Chapter 165 - 5

"I've discovered something about Felicia's past," Peter said, his voice laden with intrigue.

"The past?" Gwen inquired, curious.

"To be precise, it's her early life," Peter clarified as he called up the information on his device. "She was born in the slums. Her father was imprisoned for theft, and she has several younger siblings at home. Despite these hardships, she was determined and managed to secure a scholarship to a prestigious university. However, it appears that some details about the Osborne family might have been fabricated."

Gwen was taken aback by Felicia's complicated background but realized that wasn't the pressing issue at hand. "How does this relate to our search for her? Are we supposed to track down her siblings?" she asked.

"That's part of it," Peter replied. "But there's something more intriguing." He displayed some images and text on the screen. "Recently, a notorious thief has surfaced in New York. This thief targets the wealthy and their gems. The thief is exceptionally skilled; only a few surveillance cameras have captured her elusive figure. She's a woman with a notable physique, but her face is always obscured."

"A notable physique?"

"Well… you have a notable physique too," Peter added.

Gwen's face lit up with a mix of pleasure and embarrassment. "Hey! That's not what I meant!" she retorted. "I'm just wondering why you assume she's Felicia just because of her figure. She doesn't seem like the type."

"Anything is possible," Peter said with a shrug.

Gwen fell silent for a moment. "I think I'll check out Hell's Kitchen," she decided.

Suddenly aware of their close proximity, Gwen realized how close they had become while reviewing the information. When their eyes met, a jolt of embarrassment made her jump back. Normally, she was used to being close to Peter, but this closeness felt different, and her heart raced unexpectedly.

"What's wrong?" Peter asked, noticing her sudden movement.

"Nothing, it's nothing," Gwen said, shaking her head to dismiss her feelings.

She knew she needed to address her feelings eventually. As Spider-Woman, she might need to find a moment to lay her cards on the table with Peter.

After a brief hesitation, she said, "Peter, when this case is wrapped up, I have something very important to tell you."

Peter raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "What is it?"

Gwen hesitated. "Oh! I meant to say, I… haven't quite made up my mind yet."

"That's fine," Peter reassured her. "I'll be here, waiting for when you're ready to share."

Gwen blinked, finding his words oddly familiar.

At Osborne Tower, Peter found time to visit Harry after his conversation with Gwen.

"So, you don't know much about Felicia's background?" Peter asked.

Harry shook his head. "She's my father's secretary. After I took over, I didn't have the time to look into it thoroughly," he admitted. "But now that I know, I agree with you—Felicia has done her job well, and no one should be judged by their family background."

Harry's sentiments reflected his personal experiences. "Peter, about Dr. Connors… thanks for your help."

"It was nothing. Didn't you reach out to me as well?" Peter replied.

Harry smiled, though his appearance had changed. Due to an overdue inhibitory serum injection while pursuing Electro, his skin had turned a paler shade, and his hair now had a gloomy green tint. Despite these changes, he had gained enhanced abilities.

The recent issues had led to major shifts at Osborne, restoring some of the family's influence within the company. Harry was now busy negotiating with Stark to co-develop a new genetic serum. Though it was a scaled-back version, it still offered hope for Osborne's recovery and solidified the company's position.

Meanwhile, Harry also kept an eye on other matters, such as Black Superman.

"Peter, have you noticed that since that night, Black Superman has been less visible?" Harry asked, displaying a news projection.

Peter looked at the projection. "Have you given up on him?"

"Of course not!" Harry replied, activating the message projection. "He's been doing the right thing, but people aren't reacting well."

In the projection, various voices praised Black Superman, calling him a savior. However, some criticized him for not saving their homes and families.

Harry scrolled through channels until he found an official interview. "So, you believe Black Superman shouldn't act independently?" the host asked.

The guest responded, "Yes, that's right. He shouldn't act on his own. Everyone should be under the law."

"This might be difficult for Black Superman," the guest continued. "He's seen as more dangerous than ever before, unlike the superheroes in comics."

