Chapter 22 - Meeting the man who knew.

The tension in the room was palpable as Riei finished her report.

Ryan stood by the window, his crimson eyes reflecting the city lights below.

The weight of responsibility settled on his shoulders, a new and not entirely unwelcome feeling.

"So,"

He turned to face Riei and Migi, "the Obsidian Wraith has begun targeting smaller spirit enclaves, forcing them into submission or driving them out entirely."

Riei nodded, her serpentine lower half coiling anxiously. "Yes, Spirit King. They're systematically expanding their territory, and my sources indicate they're planning to move against larger factions soon."

Migi, who had been uncharacteristically quiet, spoke up. "Darling, this could be an opportunity. If we rally the other factions..."

Ryan held up a hand, a small smile playing on his lips. "I appreciate the thought, Migi, but let's not rush into all-out war just yet."

He moved closer to her, gently stroking one of her tails.

The gesture seemed to calm them both. "We need more information."

Riei watched this interaction with a mixture of curiosity and something that might have been envy. "What do you propose, Spirit King?".

Ryan turned his attention to Riei, his expression softening as he noticed her concern.

He approached her, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

"First, I need you to reach out to your contacts. Find out which enclaves have been targeted and which ones the Wraith might move against next."

As he spoke, Ryan felt a surge of protectiveness towards both Riei and Migi.

It wasn't just about power or politics anymore; these spirits were becoming important to him on a personal level.

Riei's golden eyes widened slightly at his touch, a faint blush coloring her cheeks. "Of course, I'll get right on it."

"Thank you, Riei," Ryan said softly. "And please, be careful. We don't know how far the Wraith's influence has spread."

As Riei slithered out of the room, Migi approached Ryan, a playful glint in her eyes. "My, my, darling. You're becoming quite the leader."

Ryan chuckled, pulling Migi close. "I'm just making it up as I go along, to be honest."

Migi nuzzled against him, her multiple tails wrapping around them both. "That's not true, and you know it. You're growing into your role as Spirit King. I can feel it in your aura."

As if to emphasise her point, Ryan's red aura flared briefly, intertwining with Migi's blue one.

The resulting purple glow bathed the room in a warm, comforting light.

"It's still overwhelming sometimes," Ryan admitted, his voice low. "The power, the responsibility... and these feelings I'm developing for you and Riei."

Migi looked up at him, her golden eyes filled with affection. "That's part of being the Spirit King, darling. Your heart has the capacity to love and protect many. It's what makes you unique."

Ryan leaned down, pressing his forehead against Migi's. "What would I do without you?"

"Let's hope you never have to find out," Migi purred.

Their moment was interrupted by a subtle shift in the air.

Ryan tensed, his senses suddenly on high alert.

"And so, they arrived." he uttered, scanning the room.

Migi nodded, her playful demeanor replaced by focused concentration.

"Yes. It's faint, but... there's another presence here. Something small, almost unnoticeable."

Ryan closed his eyes, reaching out with his spirit sense.

He could feel it now - tiny pinpricks of foreign energy scattered throughout the room.

His eyes snapped open.

"We've been watched," he said grimly. "There are spirit insects all over the place. Spy devices."

Migi hissed softly. "The Wraith. They must have infiltrated while we were distracted."

Ryan's mind raced, thinking of Riei and the other spirits under his protection.

His aura flared again, this time with a mix of anger and determination.

"Migi," he said, his voice calm but filled with resolve, "I think it's time we sent the Obsidian Wraith a message. No one threatens our home."

As Migi nodded in agreement, Ryan felt a new emotion resonating within him - a fierce, protective love for this underground city and its inhabitants.

The Spirit King was ready to make his stand.

In the depths of the Obsidian Wraith's stronghold, Chung sat in his chamber, a perpetual frost clinging to the corners of the room.

The ice spirit contractor's piercing blue eyes reflected the dancing flames of the hearth, the only source of warmth in the otherwise frigid space.

A soft knock echoed through the room.

"Enter," Chung commanded, his voice as cold as the air around him.

The door creaked open, and Jun slipped inside, her lithe form barely disturbing the shadows.

She knelt before Chung, head bowed in deference.

"Report," Chung said simply, his gaze never leaving the fire.

Jun's voice was barely above a whisper, yet it carried clearly in the silent room.

"My lord, I've successfully infiltrated Riei's residence. The insect spies are in place, gathering information as we speak."

A ghost of a smile played on Chung's lips.

"And what have you learned, my little shadow?"

Jun hesitated, an unusual occurrence that finally drew Chung's full attention.

He turned to face her, one eyebrow raised in silent question.

"My lord," Jun began, her voice trembling slightly, "the rumors are true. The Spirit King... he's there."

The temperature in the room plummeted, frost creeping across the floor from where Chung sat.

"Interesting," he mused, his tone belying the intensity in his eyes. "And what is your assessment of this... Spirit King?"

Jun's cheeks colored slightly, a detail not lost on Chung. "He's powerful, my lord. More than we anticipated. His aura... it's unlike anything I've ever seen."

Chung leaned forward, his interest piqued. "Describe it."

"Deep red, my lord. Pulsing with energy. And when it interacted with the fox spirit's aura..." Jun's eyes glazed over slightly at the memory. "It was... beautiful."

Chung's eyes narrowed, a flicker of something dangerous passing through them.

Before he could respond, another knock interrupted them.

"What is it?" Chung snapped, his irritation palpable.

A burly spirit entered, his form rippling with barely contained shadow energy. "Lord Chung, we bring good news. The eastern territory has fallen. All that remains is Riei's household."

A cold smile spread across Chung's face.

"Excellent. It seems the board is set for our final move." He stood, ice cracking beneath his feet. "Prepare the forces. We move on Riei's stronghold... tonight."

As his followers scrambled to obey, Chung turned back to Jun, who remained kneeling. "Rise, my shadow. You've done well."

Jun stood, her eyes meeting Chung's for a brief moment before darting away. "Thank you, my lord."

Chung approached her, his cold aura washing over her like a winter storm. "Tell me, Jun," he said softly, dangerously, "this Spirit King... does he intrigue you?"

Jun's breath caught in her throat. "I... I only observe, my lord. For the good of the Wraith."

Chung's laugh was like icicles shattering. "Of course, my dear. Of course." He turned away, dismissing her with a wave.

"Prepare yourself. I want you by my side when we face this... Spirit King."

As Jun left the room, Chung returned his gaze to the fire.

Its warmth seemed to mock him, a reminder of the power he sought to overcome.

The Spirit King's red aura, as described by Jun, burned in his mind's eye.

"Soon," Chung whispered to the empty room, frost spreading from his fingertips across the armrests of his chair.

"Soon, we'll see if this Spirit King is truly worthy of his title."

Outside, the forces of the Obsidian Wraith gathered, a sea of shadows and malevolent spirits preparing for the assault.

The underground city held its breath, unaware of the storm about to break upon it.

And at the center of it all, in Riei's household, Ryan Hanley stood unaware, on the precipice of a battle that would define his role as the Spirit King.

The stage was set.

The players were moving into position.

And the fate of the underground city hung in the balance.
