Chereads / The isekai journey of the strays / Chapter 29 - First day of the conference

Chapter 29 - First day of the conference

The world we are isekai'd into allows the natives to use us as slaves; it turns out to be more complex than I initially thought. The Mikhland I know is merely the tip of the iceberg, obscured by a facade of a dilapidated federation that relies on exploiting slaves to maintain and develop its economy.

The final meeting is underway. Hitler—yes, you heard correctly—this is indeed Hitler in the flesh, one of history's most notorious antagonists, dressed in the uniform of Nazi German's Party, speaking before hundreds of nobility in this medieval fantasy world known as Terre. Zihao mumbles something about a project in which the Mikhland nobility employs the undamaged technology of the Metaller to recreate the physical forms of over 25,000 historical figures—primarily from the period between 1000 and 1950—ranging from politicians, scientists, poets, composers, singers, and others from Earth, granting them immortality and integrating them into the political and cultural systems of Mikhland. As for the native Earth slaves of a youthful age, as I once was, they represent merely a cog in the machine of restoration.

"The aftermath of the global revolution against the Federation 200 years ago still significantly affects Mikhland even to this day, 120 years later. This dilapidated federation remains engulfed in crisis. Heilop I, the grandfather of the current count Heilop, implemented a policy of summoning and exploiting youth from Earth. Despite some initial successes and proposals for application on a federal scale..."

Zihao pauses, gazing into my eyes before continuing. "This incites instability as slaves continuously revolt. The regular Guard forces, Cazador—then merely a mobile unit using limited cavalry and magic—and Thaumatica, with fewer than 5,000 personnel, prove ineffective against organized revolts led by youthful individuals characterized by courage, decisiveness, boldness, and a cool head." I continue to listen to Zihao instead of the opening remarks of Hitler...

"Up to 100 years ago, a comprehensive reform plan that includes agricultural, industrial initiatives, and the application of magic is proposed and enacted. However, these plans ultimately fail due to limited state centralization..." Zihao slightly leans back, quietly observing Hitler, his eyes reflecting a hint of surprise.

Veritas, in formal attire, leads a woman with long, shiny blonde hair, blue eyes reminiscent of the ocean, fair skin with rosy undertones, like any girl in her twenties, in a dress. The two hurry to sit beside us. Zihao remains unresponsive to both, as if he has anticipated this moment. He continues, "In the past 100 to 80 years, 25,000 historical figures from various cultures and eras have been summoned through a complex technique that involves the use of organic material technology from the Metaller—one of the four tribes of the Federation that has now become extinct—along with the magic of soul tethering from Earth to this location and binding them to new bodies. Initially, they are utilized as instruments of control and centralization of the state. However, they overwhelmingly revolt and, predictably, are brutally exterminated, leaving only about 1,000 survivors, with the actual number likely lower… that was the phase 80 years ago…" Zihao exhales deeply, observing Hitler as he employs various gestures and expressions to guide today's meeting. No one knows what he says or understands; they merely witness a phenomenon…

"The candidates from Earth proposed include Stalin, Hitler, Churchill, Roosevelt, and Hirohito. Ultimately, Hitler is selected for his centralized and toxic policies, persuasive ability, and ideology that aligns with Mikhland's conditions. Others, such as Stalin, are deemed unsuitable due to their extreme communism; Churchill is unfit due to his poor performance as a peacetime leader; Roosevelt is rejected for being too democratic; and Hirohito—well, they do not need another king…" Zihao smirks slightly and continues to review the stack of documents, explaining them to us.

"And when Hitler is appointed, he enacts policies similar to the Autobahn, including Neo-Algri (intensification and establishment of areas for growing a specific type of grain, industrial crops, or fruits), Autobahn II (a system of stone roads and transportation gates), divided into four-year plans, continuing the initial policies of Heilop I in a more systematic manner along with changes and developments in Cazador and Thaumatica, alongside two new forces, Executioner and Crusader (primarily a religious faction similar to Orthodox Catholicism but with more differentiation from Judaism), intensifying the application of magic in production and daily life, monopolizing, and striving to decipher the technology of the military machinery and remnants of the Metaller (although it is currently unsuccessful). Other plans include education for the youth, preserving traditional values, and concentrating power, which are also implemented. The youth slaves summoned from Earth also face severe exploitation and are more organized..."

"The rest is history..." Zihao smiles.

Finally, after 30 minutes, Hitler concludes:

"Esteemed members of the conference,

As we conclude this inaugural session, I respectfully request the presence of foreign politicians, nobility, council members, and those of the non-landed aristocracy of Class C or higher to remain for discussions regarding pressing issues and our proposed solutions.