The interview ended with a news flash: a Harlem resident had recently sued Black Superman for the damage caused to their community. Harry closed the messages with a wry smile.

"I know how these people work. They're scared. What do you think Black Superman will make of this?" he asked.

"No idea," Peter replied calmly.

As an ancestor, Black Superman might be thinking nothing of it. He had become even stronger recently, with abilities comparable to the cosmic overlord Thanos. Peter himself had no blind spots except for magic resistance, which made him a formidable competitor, even against legendary beings.

Peter turned his gaze upward, contemplating the next steps. With the points for upgrading his talent package reaching one million, he realized it was time to shift focus and refine other skills.

New York, Hell's Kitchen. A chaotic and dangerous neighborhood, perpetually cloaked in the stench of garbage. This urban jungle is a haven for gangsters and criminals, and a last refuge for those on the edge of despair.

Felicia Hardy, known to some as the Black Cat, darted between low-rise buildings, her movements swift and agile. She easily navigated the obstacles and complex terrain of the city streets. However, her efforts to escape were hampered by the relentless pursuit of dozens of gang members. At the rear of the pack was a menacing figure clad in rhinoceros armor—an enforcer known as the Rhino.

"You can't escape, Black Cat!" the Rhino roared, charging like a freight train. His forceful collision demolished several walls before finally bringing Felicia to a halt.

Felicia's heart sank. She only remembered being overwhelmed and injected with a mysterious serum by Electro before losing consciousness. When she awoke, she found herself strapped to a test bed, a green monster looming nearby, sending her into a panic. She fled the lab, only to be confronted by a city in chaos due to a widespread blackout.

As she ran, Felicia noticed changes in her body—her agility had increased, and she felt an intense heat and numbness coursing through her. The pain was unbearable, causing her consciousness to blur. Desperate for relief, she hid in a secluded area, grappling with the fear that she might become a monster.

In her disorientation, two figures approached her. In a state of panic and self-defense, Felicia fought back, only to find herself surrounded by the bodies of her attackers. Horrified, she realized she had killed them, even if it wasn't by choice. The vivid memories of her encounter with Electro, the Green Goblin, and the Lizard Man fueled her fear as she fled the scene.

Returning to Hell's Kitchen, Felicia sought refuge in her old neighborhood, where she had grown up with a skilled thief for a father and several younger siblings. Despite her attempts to break free from her past, she was burdened by debt and the threat of Kingpin's enforcers. Her father's teachings had led her into a life of crime, and now, with her job lost and debts unpaid, she had returned to thievery under her alias, the Black Cat.

Her prowess in stealing gems had helped her repay her debts, but Kingpin, having noticed her unique abilities, was determined to recruit her. Felicia refused, leading to a confrontation with the Rhino.

"It will be beneficial for both of us if you join us, Black Cat," the Rhino urged.

"No, never!" Felicia retorted. "I refuse to become a criminal like you!"

The Rhino's threats escalated. "Remember, you're just a thief. You don't want anything to happen to your father or your siblings, do you?"

The Rhino's words struck a nerve, rendering Felicia powerless. As she contemplated her grim situation, she wished it were all just a nightmare, with her mutation and the subsequent loss of her previous life leaving her vulnerable.

At this critical moment, a familiar figure descended from the sky. Gwen Stacy, aka Spider-Woman, had finally tracked down Felicia. With her glider, Gwen landed gracefully.

"Hey! Big guy, enough with the threats!" Gwen shouted.

"Spider-Woman?" The Rhino's eyes narrowed. "This is Kingpin's business. Stay out of it!"

The Rhino, having received enhanced armor from Kingpin, was nearly invincible to conventional weapons. But Gwen, having honed her abilities and with her suit's advanced technology, faced him with confidence.

"Kingpin?" Gwen's eyes sparkled with recognition. "I've heard of him. It's exciting to finally confront such a big player!"

Without hesitation, the Rhino charged at Gwen, who effortlessly caught his punch. "Well… big guy, you're really strong," Gwen remarked with a smirk.

