Chapter 3 - Life And Death

Asher had woken up.

Everything was black as the moon fell over the horizon. The floor beneath was charcoal black. Or that's what it seemed to Asher. It felt as if time had paused entirely. He couldn't move, nor could he breathe properly.

"What... the hell?" Asher said with a trembling voice.

Even speaking felt like sucking cold air to him. Something was holding him back. Soon, an unrealistic rage filled him. His inner instincts told him to fight. Move, push.

It was at that moment the realisation came to him. Asher took a deep breath as he controlled his unrealistic fighting spirit inside him.

Something was trying to control him.

"Breathe," Asher said reluctantly. Strong winds crashed into him as if screaming out their powerless rage.

However, that was not what worried Asher. Something told him that the moment he broke through this force.

He'll die.

"Goddamnit" Asher said in exasperation. He mustered all of his strength. His hands were shaking, soaked wet.

"IS ANYONE HERE!" Asher screamed with everything he had. Each millisecond of that scream felt like aeons of pain in his vocal cords. Immediately, Asher felt his knees shaking as he felt immense pain in his vocal cords. Soon, Asher started to cough blood and had bloodshot eyes. He gritted his teeth, yet he couldn't maintain it due to the pain.

Hours passed, and the force remained. It seemed that Asher would be trapped here forever. The pain had gotten a bit better, but Asher couldn't talk properly. The force had absolutely destroyed his vocal cords.

However, before Asher started moving, he fell to the ground. A cold shiver went through his bleeding hands as a dull ache covered his forehead.

'What did just happen?' Asher thought while standing up. Soon, an intense agony cornered his mind. His hands forced him to fall back on the ground as the air suddenly got cold.

'My hands, they are bound by shackles.'

As he fell down, his surrounding view became clearer and clearer, as if the entire pitch-black view was just a facade. As the entire view came down like the curtains. Asher realised that he was...

Practically in the middle of nowhere.

Green conical trees surrounded him, and a raw path in front of him lay ahead. His threadbare tunic was covered in mud, and a horrible smell came out of it.

At the moment, Asher felt something was terribly wrong. Chills went up his spine for some reason as the cold floor beneath gave him a dull ache.

'What do I do now?' Asher thought as he looked at his shackles hopelessly.

Before Asher could think of something, several noises suddenly came from behind him. Horses are walking, shouting vaguely.

"Run!" A voice came behind, followed by a scream and at this point, Asher knew something was wrong. However, before Asher could act. A huge explosion occurred as a man immediately went flying forward.

Landing right beside Asher.

Half of the man's body was gone, and the remaining was blood and gore. Just this sight was enough to make Asher dizzy.

However, he knew. There was no time. Instantly, Asher dragged himself too close to that man's body. His eyes desperately looking at the pieces of molten rocks in front of him.

Soon, he reached the man's body and the piece of molten rock beside it. The noises became much more visibly audible. His heart rate increased as his hands moved his shackles desperately towards the molten rock.

"AH-" A muffled scream came out of Asher's mouth as his vocal cords ached horrendously. His hands were getting partially burned as the shackles melted into fumes.

With gritted teeth, he immediately stood up. Asher's heartbeat had become irregular. Instantly, he picked up the sword lying beside the corpse.

At this point, the sounds had become very audible to Asher. Meaning whatever that was.

It was close.

With rigid movement, Asher sprinted ferociously down the raw pathway. As he ran, he could vaguely hear many screaming with terror. Some were women; some were children. He knew that if he looked back, he would see a scenery that could affect him for life.

"THERE HE IS!" A deep voice came from behind as a huge ball of fire fell beside Asher. Leaving many nearby trees in flames. The smell of blood came up in the air as more screaming could be heard.

Asher knew...

This was a matter of life and death.
