Chapter 1 - Something

Lucius was laid across the roof of the large school, dangling one hand over the edge. He stared up into the partly clouded sky lazily, thinking about nothing particular important. He was currently laying on the railing of the roof of the large, Theta Magic Academy, a school located in the continent of Therious, helping to train young children who were born with the blessing, or the Curse, of possessing magical energy, or Mana. Lucius happened to be one of the students attending this school, however at this current moment, he was skipping class. The bell for fifth period had rung nearly 50 minutes ago, and he was sure that his sister was out roaming the halls for him. Although he had spent most of his time at school finding ways to avoid class and do nothing, today was a particularly profound day of nothing. The day was so uneventful that Lucius struggled to remember what he had even had for breakfast.

It had been like that for the past few weeks, besides the mundane routine of school, there was absolutely nothing interesting happening, ever. It came to the point where Lucius had considered doing something stupid on multiple occasions just to bring some life, into his life. "In a world full of people who can use magic, shouldn't things be at least a little bit more interesting." Although he didn't mind the calm way he spent his days, he never had anything to look forward too. I really wish that something interesting would happen, anything. He looked down at his right hand which dangled off the edge of the railing. He'd probably have a few more minutes bef—"

"Lucius Komiya! Do you mind explaining what exactly your doing?" The sound of someone's voice shouting out at him from down below made Lucius jump slightly. it didn't help that half his body was already leaning of the edge of the railing at this point. His slight upwards jump caused his body to fully dive over the railing and suddenly he went from lounging on the school roof to falling from 4 stories. However as Lucius landed on the ground, instead of his legs snapping clean and half, they instead easily absorbed the impact, and Lucius landed in front of his sister in a dramatic fashion, almost like a superhero. As he stood up straight and dusted himself off, before shooting his sister a smile.

"Nice landing?" She was having none of it however, and grabbed Lucius by the ear, before beginning to lecture him. Lucius made no move to break away from his sister, as he knew it would be to no avail. He knew that once she got started it would be nearly impossible to get her to stop.

"What in the world lead you to believe that skipping class and hanging around was a remotely good idea? You do understand that this goes just beyond just your future right? Your relationship with teachers and peers is also at stake. Not to mention your training. Don't even get me started with the fact that you were hanging off of the roof of the building! That could of ended in a numerous amount of bad ways!" Lucius sighed deeply, already beginning to tune out the words of his overbearing sister.

"Yeah, Yeah, Yeah. I get it Alice. I s-" Alice interrupted him once again.

"No, you don't get it, because this has been the fourth time this week!" Lucius cringed at that. "You got to understand how this reflects everyone, me, and Mr. Yami." The mention of Yami made Lucius's heart freeze.

"He's not-"

"Angry? No. Disappointed? Yes." Lucius let out a deep breath. If there was one thing that he wanted to avoid dealing with as much as possible was Yami. "Were going back to class, and once we get their, you are going to apologize directly to Yami as well as all of you class mates.

"What!, there's no way, you can't!" However all of Lucius denials were shot down by a single piercing look given by his sister. He sighed once again before putting his head down and obediently following his sister. Despite all of her nagging and worrying, she really did love and care for him, and despite all of Lucius shenanigans and pretending to not care, he really did take everything that she said to heart. As he walked back to class he recalled a memory of when he was younger. He lived at home with his mom and sister only. He had just tried climbing a tree with one of his childhood Friends. to try and catch a rare beetle they had been searching for. Alice had warned them multiple times that it was dangerous but they two boys refused to listen as they continued to scale the tree.

Obviously, they boys had both fallen. Alice stood over the two boys who were rolling on the ground in pain, with a soft look in her eyes. She began to use her healing magic and Lucius body began to feel warm. It was one of the best feeling he experienced in his life. He recalled multiple times where he got injured on purpose just to feel that euphoric feeling again. While she was healing them she had said, "For your own good, remember, All the pain you feel now is only going to help you grow in the future." Lucius didn't understand it now, and he didn't understand it then either." However it always remained a highlight of his childhood life.

Lucius was snapped back into reality by the sound of his sister knocking on the door. They were on the third floor of the magic academy, and they stood in front of their classroom. After Alice knocked she turned back to look at Lucius. "Remember. You walk in there, the first thing that you do is apologize." Just then the door was opened by a girl with dark black hair."

"Finally decided to show up?" Lucius ignored the jeering remark and stepped into the classroom. Instantly, he felt the eyes of every single person turn to watch newcomer. Lucius turned to face the tall imposing figure standing at the front of the classroom. He dawned a black shirt and dress pants with a black tie and a large black overcoat that hung over his tall figure. He then bowed deeply and began to speak.

"Mr. Yami. I do apologize for skipping class again." Alice pinched him in the back, and Lucius kept going. "I now understand how my actions reflect back on you and I promise that it will never happen again." Lucius rose, and Yami simply sighed, obviously used to his shenanigans.

"All right all right. Head towards your seat. You actually arrived just in time. I was preparing to make an announcement that pertains to the entire class." Lucius walked over to his seat as quickly as possible, which was in the center of the back row. All the way he was followed by the irradiating snickers of one of his classmates. As soon as he sat down he turned his head to face the culprit. A black haired boy with bright green eyes stared right back at him, a teasing smile plaster unto his face. Lucius scoffed, trying to ignore him. From his right side a short girl who was writing something down with a pen and clipboard turned to face him.

"5 less minutes. Lucius. It seems like your hiding places are getting worse."

"Can it Izumi." More snickering.

However one sharp glance from Yami cut all of that out. "As you may know, in the next three weeks the school will be holding a tournament of sorts, in order to classify the strongest students of the academy, throughout all three years. It is not required of all students to participate, however, if you are given a recommendation by your teacher, you will be required to participate. The tournament will consist of multiple events that test intelligence, speed and basic physical ability.

"Tournament? This is just a regular batch of tests?" A boy with white hair interjected.

"I wasn't done explaining yet. The tournaments main event will be a 1 on 1 fight between the top 16 candidates in order to determine a winner." That brought some excited reactions from the students as the began to discuss the idea of a 1 on 1 tournament between the academies strongest students. Alice however, raised her hand, obviously a bit confused. "Yes Alice?"

"What is the purpose of this 'tournament', exactly? The school wouldn't hold such a large scale event for the simple purpose of entertainment."

"Your right." Yami verified Alice's concerns before turning to the board and writing something down. He turned to face the class. The words, 'Royal Selection' were written on the board. "The purpose of this tournament is to find a student capable enough to serve as the champion of the queen, who will be decided during the Royal Selection."