The Rhino, stunned by Gwen's ability to absorb his force, hesitated. Gwen seized the moment, pushing him back and delivering a powerful kick.

Despite Gwen's previous encounters with formidable opponents like the Lizard Man and Electro, the Rhino's brute strength and his gang's assault proved to be manageable challenges. Gwen's refined skills and advanced suit made quick work of the Rhino's allies.

As the Rhino activated his charge mode, Gwen swiftly countered by using her suit's electric shock function, targeting the gap in his armor. "Ahhhhhh!" the Rhino screamed in agony as his suit short-circuited.

"Well done!" Gwen cheered, receiving praise from the suit's artificial intelligence. "Glad to be of help."

Having dealt with the last of the gangsters, Gwen approached Felicia, who was still hidden under a large cloak.

"Felicia, it's me," Gwen said softly. "I've been searching for you."

Felicia, having never seen Gwen in her Spider-Woman persona, was startled. "Searching for me?"

"Yes," Gwen replied. "Harry and Dr. Connors were worried when you disappeared. We've been looking for you."

Felicia, revealing her transformed appearance with snow-white hair and pointed cat ears, hesitated. "Even with this…?"

Gwen was momentarily taken aback by Felicia's new look but reassured her, "We're here to help."

"Peter!" Gwen whispered, sneaking into Peter Parker's room early the next morning. She woke him gently from his pretended slumber.

Peter blinked sleepily and chuckled at Gwen's cat-eared headgear. "Today's 'kitty day,' huh?"

Gwen leaned in closer, her breath warm against Peter's ear. "Do you like it?"

Peter smiled, "It's not great to be so excited this early, Gwen."

Gwen giggled, covering her mouth, and was then embraced by Peter. "Hey, Aunt May and the others are outside!"

"Just five more minutes!" Peter murmured.

"Alright," Gwen conceded, enjoying the comfort of Peter's embrace. "What's the plan for today?"

"School," Peter replied, savoring Gwen's reassuring scent. "But I'll be heading to Stark Tower later. Dr. Connors mentioned that Felicia has undergone some strange changes. He's unsure what's happening."

Gwen, though perplexed, had come to Peter to seek his support. Her own encounter with Felicia had left her concerned and determined to get to the bottom of the situation.

As they left the bedroom, Aunt May and Uncle Ben greeted them warmly, while Gwen, feeling guilty, hid behind Peter, her face flushed.

Downstairs, George Stacy, Gwen's father, looked stern but greeted them. After school, Peter went to Stark Tower, while Gwen spoke with her father.

"How's it going, Dad?" Gwen inquired.

"The Rhino and the others you captured last night are significant. We're intensifying our efforts to gather information on Kingpin," George explained, excitement evident in his voice. As the chief of police, Kingpin was a major target, and Gwen's recent actions had provided a valuable lead.

George hesitated, sensing Gwen's concern. "No problem, Dad," she reassured him. "What's the matter?"

George finally spoke, "I know being a superhero might make things easier for you, but please, remember to maintain your image in everyday life."

Gwen looked puzzled until George handed her the latest newspaper headline: "Spider-Woman Cripples Gang Crime—Criminals Brutally Attacked!" The accompanying photo showed gang members bound by Spider-Woman's web.

Gwen, embarrassed by the unexpected criticism, quickly shifted the blame to Peter. "It's all Peter's idea! He designed this!"

Peter, accustomed to Gwen's playful accusations, took it in stride. George, however, shifted gears, asking, "Have you told Peter how you feel yet?"

Gwen, caught off guard, hesitated, "I… am still working on it…"

"Remember to come to my party tonight!" Tony shouted as he watched Rhodes walk away.

Rhodes simply waved without looking back. Tony shrugged and turned to Natasha, who approached him.

"Mr. Stark, Peter Parker is here. He's currently in Dr. Connors's laboratory."

"Peter's here? It seems Osborn's former secretary found him, but something must have gone awry… Alright, that's our next stop," Tony replied.

Natasha's eyes sparkled. "Understood, Mr. Stark."

