Chapter 2 - Marriage?

The grand hall of the Draesrinad Kingdom was a spectacle of great wealth and power. Marble pillars, intricately carved with scenes of legendary battles, lined the vast chamber. Golden chandeliers hung from the high, vaulted ceiling, casting a warm, resplendent glow across the room. Rich tapestries adorned the walls, each telling a story of the kingdom's storied past, from its humble beginnings to its rise as a dominant force in the land.

King Aric sat on his throne at the far end of the hall, a seat of authority and majesty, crafted from the finest ebony and inlaid with precious gems. His regal presence was undeniable, with a crown of gold resting on his brown-streaked hair and a deep red cloak draped over his broad shoulders. His piercing blue eyes scanned the hall.

Servants moved quietly around the edges of the room, their footsteps muffled by the plush red carpet that ran the length of the hall. Courtiers and nobles stood in small clusters, their whispered conversations a backdrop to the king's silent vigil.

King Aric's daughter, Princess Aurora, had requested an audience with him to discuss a matter of great importance. Though he had a suspicion about the topic, he awaited her words with a mixture of anticipation and dread. Marriage was a subject he had long known would come to the fore, but he had not expected it to be so soon.

The grand doors at the opposite end of the hall swung open with a creak, and Aurora entered, her presence commanding immediate attention. She moved with the grace and poise befitting her royal status, her soft purple gown trailing elegantly behind her. Her brunette hair was intricately braided, and adorned with delicate jewels that sparkled in the chandelier's light.

Aurora approached the throne with measured steps, her expression serene but determined. As she reached the foot of the dais, she curtsied deeply, a gesture of respect that brought a slight smile to King Aric's lips.

"My daughter," he greeted, his voice resonating through the hall. "Rise and speak your mind."

Aurora straightened, meeting her father's gaze with unwavering eyes. "Father, I come to you with a matter that weighs heavily on my heart. It is time we discuss my future, specifically about the marriage."

A hush fell over the hall as the gathered nobles and courtiers turned their attention fully to the exchange. King Aric nodded slowly, gesturing for her to continue.

"I have given much thought to our kingdom's alliances and the strength they bring," The King continued. "There are suitors, each with their merits and their flaws, but one stands out above the rest. He is a man of honor and integrity, whose loyalty to his people mirrors our values."

Aurora's eyes narrowed slightly, curiosity piqued. "And who is this suitor you speak of?"

"Prince Kael Tholens of Tracuvaria, "The King replied without hesitation. "His kingdom is prosperous, his people are content, and he is known for his wisdom and courage. An alliance through marriage would strengthen both our kingdoms."

King Aric leaned back on his throne. The weight of the kingdom's future pressed heavily upon him, but he saw the resolve in her daughter's future.

"Prince Kael," he mused, stroking his beard. "He is indeed a worthy suitor. But tell me, Aurora is this choice made for the kingdom alone, or does your heart play a role in this decision?"

The princess was speechless, but she stood firm. "No, Father. But if it what you want, I'll accept it, for our kingdom. My duty aligns with this choice."

King Aric regarded her for a long moment before nodding. "Very well, my daughter. We shall send for Prince Kael and begin the arrangements. May this union bring prosperity and peace to our kingdoms."

Aurora bowed her head in gratitude, relief evident in her eyes. "Thank you, Father."

As the princess left the throne room, King Aric watched her go, a mixture of pride and melancholy filling his heart. The wheels of destiny had been set in motion, and the future of Draesrinad rested on the choices made that day.
