Chapter 8 - The discovery

Melvin adjusted his tie since we left his place for the one-thousandth time.

I am putting my hand on top of his. You won't have any problems at all. This is not your first time visiting my house for dinner as a guest. We used to do it every week when we were younger.

Just for a moment, he diverts his attention away from the road. Those were the days. To add insult to injury, we did not misrepresent who we are to them. This time, we are deceiving them in some way.

Alternatively, we can be deceiving ourselves.

After looking out the window, I can see the house where my parents live coming into view.

After swiftly removing my hand from Melvin's, I wiped it on my dress.

Melvin parks the car. "Are you alright?"

"I'm nervous."

It is OK. "I'm with you."

"We shouldn't be here in this state. It was my parents that found out about it.

Melvin exits the vehicle and moves over to my side. He is now standing next to me. He opens the door. "If I don't prove I'm a gentleman, I'm sure your father would want my balls, and he'd string them over the doorbell for everyone to see."

I chuckle to myself. "Thanks for making the atmosphere more upbeat. "Are you prepared to do this?"

"As much as I can be for seeing my best friend's parents after a couple of years." He wraps his arm around me and holds me. "It's time that we act."

I mutter something in his ear. "Yes, it is." I bring his face closer to mine and press my lips against his. I can't help but hug him.

He moves his tongue into my mouth as he intensifies the kiss that we are sharing.

I let out a groan as I accepted the kiss.

Melvin smirked as he moved away from me and pulled away. "Someone liked that kiss."

"Yeah," Mom shouts from the porch as she clears her throat. When are you two going to come in? Or are you planning to spend the night outside?

"Outside sounds good about now." Then I mutter.

Melvin lets out a chuckle. "I'm with you on that."

When she is on the ground, Mom taps her feet. "Hurry up; the family is waiting for you two."

I look at my finger and realize the ring is on. I am surprised by this realization.

What a sham! Before I went to take a shower, I forgot to take it off the counter.

I am the focus of Melvin's attention. "What's wrong?"

"I left my ring on the counter in the bathroom."

"No, you didn't." Taken out of his pocket, he pulls it out. "I saw it on the counter when I went to turn off the fan."

I am the one who takes it from him. "You are a lifesaver."

I give him another kiss.

"Not again." A groan escapes Mom's lips as she watches Melvin and me.

After ascending the steps, I come to a stop next to her. "Stop talking, Mom. You're even more terrible than Melvin and I. When I arrived home late at night, I discovered that you and your father were in compromising positions. I can't tell you how many times I found this.

Her cheeks become flushed. "I'm the mother and can do whatever I want."

I am crossing my arms. "I'm an adult and can do whatever I want." I kiss Melvin as I draw him closer and kiss him again.

As she enters the house, she exclaims, "Unbelievable," and then raises her hand.

I take a step back from Melvin. "I love playing around with."

"I see that hasn't changed, Kathy." He opens the door, and we proceed to enter the house.

Alan makes his way over to me. "You've arrived right on time. We see Taylor and Walden, my brothers, that is not particularly surprising.

When you speak about the devils, they will come into existence.

Taylor approaches me and lifts me. He says, "I'm OK." It is high time you presented yourself. Mom informed us that you have something to announce.

Melvin is gazed upon by Walden. "What's he doing here?"

In addition to putting me down, Taylor turns his attention to Melvin.

I hope that they won't make a scene or upset anyone.

I move away from my brother and stand next to him. I take a step away from them. "It would be best to go to the dining room, Melvin. Indeed, Mom would appreciate some assistance. He is dragged out of the room by me.

Melvin inquires about it whenever we are not with my brothers. "What's wrong with them?"

I let out a sigh. "Do you remember when I told you about being pushed down a flight of stairs?" he nodded. They were the ones who discovered me," she said. It seemed that they needed to communicate with me about something. However, they would never be able to inform me. Up until this very day, I had no idea what they wanted.

While we are walking away, Taylor and Walden are peaceful with each other.

Melvin gives him one final look before leaving. "It is suitable for you to chat with them. I'll check to see if your mother needs any help.

After saying, "OK," I put my hand on his shoulder. "Thank you."

"You're welcome." I overhear him conversing with Mom as he enters the dining room.

The moment I get close, Taylor and Walden cease their whispering. "What have you two been keeping from me?"

A hand runs over Walden's blonde hair as he speaks. "We found evidence of who could have pushed you down the stairs, and we know you won't like it."

I am crossing my arms. "How long have you been digging into this?"

As a result, you have lost the baby. If we were to abandon you without resolution, we would be unable to live with ourselves.

I am so grateful to both of you for doing this for me. So, who may have been responsible for this?

This was "Michelle," Walden says.

The manner in which she interacted with Melvin was not something I should have been startled by, but I did not believe she could do something like this. It is regrettable that he has never witnessed the negative side of that girl.

"She had a lot to lose if you were pregnant." This concludes Taylor.

"In what ways might she possibly lose everything? Melvin wasn't even the father of the child.

"Are you going to tell us who the father was?"

Now, I am looking at her brothers. "It doesn't matter."

"Dinner's ready." The mother yells.

The talk is abruptly terminated, and Walden, Taylor, and I enter the dining room.

Later on, I will have to inquire about the proof that my brothers possess. It would be wonderful if I could find out whether it was she.

I took a seat next to Mom and Melvin in the chair. In the meantime, Walden and Taylor were seated next to one another. Melvin sat on the opposite side of the room from Alan.

Mom takes a peek at everyone. "I got you all together to meet Katherine's fiancé." While she is speaking, her gaze falls on me. You have my utmost admiration. At what point in time do you plan to begin a family?

During that precise time, Melvin drank from his glass and accidentally vomited the champagne all over the table. "Excuse me?"

The look on Mom's face changes to one of a smile. One of my goals is to have a grandchild. My other children are getting older, and I'm getting older, waiting for them to give me a grandchild.

I am aware that tears are starting to form in my eyes. "Excuse me." Immediately after leaving the room, I make my way to the restroom.

When I had been in the restroom for a few minutes, I heard a knock on the door. "Come in."

Upon opening the door, Mom walks into the room. She drags me into her arms. "When?"

I have a frown. "What are you talking about?"

It is a sigh. "I beg you, Katherine, do not play dumb with me. Is it true that you are pregnant? What exactly took place with the baby?

While I am telling her everything, I am holding onto her.

Even while I cry, she is holding onto me. She makes her way through my hair with her fingertips. Hello, Kathy! I am very sorry. My only regret is that you did not inform me about it earlier than this.

"Do you remember when I disappeared for a couple of months?" She makes a nod. "I was in rehab."