In the laboratory, Felicia, trying to ease the tension, said to Dr. Connors, "Dr. Connors, I think... this transformation has its perks. Your body is stronger now, and your physique is impressive..."

"Really?"

"Uh..." Felicia glanced at Peter, who gave her a nod of approval, then she answered, "Yes, absolutely!"

Connors's mood seemed to lift a bit. At that moment, Tony walked in, followed by Natasha.

"Hey, everyone! Looks like we're all here," Tony said, wrapping an arm around Natasha's waist. "Let me introduce you. This is my new assistant."

Connors, who hadn't seen many visitors recently, was taken aback by the sight of the redhead. He wasn't expecting Tony to bring outsiders in.

"Connors, genetic engineering needs discussions and feedback. It's something you'll have to face sooner or later. The world needs to accept you," Tony said.

"Isn't that your job? I think it's most fitting for you to take the stage."

"Me?" Tony didn't finish his thought. "Well, as everyone knows, I'm Iron Man. I can't dive into genetic engineering while sticking to my own work... This is your domain now. I've decided, and as the boss, I'm making it official."

Tony made a firm decision, then looked at Natasha.

Natasha, pretending to be surprised, asked, "Mr. Stark, this is…?"

"The Lizard. Yes, Connors here is dealing with a small issue. He's not bad, though," Tony said. He glanced at Natasha, appreciating her professionalism, and introduced Peter as well: "A very talented young man, and I have high hopes for him."

Peter offered a polite smile but said nothing.

After the introductions, Tony finally entered the lab.

"I heard the secretary was found? I'm curious, what problem could make it so challenging for you two..."

He was interrupted mid-sentence as he froze. Felicia, who had been sitting quietly, quickly stood up and greeted him, "Hello, Mr. Stark."

She bowed, her cat-like ears twitching slightly.

Tony: …

He turned abruptly, grabbed Peter, and pulled him aside. "Boy, if I recall correctly, she used to be Osborne's secretary, right?"

"Yes, Mr. Stark."

"Then do you think she'd be interested in working at Stark Industries? I happen to be in need of a secretary."

"Um..." Peter glanced at Felicia behind him. Natasha, overhearing their conversation, looked on in disbelief.

"Mr. Stark, Miss Natasha..."

"She's from the legal department. Pepper's been trying to get her back recently, and I don't think it's easy to steal her away. Don't you agree?"

Natasha: …

What did that mean? Was she being dismissed? And without any mercy.

She looked bewildered.

She never expected such a turn of events. As the famed Black Widow, she was used to taking things from others, not the other way around!

However, Natasha glanced at Felicia behind her and fell silent. She seemed to mentally connect with Connors, both struggling to comprehend this bizarre genetic mutation.

Why was it so outrageous!

Meanwhile, Natasha's disdain for Tony grew as she found herself increasingly annoyed with his cavalier attitude.

Tony, meanwhile, found it inconvenient to handle Peter's request and had other priorities. He decided to put off recruiting Felicia for now.

Reluctantly, he turned around, but Natasha kept her distance with a polite yet strained smile.

It wasn't that Natasha was being standoffish.

Ninety-nine percent of women wouldn't give Tony a favorable look after this, and it would be odd if she fawned over him too much.

Seeing this, Tony let Natasha leave first with a sigh. The others then discussed Felicia's condition.

The consensus was that Felicia's cat-like appearance had stabilized and was now part of her genetic makeup. In other words, her future children would likely inherit these traits.

Additionally, other changes were mostly neutral to beneficial. For example, her enhanced hearing and agility were beneficial, though she had gained some cat-like traits.

Peter shook a cat teaser in his hand, prompting Felicia to rush forward.

"That's about it. If developed well, there's still potential here."

In the end, they asked Felicia to come in for regular check-ups and allowed her to take time to adapt to her changes.

After handling these matters, Tony did not let Peter leave immediately. He took him to his spare laboratory and instructed, "Jarvis, grant him access."

"Understood, sir."

