, the way the figure seemed to move with inhuman grace. She squeezed her eyes shut, willing the image away.

A soft rapping at the door startled her back to the present. "Lady Nyx? Are you alright?" Laura's voice, laced with concern, drifted through the door.

Nyx took another calming breath. "Yes, Laura, I'm fine. Just a bad dream." Her voice sounded shaky even to her own ears.

"Is there anything you need?" Laura persisted.

Nyx hesitated. She wasn't sure if she was ready to share the unsettling dream, not yet. "No, thank you, Laura. I just need some time to myself."

"Of course, Lady Nyx. Please don't hesitate to call if you change your mind." Laura's voice softened.

Nyx offered a weak smile. "Thank you, Laura. You're very kind."

As Laura's footsteps faded down the hallway, Nyx was left alone with the unsettling echoes of her dream. The luxurious room, once a symbol of hope, now felt strangely oppressive. The image of the mysterious figure loomed large in her mind, a dark premonition that cast a shadow over her newfound freedom. She clutched the sheets tightly, a knot of unease forming in her stomach.