I also extend my best wishes to the wives, children of the nobility, the non-landed aristocrats of Class D, and their entourages, who may leave to avoid disturbance during this discussion.

Rest assured that all parties are welcome to participate in upcoming meetings and conferences, which will take place over the next seven days. While we remain in session until today's conclusion, I encourage you to take this opportunity to explore the city of Tarif, where many intriguing experiences await.

Thank you for your attention and cooperation."

Applause erupts, and I, Veritas, and the woman beside him leave.

"I will bring back the most important information for us tonight…" Zihao calls out to me…

We walk into the double-occupancy room at the hotel that Veritas has paid for a week's stay. This hotel room draws inspiration from traditional Arabic and Islamic architectural styles, showcasing a luxurious and culturally rich design. The most striking feature is the use of intricate horseshoe arches, a hallmark of Islamic architecture, which surround both the walls and windows, imparting a sense of grandeur to the room. These arches, combined with repetitive geometric patterns inspired by Moorish style on the wall behind the bed, add depth and authenticity to the space. The high ceilings and arches enhance the airy and open feeling, allowing the room to feel spacious yet cozy.

The dominant color palette comprises warm and inviting tones, with earthy shades like beige, gold, and cream prevailing throughout the space. These soft hues, paired with gentle lighting, create a serene atmosphere. The gold accent details on the wall behind the bed elevate the opulence, while the neutral tones maintain a sense of relaxation and balance. The meticulously crafted design focuses on luxury without overwhelming the senses.

The room's furnishings harmonize with the traditional aesthetic, featuring classic wooden pieces. The bed, positioned centrally, is adorned with soft bedding in gentle neutral tones. An elegant upholstered bench sits at the foot of the bed, adding to the room's sophistication. A small seating area near the window provides additional comfort, with wooden chairs and a table that complement the room's theme. The wooden details contribute to the warmth of the space, enhancing its inviting atmosphere.

The enchanting lighting system plays a crucial role in the room's design, with an exquisite brass chandelier hanging from the ceiling, offering a sense of luxury and grandeur. These intricately designed lanterns emit soft light, spreading a warm glow that enhances the tranquil and peaceful ambiance of the room. The wall behind the bed features lace-like carved patterns, serving as a focal point that adds depth and texture to the room's aesthetics. The large window is adorned with thick, luxurious drapes, allowing natural light to flood in, illuminating the space and creating a harmonious balance between light and shadow.

Textiles such as the large patterned rug in earthy tones provide comfort and visual appeal. The heavy drapes, made from high-quality fabric, contrast beautifully with the light-colored walls and contribute to the room's luxurious feel. Additionally, strategically placed potted plants throughout the room introduce a refreshing natural element, softening the overall space and adding vibrancy.

Veritas happily sinks into the plush mattress. "I remember this feeling. It's just like being in my beloved home," he says with a satisfied smile. The woman beside him sits shyly at the corner of the bed. "So you still remember home, family, friends, and even teachers, right?" I lie down on the adjacent bed, asking Veritas with a voice tinged with deep sadness. "Huh?" Veritas opens his eyes wide, turns to look at me, then his expression falters, and he nods slightly, his face furrowed.

"If it weren't for the summoning to this harsh world, I would have been studying in physics class at the provincial gifted highschool, and you would likely be a student in an advanced class at the best school in our district…" Veritas replies with a tone of nostalgia and sadness. "I know," I respond, keeping my expression calm. "I just fear that when we return to Earth, our parents may no longer be alive, friends will be caught up in their own lives, our homeland will have changed, and we will find ourselves lost and uncertain about reintegrating into the world we were born into… once again," Veritas expresses, his voice revealing clear sadness, regret, and a hint of fear.

The woman beside him shows some empathy. "It has been more than half a year since we were summoned here—specifically, eight months—and the first six months were spent as slaves…" I say, "We are temporarily safe now, but we must hurry; if it exceeds twenty years…" I suddenly pause, exhale deeply, and a tear wells in my eye. "Surely staying here…" Veritas states resolutely. "After all, there is no other way…" I nod in agreement, the woman beside him appearing surprised.

"And the future will depend on our present selves. For now, let's set aside these emotions so we can focus on finding the quickest way back. As long as the opportunity remains above zero percent, there is still hope…" Veritas winks, contemplating for a moment, and smiles. I nod in agreement.

Suddenly, Veritas sits up, his face turning serious. "Alright!" he says enthusiastically, "Let's strive to achieve this goal. First and foremost, let's maintain our spirits. Let's get straight to the point, Minh." For the first time in a while, Veritas calls me by my real name, causing me to feel slightly taken aback, though my face remains composed.