Tony granted Peter access to the lab.

"Mr. Stark, what are you…"

"Nothing, kid. From now on, this laboratory is yours."

"This is quite sudden."

"It's my usual style," Tony said, waving his hand dismissively. The holographic projection showed, "Spider-Woman… She mentioned you modified her spider silk? Good work."

"Is that why you're giving me this opportunity?"

"Exactly."

"But it still feels a bit unreasonable…"

"Don't worry about it. Come with me." Tony led Peter to an open file and said, "I'm planning a Stark Expo soon. Time is tight, and I need it done quickly."

Otherwise, his body might not hold up.

"I'll open up some permissions and delegate some tasks to you. You'll be responsible for completing them."

"With all due respect, Mr. Stark, maybe you should handle it yourself to speed things up."

"No, no. I have other matters to attend to. I can't waste too much time on this..."

Tony left, leaving Peter with a plethora of tasks and new permissions. Through these, Peter would gain access to Stark's cutting-edge technology and knowledge—opportunities few would ever encounter.

Peter sat at his desk, surrounded by 180° projections of various interfaces. He pondered for a moment, then moved the Howard Expo map model into view.

"Since you brought it right to my door, I won't be polite."

Gwen swung through the city on her spider web, crossing several blocks until she reached Hell's Kitchen once again. Since capturing the Rhino, she had made it a habit to patrol this area from time to time.

Truth be told, Hell's Kitchen wasn't the ideal place to fight crime. The gangs here were deeply entrenched, having become an integral and even dominant part of the neighborhood's fabric. Taking them on in this territory was not only a thankless task but, to some extent, felt like going against the entire community. The unique order of the place was a testament to this.

But Gwen had her reasons for being here. Previously, she had only known that Kingpin was New York's underground king, controlling numerous criminal organizations. However, after Rhino was apprehended, she learned from her father about the extent of Kingpin's criminal empire and the damage he had caused. This knowledge fueled her determination to bring Kingpin to justice, despite the challenges.

Tonight, she encountered an unexpected figure.

"Felicia?"

Despite the black leather coat, the black eye patch, and the markedly different demeanor from the Felicia she once knew, Gwen couldn't mistake the long, cold white hair and cat ears. Not to mention the fluffy tail.

"Spider-Woman… thank you for saving me that day," Felicia said as they met on the roof of a building.

"You're welcome," Gwen replied, curious. "What are you doing here? And…"

She gestured to Felicia's attire.

"Peter mentioned you needed some time to rest."

"I… I don't really know," Felicia admitted, looking puzzled. "I understand that my current appearance might give me an edge. The way people look at me now is different, but… it's not what I want."

Felicia touched the rooftop lightly. "I've come to realize that I prefer the night. I enjoy the freedom and the feeling of moving through the city after dark. Maybe it's a cat thing? I'm not sure… Spider-Woman, this isn't the best place."

Gwen shared her pursuit of Kingpin with Felicia. To her surprise, Felicia asked, "Can I join you?"

Gwen hesitated. "It's very dangerous, Felicia."

"But I'm a superhuman now, right? Look at me—I'm pretty agile, and I grew up here. I think I can be of help."

"Why do you want to join in?" Gwen asked.

"Perhaps because of the money I owed Kingpin? I've paid back a lot of interest!" Felicia joked. "I'm a bit lost about what to do next. Maybe I can learn something from you."

"You want to become a superhero?" Gwen asked.

"Maybe it's a good option!" Felicia said, looking at Gwen with hope. "Will you be my mentor, Spider-Woman?"

Gwen was taken aback and refused, "No, no, no! I didn't mean it like that."

Felicia looked disappointed. "Sorry…"

"No, it's not that. I just feel unqualified to be anyone's teacher. I'm still figuring things out myself!" Gwen explained. After all, she was just a high school student, not suited to be Felicia's mentor.

She saw herself as a novice, driven by passion and still learning the ropes, even though others viewed her as a capable hero.

"Maybe you could learn from Mr. Stark?" Gwen suggested.

