Chapter 3 - Ch.3: Essence of the apocalypse

As Dave walked into the classroom, only to be immediately greeted by a familiar female voice. "So, where is Kai?" The classmate asked, noticing Dave's arrival without Kai in tow.

Dave glanced around, briefly surprised by the question. He replied, waving off her concern. "He's just on the roof, don't worry about that bastard," he said nonchalantly, taking a nonchalant sip of water before settling into his seat.

Nicole, the president of their class, let out a weary sigh. "I see. As the class president, my responsibility is to ensure everyone's safety while we're here. However, I also know how difficult it is to manage Kai. He's quite stubborn when it comes to authority," she explained, a hint of fatigue evident in her voice.

Dave chuckled in agreement, continuing to sip his water as he observed their classmates. "You tell me," he said, his tone laced with a hint of irony. He noted the strained expressions and weary gazes of the other students, a silent testament to the toll the oppressive environment was taking on their minds and spirits.

Dave let out a weary sigh, his voice reflective. "Yeah, Kai does have a point, though... Even though the soldiers are supposed to ensure our safety, there's still..." He trailed off, his thoughts lingering on the contradiction between security and freedom, the delicate balance that they were caught in.

The door burst open, and a guy barged into the room, looking exhausted and winded. His appearance took everyone's attention, a stark contrast to the usual atmosphere of the classroom.

Frederic collapsed into the nearest chair, a weary expression on his face. "Ugh... It's this is fuc**** shit," he managed to say, panting slightly.

Dave directed his question at the newcomer, concern evident in his voice. "How's the situation out there, Frederic?"

Frederic clutched the water bottle tighter, his annoyance seeping through his words. "It's... fine, I suppose. But those damn soldiers... Tch... Fulking hell." He paused, a hint of frustration in his voice. "They're a pain in the ass, to say the least."

Frederic's attention shifted as he scanned the room, realizing Kai's absence. He turned to Dave, a puzzled expression on his face. "Hey, Dave, where's Kai?" he inquired, curiosity clearly evident in his voice.

Dave replied nonchalantly, "Oh, Kai? He's just on the rooftop, per usual. I mean, that's practically his personal space up there. What else can you expect?" He capped his empty water bottle and leaned back in his chair, unperturbed by Kai's absence.

Mid-conversation, the peaceful ambiance was shattered by a deafening explosion. The building trembled, a result of the force of the blast. The air was filled with a cacophony of noise, and the sound of an ominous roar echoed from afar.

Amidst the chaos and panic, Frederic stood up, his voice firm and authoritative. "Everyone, calm down! Stay quiet until we figure out what's going on!" he commanded, his tone filled with urgency and determination.

Without wasting another moment, Frederic barked another order at the frightened students. "Stay here! I'll go check what's happening." With that, he briskly headed out of the classroom, his footsteps echoing in the tense atmosphere.

Dave, determined not to leave his friend alone, immediately followed in Frederic's footsteps. He turned to Nicole, instructing her with a sense of urgency. "Nicole, get everyone packed and ready to move. I'm going with Frederic." With that, he dashed after Frederic, his mind focused on the unknown situation unfolding outside.

Dave caught up with Frederic, and what they witnessed was a chaotic sight. Soldiers valiantly fought against the relentless onslaught of zombies, desperately trying to hold back the horde at the gate. The air was thick with desperation and the sounds of battle. "Jesus Christ..." Dave muttered, his eyes wide as he took in the scene unfolding before them.

Frederic's voice was tinged with a mix of resignation and realization. "I knew this was bound to happen," he murmured to himself, a somber tone in his words. He watched in horror as soldiers shot at the enormous zombie with the massive hand, only for it to effortlessly crush them in its powerful grasp.

Dave's eyes widened in disbelief as he took in the sight of the colossal zombie. "What the hell is that?!" he exclaimed, his voice filled with astonishment. The enormity of the creature was both awe-inspiring and terrifying.

A sense of recognition crossed Frederic's face as he spoke. "It's a mutant," he said, his left eye glowing with an unnatural golden hue. The implication of the situation weighed heavily upon him, his expression reflecting a mix of dread and understanding.

Frederic spoke resolutely, his gaze steady. "I'll go gather the others. You find Kai," he instructed. His eyes returned to their normal state, the momentary glow now extinguished.

Dave acknowledged Frederic's directive, determination etched on his face. "Alright, I'll find Kai. We'll be there soon," he assured, before setting off in a run to locate his friend.

Frederic stood there for a moment, the gravity of the situation weighing on his shoulders. He uttered softly to himself, "So, it has begun." With a resigned sigh, he turned and walked back towards the classroom, the sound of his footsteps echoing in the empty corridors.

Dave finally reached the back of the school, his heart pounding with each step. Then, he spotted Kai, standing by the back door. Relief washed over him as he called out, "Kai!"

As Dave walked toward he suddenly halted in his tracks as he saw Kai pointing a pistol at him, the sight taking him by surprise. A moment of tense silence passed between them before Dave tentatively spoke, trying to break the silence.

Dave's voice trembled with confusion and concern as he questioned Kai's actions. "What are you doing, Kai? Why are you pointing that gun at me?" Dave's confusion only deepened as he caught sight of Kai's cold gaze, those crimson red eyes devoid of any warmth.

There was no hesitation as Kai ordered, "Duck!" The sound of the pistol shot rang out, and Dave reflexively ducked as instructed. Kai had swiftly aimed and fired, neutralizing the zombie that had been lurking behind Dave.

Dave glanced behind him, his eyes fixed on the fallen zombie. He then turned his gaze to Kai, who outstretched his hand, gesturing for Dave to stand up. Dave reached out, taking the offered hand, and rose to his feet, still startled by Kai's actions.

Dave clutched his heart, the adrenaline rush still coursing through him. "You scared the crap out of me just now," he admitted, trying to steady his breathing. Dave observed Kai's serious expression, the gravity in his eyes.

Kai spoke, his face serious, and posed a question to Dave, "Dave, I need to ask you something." The air was tense as Dave met Kai's gaze, bracing himself for whatever was coming.

Kai fixed Dave with an unwavering gaze, his voice resolute as he extended his hand and posed his proposal. "Dave, do you accept my proposition? Are you ready to embark on a journey together, to explore the world and witness it in all its raw, unfiltered essence?" Kai's intense look seemed to convey the weight of the decision Dave was about to make.

Dave was silent for a moment, grappling with the significance of Kai's proposition. The implications of what it meant to embark on such a journey weighed heavily on his mind, the gravity of the situation slowly sinking in. "This is…" He began to speak, but the weight of the decision held his words back for a few seconds longer.

Dave's mind whirled with thoughts, the implications of his decision loomed before him. After a moment of contemplation, he raised his hand, meeting Kai's gaze with a look of determination.

"Kai... My answer is..." Dave's voice broke the silence, his tone firm and resolute.