"I also have some news. But you go ahead first," I say. "Demon Slaughter, Helzard, Auburn, Fermos, and Neva have arrived in the city of Al-miraj, and they are expected to be here tomorrow," Veritas replies, "And there's some bad news," his tone deepens.

I ask cautiously, "What has happened?" Veritas points to the woman, "Do you know who this is?" "No, but she resembles Kyle's younger sister. But how is this related to the bad news?" "It is indeed related. This is Kyle." The woman suddenly flushes.

"Kyle?" I tilt my head slightly, "But clearly in front of me, this is a female, while Kyle is male and has a completely different physique." I look closely at the woman, examining all the details. "Well, I'm not joking. Kyle's factory, along with Matthias and Lukas, was attacked by Bone Collector—who is suspected to be an enemy unrelated to Sapphic, of course, and a bunch of machinery was destroyed. However, I have retained the original design as well as the remaining enzymes and sold a significant portion," Veritas presents a container with bottles of liquid or powder—the enzyme products we have. "However, there is still one last batch; you remember to take it to a bakery right in this city and inform them." I nod.

"That's all that has transpired." I nod again. "This loss will cause our primary source of income to vanish…" Veritas sighs.

"That's alright; you still have income from the laborers—more like employees—working for the estates and settlements in some surrounding territories. I still have earnings from the extraction of mud coal, phosphor, sulfur, and profits from the completed tasks by the mercenary groups," I reply calmly as usual.

"I know that you have a variety of income sources. However, this still constitutes 48% of my income, 67% of your income, and 90% of Fermos's income, as well as 25% of the entire alliance's income," Veritas frowns. "You should seek new sources of income. The time required to create a new machinery system will take 120 days and quite a few resources..."

"Ah, I understand. I have also prepared a plan," I reassure him.

"Oh, really? Then let me know what those plans are," he replies.

"I have just invested in the Spice Merchants' Guild in Al-miraj and the Parthia clan—a foreign clan with a horse transport industry, namely the Centaurs. Their stock value increases steadily and maintains a high average growth rate..." I respond.

"Is that all?" Veritas raises an eyebrow.

"That is all!" I reply. "Currently, it is the time for a conference, and security is tightened; an additional 2000 people like us have been caught and executed already. I cannot act recklessly," I explain.

"That explains it… The guards have intensified ID checks..." Veritas looks out the window, gazing at the bustling cityscape.

"Well, I am going to take a shower," he states casually, grabbing a white towel and stepping into another room.

Kyle and I exchange glances for a moment before shrugging. I grab the package and prepare to head out.

"Wait!" Kyle, sitting in the corner of the bed, shouts.

I turn back to Kyle, "I intend to make the delivery right now. Do you need anything?"

"I want to go with you to explore the city and search for materials," Kyle responds.

"Alright, Kyle" (You can now call me Helene, as we have agreed upon this for security reasons), "I understand..."

Well, perhaps that is a good idea; maybe I should explore the city a bit, as I do not believe Zihao can return tonight.

The two of us take a few steps until we reach that bakery; it is named "Choi Bakery and Café."

Upon entering this café and pastry shop, the first impression that customers receive is the perfect blend of medieval French architecture and Islamic Golden Age style. The total area of 200 square meters is divided into two floors, creating a cozy and friendly atmosphere.

One cannot help but notice the large arched wooden door on the ground floor, intricately carved with delicate floral patterns. The dark brown wooden door stands out against the intricately carved stone frame, evoking a sense of antiquity and formality from the very first step inside. As the door opens, natural light floods in from the tall, arched windows, with vibrant stained glass reminiscent of medieval churches. This light creates a warm ambiance, as if enveloped in classical beauty.

The mosaic stone floor, adorned with complex geometric patterns, further enhances the elegance of the space. Along both sides are box-like stone seating arrangements designed for 2 to 4 people. The deep green and burgundy velvet cushions not only provide comfort but also create a sense of privacy. The walls inside these boxes are decorated with blue and yellow glazed tiles, making the space more lively and appealing.

At the end of the ground floor, there is a crescent-shaped coffee and pastry counter made of polished stone with intricate carvings reflecting Islamic influences. The large display case showcases delectable pastries that catch the customers' eyes at first glance. Behind the counter, the coffee-making area is equipped with a shiny brass coffee machine, adding a sense of warmth and intimacy.

