PRESENT
"Not every household can protect their deepest secrets. Not every secret is worthy to keep".
That's what Grace heard, her mother have been saying that over and over again. Though she still nine, her mothers words is something she couldn't understand.
"We have to be patient Kate, we'll find somewhere safe for Grace", Her father, Alice assured.
As Grace can remember, they have been running from who knows what and who. And now her parents are more desperate to keep her safe from what?. She can't ask but watch.
"I promise you, i'll find a better home", Alice was confident.
Kate looked at her tears rolling down her cheeks, it was never enough to protect her, nothing is enough.
"We'll ship her out of the country", She said with so much determination as she nod her head,"Let's ship her out of the country".
Alice couldn't argue but agree. Immediately they started packing Grace belongings, her parents didn't say anything to her. Or to tell her where they will be going, besides this is their fifth house for half of the month. She was already used to it.
As they left the house, her mother made calls, calls she didn't understand.
"Everything is ready", Kate informed as they entered the car,"The boat is ready"
Alice nodded starting the engine, soon they were out of their new neighbourhood. The journey was silent and the atmosphere was.....uncomfortable.
"Say what you have to say honey", Kate spoke up.
"Will you come with me?".
Despite all the questions she has, she chose this one.
"We're taking you far away from here, you'll be with someone. You'll be safe there"
"But....."
"No buts"
She kept quiet not wanting make the slightest sound.
"Kate", Alice called glancing at the side mirror, "We're being followed.
Fear flashed in her eyes. Grace could could feel it.
"Grace i need you to fasten your seat belt"
She tell who spoke, but she did it anyway. The next moment....
"BANG"
The sudden drift made her scream in fright, her hands above her ears and her body trembling in fear when another gun shot was fired.As Her dad accelerated the speed, her mom unhooked her seat belt looking back at her, her expression was calm as ever.
"We have to abandon this. Is phone with you?", Her father asked.
"No"
"BANG, BANG"
"Alice, sharp right".
A car chase with a nine year old inside the car. All she did was close her eyes and tried not to scream even if her heart was shaking.
Not knowing how many minutes or hours she did it she stayed frozen,like the world has already ended before it began.
"Grace, Grace"
Grace rose her head her eyes staring into those hazel ones like time stopped.
"Get out of the car", Kate instructed coming out. Instantly she did as she was told.
"Where are we?", She asked.
The place they are was quiet and lonely only the street light was on, it wasn't right.
"We have a few minutes", Alice informed, "Where is Dan?"
Kate was confused, "He said he'll be here"
"We don't have time for that, those d**k heads will wipe us out, we can't wait now"
"What is going on?, i don't understand. What happened to those people chasing us", She couldn't hold it,"Why are we running?"
They didn't answer.
"Mom...."
"We are keeping you safe. That all you need to know, Grace"
Immediately the sound of cars headed their way, Kate heart skipped the beat, and for the first time in years Grace saw fear in her mother's eyes.
"Run!", Alice commanded.
Grace stepped back as the ground started to shake, earthquake?.
"Grace run!!!", It was her mother this time.
She didn't think of anything as she ran, from what and then who??. The faster she ran the more she heard screams. She didn't stop until she was breathless and weak. Hiding at a small corner, she held her chest to calm her heart. The sounds still echoed.
"Gra-Grace".
She held the breath,slowly turning to the man laying on the floor soaked in blood, his breathing was loud like he was about to die in any moment.
"Grace!"
"Ah..."
"Don't.... don't scream. It-it me"
"Dan?", She moved closer, her hands trembling.
"Go.... go to the boat and.....hind"
"You're hurt"
Dan laughed painfully, knowing she won't go that easily.
"Get on the boat"
"Mom, dad they're coming. They..."
"They're dead kid", He looked at her, "They'll come after you if you don't run"
"No, i'll wait"
"Run, Grace....ru....."
His eyes stood still, and his breath....stopped. Grace moved away from him in fear as she inhealed and exhealed heavily. Her parents will come for her, right?. She looked at the boat there no one on it. And the gun shots had stopped. Has the storm cleared?.
Suddenly footsteps approached, with joy she came out. But the joy ended as a gun was aimed at her. The man in black didn't show any remorse about to pull the trigger. He said.
"You bloodline of rats, we'll kill each and everyone of you until you are no more"
Grace closed her eyes expecting a sharp and painful death, nothing came. Opening them a knife pirece through his throat from the back. She shivered when the woman behind him stepped forward. Her mother.
"Mom?"
"Never do that again"
Kate was bleeding from the side of her forehead and her white shirt soaked in blood.
"Mom, you're hurt!", She raise alarm running to her.
"Grace, you have to do something for me. You have to..."
"Find them!!!"
"None must escape!!"
Kate grabbed Grace hand even though it was covered in blood, "You have to find him, find Ala...."
"Found you. You....."
His statement couldn't finish as he neck twisted with ease. Grace gasped.
"You have to hind, they must not find you. But you have to find him"
She handed over a half heart necklace with Grace first letter, 'G'. Grace thought hard on the person her mother wanted her to find. Who is this person?.
"I'm sorry for not protecting you", She looked back, "But i'll not stop protecting you until I die"
"Mom?"
"Run Grace, to that boat and don't come out no matter the sounds you hear, don't come out till morning"
Grace trusted her mother words as she ran to the boat, hiding in one of the boxes. Kate smiled before a smirk crawled on her lips when some footsteps approached.
"Who's ready to have some fun", She asked.
"Kill her!!!"
She looked Grace way and smiled,winking. She raise her hand and a remote control blinking red, gave them warning.
"Greet the devil for me"
