Chapter 1 - Ch. 1: Dawn

Deafening roars, countless bullets and explosions. A daily occurence outside the walls. 15 years ago, monsters invaded and we're at war. A war that will never end, not because it can't, but because it is not beneficial for those at the top. Atleast, that's the general consensus among the men stationed with me. The men dispatched here have various stories, some wished to protect the country while most got conscripted because of crimes and whatnot. Either way, they are men that are fated to die sooner or later as long as they continue to stay outside the walls or have the will to live. As for me, I have a reason to survive.

Raven...

A man devoid of unnessecary muscles and fat, with eyes that sparked red as if its been dyed in blood, black, unkempt hair with a face innocent yet sexy looking with tanned skin can be seen in a barrack type room, dressed in a camo uniform, sleeping, sitted.

"Hey, wake up." I hear a familiar voice call out to me as a hand shakes my body gently. I was sleeping sitted, holding my rifle. As if ready for everything, afterall, outside the walls, a good night's sleep is only a dream. As I opened my eyes, I see a blonde, scrawny guy shaking me awake. He's someone who you wouldn't expect to be here but he's actually one of the people who's been here the longest. The others either re-entered the walls or died.

How did he survive? It was because he knew his place, and his place is not to be a hero. Because of that, after 3 long and gruelling years, of surviving and witnessing countless death, he's set to re-enter society.

It was the middle of the night.

"Hnng - what's up? Alexis?"

"Nothing, I just wanted to thank you. If not because of you, I wouldn't have survived this long..." Alexis said to me, almost tearing up.

"Hey, stop that. You're setting yourself up."

"Huh? What do you mean?" He asked.

"Heh, noth -"

Alarms blaring

As I was about to say something, alarms blared throughout, red flashing lights and waking soldiers, scrambling to get their equipments. The announcer in the speaker saying that there is an A-class gate that spawned in the middle of the camp.

Shit, really? I know gates spawn randomly and countless gates spawn on the frontlines but to think it's right in the middle of the camp? I thought to myself, A-class monsters are monsters that you'll need ordnance to deal with.

As I stood up, I placed a hand on Alexis and said with enough volume for him to just hear me amongst the blaring alarms. I was the captain of the squad because I've been here the longest.

"Hey, get ready. You have to get home tomorrow, I'll make sure of it." I said to him as he nodded. I wore my bullet-proof vest and helmet quickly as I run to the door with my gun at the ready, guarding it as I watched the other soldiers get ready. After they get ready with their full gears on, I signal the guy across me to not storm out when I opened the doors as he relays the message to the other soldiers.

As the door fully opened, I pulled from my pockets a reflective sheet of metal the size of my palm as I use it to look through the hallway. There's nothing, it seems they haven't broken this far in yet. I signal to the guy right across me to go out as it was safe.

As he got out, he looked left and right, deeming that it was safe. I got out as well and Henry followed right behind me. We all went towards the lobby as per protocol and we encountered the other squads as well. I approached the other squad leader that I was close with and asked him about the situation.

"Quite unlucky eh?" He said in a thick, australian accent. He was a dispatch from australia that I got along with after I saved his ass from almost dying from a bullet to the head. Yes, a bullet to the head. It's not like monsters were the only thing we had to fight on the frontlines, afterall, the original use of the weaponry we were using was to fight the same species as us, Humans.

"I heard from other squad leader that we're abandoning base, we can't live here after a whole A-class gate spawned on us." He said quite seriously.

"Then, where are we supposed to go?"

"Don't know, that's for the higher-ups to decide. So far, the only thing that's been decided is to get out of here as fast and as far away as we can." I hear him say as we march through the corridors with our weapon at the ready.

Minutes passed and we came across a set of stairs that leads to the rooftop. A squad was sent to survey the situation, as we walk the corridors once again to reach the lobby.

A few minutes after the squad went to the rooftop, a crackling noise can be heard from a walkie-talkie.

"Bzzt - do you copy? -bzzt"

"Loud and clear, what's the situation up there?" The designated leader of the whole platoon answered.

"Bzzt - we see the gate up here, dozens of humanoid monsters are coming out, lined up like a brigade and we also see a cyclops coming out. -bzzt"

Hmm, seems it was A-class because it sported organized, intelligent monsters and not because of a powerful one. But a cyclops huh? That's a C-class monster, that thing likes to be alone but its in a batallion?

"Copy, get back here soldier." The platoon leader said.

Boom

After the exchange happened, a loud boom can be heard at the rooftop as the whole building shooked and the soldier at the other end of the walkie talkie said.

"Bzzt - Roger that... wa - wait. WAI - bztt." The soldier buzzed out as the platoon leader shouted at the radio to reveal what has happened to them.

Shit... I thought as I walk through the red-tinted corridors.

Boom

The walls beside me collapsed as a piece of rubble launched at my head, knocking me out for a few seconds.

Waking up, I hear countless gunshot directed at a collosal humanoid monster with thick arms flared out like it was a shield and skin that seemed like it was made of stone. It had a steel collar with remnants of what seemed to be like broken chains. It walked around like a gorilla as it smashed soldiers to bits.

"Shit, a juggernaut?!" A soldier said, firing away at the beast.

As I stood up, I looked around my surroundings and saw my squad, I signalled them to move out and escape. Some may call it desertion but in the frontlines, a special rule is made. And that rule is to survive, survive no matter what.

...

[Cyclops: C-class monster

Description: A huge monster the size of a building with one big eye. It's thick skin can block small-caliber bullets and its strength is enough to throw around vehicles. It finds human a delicious snack.

Note: It will kill anything in its sight, so blind it.]

[Juggernaut: B-class monster

Description: Thick arms flared out like shields and skin like it was made of stone. It walks around like a gorilla because its arms is too heavy for it to carry. Although its leg muscles allow it to leap into the sky. Only armor piercing rounds and above can wound this beast in the right places. It is advised to aproach it with anti-tank weapons. It is an agressive monster that will kill anything in its sight, humans are only one of the creature it kills.

Notes: Highly dangerous, it will kill anything in its sight.]