"Stark…" Felicia's expression turned sour. "He looked at me like he wanted to eat me."

Gwen thought for a moment. "Well… Mr. Stark might not be the best fit. How about Black Superman?"

To Gwen, Black Superman was undoubtedly the most formidable. His strength and unwavering, mature direction impressed her. He had even imparted some valuable lessons to Gwen, though they were sometimes extreme.

"But I don't know Black Superman personally, and I don't know where he is," Felicia said.

"Don't worry. I know him fairly well. If I get a chance to see him again, I'll ask on your behalf."

"Do you think he'll agree?" Felicia asked, looking worried.

"You've got to have faith in yourself, Felicia. Black Superman is just a man too!" Gwen said reassuringly.

Felicia's spirits lifted as she nodded. "Then what now…"

"Alright, come with me!" Gwen said, determined. "But remember, I'm not your teacher—we're partners!"

"You're amazing, Spider-Woman!" Felicia exclaimed as she hugged Gwen excitedly.

"Hey! Felicia, easy…" Gwen laughed, trying to gently push her off. Felicia's affectionate gesture was overwhelming.

Suddenly, Gwen's spider-sense went off. She quickly shielded Felicia behind her as a dart struck her, blocked effortlessly by her vibranium suit.

"Who's there!?" Gwen called out.

Seeing their attack was futile, the assailants retreated into hiding.

"What do we do now?" Felicia asked, scanning the area.

Her enhanced night vision was useful, but the enemies were well concealed.

"I've located them!" Gwen announced, launching an attack in a specific direction.

Craven, caught off guard, had no choice but to reveal himself. He appeared exhilarated.

"Spider-Woman… it seems you have a stronger hunter instinct than I anticipated. Very good, it seems I made the right choice…"

"Hunter instinct? What does that mean?" Gwen interrupted.

"Apologies, I just activated the thermal imaging sensor on my suit," Gwen explained.

"Heretic! Heretic! Spider-Woman, I am very disappointed in you! Relying on modern technology will only make your hunter instincts gradually dull!" Kraven roared in anger.

This outburst left both Gwen and Felicia feeling a bit confused.

"Who are you? Why did you suddenly attack us?" Gwen demanded.

"Me? I'm Kraven, a hunter." Kraven composed himself and said, "And you, Spider-Woman, are the target of my hunt this time."

"…"

"Well… is there a problem?" Felicia asked quietly.

"You'll need to get used to it, Felicia. People like this are common in this business. At least this time, his skin color isn't green," Gwen whispered back.

"Oh."

The two continued their murmured conversation.

"Enough!" Kraven interrupted them directly. "You will regret your actions, Spider-Woman… the hunt begins now!"

Gwen's demeanor grew more serious. "It seems he's no longer a friend or foe," she warned Felicia, increasing her vigilance.

Then, to their surprise, Kraven, who had just declared his intent to hunt, abruptly turned and fled.

The two stood in stunned silence, unsure of what to make of this "hunter" who had suddenly appeared and then run away.

"Do you often encounter this?" Felicia asked.

"I have to say, this is my first time…" Gwen replied.

Little did Gwen know, her nightmare had only just begun.

At that moment, Kraven had escaped and returned to his rendezvous with Murdoc.

"Is this what you call hunting?" Murdoc mocked scornfully. "You were caught immediately and then fled in despair. What kind of hunter are you?"

Kraven's earlier performance was indeed lacking. Even he couldn't tolerate it anymore.

"Don't worry, this is just the beginning," Kraven said calmly. "I had no chance of winning just now, so I stayed here to await my end?"

"Since you had no chance of winning, how dare you boast about hunting Spider-Woman?" Murdoc challenged.

"I admit that Spider-Woman is more formidable than I anticipated. It is precisely her strength that makes her a more valuable target for hunting."

"So, what's your plan?" Murdoc inquired.

"I must find a way to force Spider-Woman to remove her battle suit," Kraven explained. He pulled out a dart and said, "I don't know what material that suit is made of… but I tested it, and my hunter instinct tells me it's impenetrable."

