Chapter 21 - The power you hold

As the night deepened, Ryan found himself unable to sleep.

The events of the day - his training with Migi, the conversation with Riei, and the strange energy he'd sensed earlier - kept his mind racing.

He stood by the window of his room, gazing out at the underground city's myriad lights.

A soft knock at the door interrupted his thoughts. "Come in," he called, already knowing who it was.

Migi slipped into the room, her golden eyes gleaming in the low light. "Troubled thoughts, darling?"

Ryan turned to face her, a wry smile on his lips. "Just trying to make sense of all this... power." He held up his hand, watching as a faint red aura flickered around it. "It's like nothing I've ever experienced before."

Migi approached him, her tails swishing gently behind her. "That's because you're not just any contractor, Ryan. You're special."

"So everyone keeps telling me," Ryan muttered. "Spirit King this, Spirit King that. But what does it actually mean? Before all these, I could barely even manifest an aura".

Migi's expression grew serious. "It means, darling, that you have the potential to surpass every level of spirit contractor known to us."

She gestured to his aura. "That red? It's a sign of immense power. Most contractors would kill to have an aura that color."

Ryan's brow furrowed. "Colors have meaning? I mean…"

"Oh yes," Migi nodded. "It's one way to gauge a contractor's level and potential. Novices usually start with a green aura, progressing through various colors as they advance." She paused, her eyes studying him intently. "But you... you started with red. It's unprecedented."

Ryan absorbed this information, his mind racing. "And the spirits I can contract with? Is there a limit?"

Migi's laugh was soft and melodious. "For normal contractors, yes. Most can only bond with one, maybe two spirits in their lifetime. But you, my darling Spirit King..." She reached out, tracing a finger along his jaw. "You have the potential to harmonize with many. Each of us brings out a different aspect of your power."

As if to demonstrate, Migi let her own aura flare.

It was a deep, mesmerizing blue that seemed to dance around her form.

When it touched Ryan's red aura, the colors swirled together, creating a beautiful purple where they met.

"You see?" Migi whispered, her voice filled with wonder.

"Together, we create something entirely new. And that's just the beginning."

Ryan stared at the intermingling auras, feeling a surge of energy course through him.

It was exhilarating and terrifying all at once. "How do I control it? How do I... grow?"

Migi's smile was both proud and mysterious. "Emotional cultivation, darling. Each spirit resonates with specific emotions. To truly master your power, you must understand and embrace these emotions." She leaned in close, her breath warm against his ear. "And lucky for you, you have some very willing teachers."

As Ryan processed this information, he couldn't shake the feeling that he'd only scratched the surface of his potential.

The path ahead was unclear, but one thing was certain - his journey as the Spirit King was just beginning.

As the purple aura faded, Ryan felt a sudden surge of energy coursing through his body. He gasped, stumbling back a step.

"Easy, darling," Migi murmured, steadying him with a gentle touch. "What you're feeling is the resonance between our spirits. It's powerful, isn't it?"

Ryan nodded, trying to catch his breath. "It's... intense. Like I could tear down the walls of this city with a thought."

Migi's eyes gleamed with pride. "That's because you probably could, if you wanted to. But power without control is dangerous, even for a Spirit King."

As if to emphasize her point, the air around Ryan began to crackle with energy.

Small objects in the room - books, ornaments, even the lighter furniture - started to levitate.

"Focus, darling," Migi instructed, her voice calm but firm. "Remember what we practiced. You are the ocean, not the wave."

Ryan closed his eyes, concentrating on his breathing.

Slowly, the objects settled back into their places, and the crackling energy subsided.

"Well done," Migi praised. "You're learning quickly. Most contractors take years to achieve this level of control."

Ryan opened his eyes, a hint of frustration in his voice. "But I still don't understand half of what I'm doing. You mentioned emotional cultivation. What exactly does that mean?"

Migi settled herself on a nearby chaise lounge, patting the space beside her. As Ryan sat, she began to explain.

"Every spirit is tied to certain core emotions," she said. "For example, I am a fox spirit, associated with curiosity, mischief, and desire. To truly master my power, you need to understand and embrace these emotions."

Ryan raised an eyebrow. "Sounds... intimate. Considering I remember you to be a dragon".

Migi's laugh was like tinkling bells. "Oh things change, it is, darling. Very intimate indeed. But that's just the beginning. As you connect with more spirits, you'll need to navigate a complex web of emotions. It's not just about feeling them, but understanding how they interplay, how they can be balanced or amplified."

She leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. "And that's where you're special, Ryan. Normal contractors can only handle one, maybe two emotional resonances. But you, as the Spirit King, have the potential to harmonize them all."

Ryan's mind raced with the implications. "Is that why I can form contracts with multiple spirits? Because I can handle their different emotional resonances?"

Migi nodded, her tails swishing with excitement. "Exactly. But it's more than just handling them. You can blend them, create new harmonies that have never existed before. It's what makes you so powerful... and so dangerous."

As if on cue, Ryan felt a sudden shift in the energy around him. The air seemed to thicken, and he could sense... something approaching.

Migi tensed, her ears perking up. "You feel it too, don't you? Someone's coming. Someone powerful."

Ryan stood, his crimson eyes scanning the room. "Friend or foe?"

Before Migi could answer, the door burst open. Riei slithered in, her usual calm demeanor replaced by urgent concern.

"Spirit King," she said, her golden eyes locking with Ryan's. "We have a situation. The Obsidian Wraith... they've made their move."

Ryan's aura flared in response to the tension in the room, a deep red that pulsed with barely contained power. "Tell me everything," he commanded, his voice carrying an authority that surprised even him.

As Riei began to explain, Ryan could feel the different emotional resonances from both Migi and Riei swirling around him.

Curiosity and desire from Migi, caution and determination from Riei. And underneath it all, his own emotions - excitement, apprehension, and a growing sense of responsibility.

He realized that this was what it meant to be the Spirit King.

Not just power, but the ability to understand and balance the complex tapestry of spirit emotions.

As he listened to Riei's report, Ryan began to formulate a plan, drawing on the unique strengths of each spirit he was connected to.

The Obsidian Wraith might have made their move, but they were about to learn why challenging the Spirit King was a dangerous gambit indeed.