To access the second floor, customers ascend a winding stone staircase, designed narrow with dark wooden handrails. Small lanterns hang along the staircase, casting a soft glow that creates a mysterious and inviting atmosphere. The second floor features a relaxation area with larger stone boxes accommodating 4 to 6 people.

The ceiling of each box is lower, providing a more intimate feel. The seating here is adorned with embroidered velvet cushions, blending shades of emerald green and blue, creating an air of elegance while still being approachable. In one corner of the second floor, there is a classic stone fireplace, creating a warm environment where customers can sip coffee and read books.

The smaller windows with Islamic lattice patterns allow gentle light to filter into the space, creating a serene atmosphere. Beneath each window are comfortable seating areas where customers can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere outside.

Notably, the café is constructed using environmentally friendly materials, such as recycled stone bricks and sustainably sourced wood. The walls and ceilings are insulated, helping maintain a pleasant temperature year-round. Additionally, fire-resistant plants like aloe vera and stone cacti are strategically placed throughout, ensuring safety while enhancing the green aesthetic of the space.

This café and pastry shop is not just a place to enjoy food; it is a unique architectural experience where art and nature intersect. With its warm and refined ambiance, the café promises to provide each customer with wonderful moments of relaxation and unforgettable experiences.

I catch a glimpse of a Flavus woman with almond skin wearing the typical uniform seen in pastry shops. I approach her and hand her a package.

"This is the ammonium carbonate salt, a leavening agent produced by combining carbon dioxide and ammonia solution. I cannot disclose further details on the process due to business matters. And here is the enzyme Amylase. This will be the final batch of enzymes..." I say.

The woman smiles brightly as she accepts the package.

"Thank you for the early delivery. You must be quite tired, right..."

"No, miss, I have only walked less than 20 meters."

"If you would like, you can choose and enjoy some pastries from our shop. I assure you will like them..."

I nod. As I bend down to look, I am instantly captivated by the magical display case, where pastries and fruit tarts are neatly arranged, shimmering under the warm golden light. I sense the allure and elegance in every pastry, from the colors to the shapes.

As I stand before the display case, the pastries are not just food but also works of art. They appear in a spectrum of colors and shapes, from golden Vietnamese baguettes to Kardinalschnitten with its smooth white cream. I sense the meticulous care the baker has dedicated to each pastry, with every item holding its own story—a journey from flour to the hands of the taster.

I choose two servings of Banh Mi with a crunchy crust, filled with fresh ingredients such as grilled meat, cucumber, herbs, and special sauce. Each bite feels like a symphony of flavors, blending sweetness, saltiness, sourness, and spiciness. **Kardinalschnitten**, with its light sponge cake combined with rich whipped cream, offers a completely different experience, presenting purity and lightness akin to a refreshing breeze on a hot summer day.

As I step out of the shop, my gaze meets a man standing nearby, dressed in similar attire. He possesses a powerful charm, exuding confidence and sharpness. His pale skin enhances an aura that is both mysterious and captivating. His short black hair, meticulously styled, reflects a careful attention to detail. His deep black eyes sparkle with intelligence and calculation, making me feel as though he can read the thoughts of others. His oval face, intricately chiseled, boasts sharp and clear features, rendering him a vibrant figure amidst the bustling crowd.

His physique is moderately muscular, not overly strong but certainly not weak. He seems to dedicate time to sports; I envision him playing soccer in the sunlight or swimming in refreshing waters, with each movement being vigorous and decisive. All these attributes create an overall impression that is both alluring and powerful, making it impossible for me to look away.

When our eyes meet, time appears to stand still. A silent moment in a bustling space where the sounds of the city and the hurried crowds suddenly fade into the background. I sense an inexplicable connection, a feeling that is both familiar and strange. I do not know who he is, but something in his gaze makes me feel as though we have met somewhere before, in a dream or a distant memory.

He does not smile, yet his eyes seem to harbor a sea of emotions, ranging from confidence to a restlessness I cannot fully comprehend. I feel confused, unsure whether to continue walking or to pause and explore more about this enigmatic man. Nonetheless, I recognize that this moment leaves me with an intense feeling, like an unforgettable heartbeat, a powerful urge to learn more about the man standing before me.

Leaving the bakery, I walk through the quietude of the city, two servings of Banh Mi and a serving of Kardinalschnitten in hand, yet my mind remains occupied with the image of that man. He leaves an imprint on my soul, a melodious tune resonating in my head, compelling me to continue pondering his deep gaze and confident demeanor. Despite the reality being filled with worries, the memory of our exchanged glances reverberates within me like a gentle symphony, making me feel that this life still holds many wonders waiting ahead.
