Chapter 10 - The Under City.

The cobblestone streets of Old Town echoed with the coordinated footsteps of the Ethereal Sentinels, their sleek armor a stark contrast to the quaint surroundings.

Captain Vex, leader of the pursuit squad, kept his eyes locked on the energy reader built into his helmet's display.

"The signal is strong," he reported to his team of twenty. "The black-haired boy is definitely the Spirit King's vessel. Capture is our primary objective… do not kill".

As they rounded a corner, they caught sight of their targets - a young man with long messy black hair and a red-haired woman.

The boy turned, a mischievous glint in his eye that made Vex's skin crawl.

"Enclose and subdue!" Vex ordered, raising his energy lance.

Ryan's hands began to glow with a faint blue light.

Suddenly, the ground beneath the Sentinels' feet turned to ice, causing several to lose their footing.

Without a word, he grabbed Migi's hand and they took off running. This time taking the lead with a grin

Vex gritted his teeth, activating his armor's heating system to melt the ice. "Don't let them escape!"

The chase led them through winding alleys and bustling marketplaces.

Ryan's movements became increasingly fluid, each gesture unleashing a new elemental assault on their pursuers.

A wave of his hand sent a gust of wind that knocked over market stalls, creating obstacles for the Sentinels.

A stomp of his foot caused the earth to tremor, further disorienting their attackers.

Despite Ryan's efforts, the sheer number of Sentinels was overwhelming.

For every two he managed to incapacitate, three more seemed to take their place.

Migi ran alongside Ryan, her mind racing. 'This is impossible,' she thought.

'His powers shouldn't be manifesting this quickly. And how did the Ethereal Sentinels find us? Our concealment should have been perfect unless...' A chilling thought occurred to her, but she pushed it aside for now.

The chase led them to a dead-end alley.

As Ryan turned to face their pursuers, the air around him began to shimmer with heat.

Vex and his remaining team of fifteen Sentinels formed a semi-circle at the alley's entrance, their energy lances pointed at the cornered duo.

"Surrender now," Vex called out. "You're outnumbered and outgunned. We just want to talk".

"Quite the back up, for just a conversation, don't you think?" Ryan replied with a smirk.

"You don't have to worry. This is only Incase your spirit side decides to act. But it would seem you also have the same issue." Vex replied through his helmet.

"Pardon.. she's just a bit shy… I mean, we don't even know who you are".

"Again, you don't have to worry about that".

Ryan's eyes gleamed with excitement, seemingly unfazed by their predicament.

Without warning, he thrust both hands forward, and a wall of flames erupted between them and the Sentinels.

The Sentinels unleashed a barrage of energy blasts, slowly pushing through the fiery barrier.

Ryan's brow furrowed in concentration as he struggled to maintain the wall of flames against their assault.

'Hmm, am I pushing myself too hard?' He thought to himself.

Migi watched, concern hitched on her face.

'He's pushing himself too hard,' she thought. 'This level of power... it's too much, too soon.'

As the flames began to flicker and die, Ryan suddenly dropped his hands, sweat beading on his forehead.

The fire disappeared, revealing the Sentinels advancing cautiously.

But before they could act, Ryan slammed his palm against the ground.

The earth beneath the Sentinels' feet suddenly liquefied, trapping them up to their knees in quickly hardening stone.

"Well, that was invigorating," Ryan said, turning to Migi with a wild grin. "Though I have to admit, I'm not entirely sure how I did all that."

Migi grabbed Ryan's arm, hearing the sound of approaching sirens. "Darling, we need to go now. There will be time for explanations later."

As they slipped away into the shadowy alleyways of Old Town, Captain Vex struggled to free himself from the earthen trap.

He tapped his communication device.

"Central Command, this is Captain Vex. Confirm target identity. The Spirit King's vessel has awakened, and he's far more powerful than we anticipated. Requesting immediate backup and containment protocols."

The winding alleys of Old Town gradually gave way to wider streets as Ryan and Migi continued their flight from the Ethereal Sentinels.

The sound of pursuit grew closer once more, the brief respite they'd gained coming to an end.

"They're persistent, I'll give them that," Ryan muttered, his earlier excitement now tinged with concern.

As they rounded a corner, they found themselves face to face with a lone mecha soldier, its imposing form blocking their path.

The mechanised suit hummed to life, energy blade materialising in its grip.

"Target acquired, I am advancing." The soldier's amplified voice rang out. "Surrender immediately."

Ryan tensed, ready to unleash another barrage of elemental attacks, but Migi stepped forward, her eyes glowing with an inner light.

"Let me handle this one," she said, her form shimmering as she shed her human disguise.

In her place stood a magnificent fox spirit, nine tails fanning out behind her, crackling with electrical energy.

The mecha soldier hesitated for a moment, clearly not expecting this transformation.

Migi seized the opportunity, bounding forward with supernatural speed.

As she closed the distance, her tails lashed out, precise bolts of lightning striking the soldier's armour.

The mecha suit's joints sparked and locked up, its systems temporarily overloaded.

"Oh?" Ryan muttered, his arms tucked as he watched the battle.

But the Ethereal Sentinels were nothing if not prepared.

The soldier's armour quickly rebooted, and it spun to face Migi, energy blade slashing through the air.

Migi danced around the attacks, her movements fluid and precise.

Each near miss was answered with a quick strike of her own, lightning arcing from her tails to the soldier's armor.

The narrow street lit up with each clash, the air thick with the smell of ozone.

Ryan observed the fight intently, noting how Migi used the environment to her advantage.

She leapt from wall to wall, using her superior agility to stay one step ahead of the mecha soldier's powerful but slower movements.

The battle reached its climax as Migi feinted left, drawing the soldier into overextending its attack.

In that moment of vulnerability, all nine of her tails converged, channelling a massive surge of electricity into the mecha suit.

The soldier's armour lit up like a Christmas tree, systems overloading in a spectacular shower of sparks.

With a final, defeated whine, the mecha suit powered down, its pilot slumping unconscious inside.

Migi returned to Ryan's side, resuming her human form. "We need to move, move, move, move," she sang, her voice tinged with urgency. "That won't keep them down for long."

Ryan nodded, casting one last glance at the fallen mecha suit. "Where to? You seriously don't think going around the place will help us".

Migi's eyes scanned their surroundings before settling on an inconspicuous metal grate set into the ground nearby.

"I know a place," she said softly. "But it's... not exactly on any official maps."

With a quick glance around to ensure they weren't observed, she whispered a few words in an ancient language.

The grate shimmered and expanded, revealing a hidden stairway descending into darkness.

"The Undercity," Migi explained as they hurried down the steps. "A refuge for those who prefer to stay off the grid."

As they descended, the air grew cooler and damper.

The stairway opened into a vast cavern, illuminated by bioluminescent fungi and mystical light orbs.

Ramshackle buildings and market stalls filled the space, creating a bustling underground metropolis.

Ryan whistled low. "How long has this been here? I don't recall ever hearing of it".

"Longer than the city above," Migi replied, guiding him through the crowds.

"We should be safe here, at least for a while. Here, you should understand the truth about why you're so important... and why the Ethereal Sentinels are so desperate to capture you".