"That suit is high-tech and provides most of Spider-Woman's combat power."

Murdoc was impressed by Kraven's analysis and began to take an interest. "But it's not going to be easy, Kraven."

"This is the most intriguing part of the hunt, isn't it?" Kraven's face twisted into a cruel smile. "I've faced many opponents before, some stronger and swifter than me, but they all fell to my hands. No matter how powerful the prey, it has weaknesses. My job is to gather information, attack relentlessly, exhaust my prey, expose its weaknesses, and then… deliver the fatal blow!"

Murdoc began to see the potential in Kraven's methods and was eager. "If you need anything, just ask. Mr. Kingpin will support you."

"In that case, I will take you up on that. My equipment needs upgrading, and I also require some of your manpower…"

Because of the arrangement, they didn't meet again for a few days, and Kraven's incident quickly faded from Gwen's mind.

She now focused on training Felicia. As this was her first time mentoring a junior hero, she was dedicated to ensuring Felicia's growth.

In the past two days, Gwen had taught Felicia many tricks and techniques she had refined through experience. Felicia absorbed these lessons quickly. She had embraced her new identity as "Black Cat" at night, finding freedom in her nocturnal activities.

Felicia's skills, honed as Osborne's capable secretary, translated well into her superhero training. Her agility, balance, and flexibility accelerated her learning curve, allowing her to master combat techniques rapidly.

Gwen remarked, "Felicia, maybe you should consider developing your own fighting style."

"Really? Isn't it too soon?"

"Not at all. The techniques I've shown you were developed based on my own abilities and might not suit you entirely."

"And…" Gwen squinted and looked down, "Just in time, another group has arrived for you to practice against."

Below, a group of gangsters from Kingpin's organization was transporting goods on the street.

Gwen had noticed an increased frequency of encounters with Kingpin's men recently, likely due to Felicia's presence. Although most of these encounters involved low-level minions and yielded little valuable information, Gwen was eager to deal with them.

She and Felicia quickly moved in to confront the gangsters.

Initially, Gwen thought it would be a routine encounter. However, after they took down the last gangster, Felicia suddenly cried out in pain.

Gwen scanned the area and found that Felicia had been hit by an arrow. Fortunately, it was not a fatal wound; the arrow struck her thigh.

Gwen, accustomed to dealing with enemies armed with firearms, was unfamiliar with the bow and arrow. Given firearms' superior firepower and convenience, using a bow suggested a high level of confidence in one's skill.

Gwen's unfamiliarity with bow-related injuries complicated her response. "Are you okay, Felicia?" she asked, examining the wound.

The arrow was embedded deeply and Felicia mentioned, "Um… Spider-Woman, I feel something strange. The wound is a bit numb."

"Damn, is it poisoned?" Gwen quickly checked for any signs of the enemy. Despite using infrared and thermal imaging, she couldn't locate the attacker. It seemed the enemy had fled after shooting the arrow.

Gwen's spider sense had failed to alert her, which made her uneasy. Nevertheless, she focused on the immediate task.

"Felicia, hang in there. I'll get you to safety," Gwen said, resolving to avoid removing the arrow to prevent further injury. She broke the arrow shaft and picked up Felicia, using her spider silk to swing away as quickly as possible.

"Where… are we going?" Felicia asked, clutching Gwen.

Gwen, who had calmed down after a brief moment of panic, recalled her own injury experience when Peter had helped her. Although Osborn and Stark were alternatives, reaching out to them was more complicated. Peter was closer and more accessible, and Gwen trusted him more.

Deciding to go with the more convenient option, Gwen said, "We're heading to… a friend of mine."

….

"How?" Murdoc asked Kraven.

"Successful," Kraven responded, making a bow-and-arrow motion. "One hit, and the prey can't escape."

After numerous tests with cannon fodder over the past few days, Kraven was confident that Spider-Woman, clad in her spider suit, had no apparent weaknesses—at least not to him. His methods had proven ineffective in causing her significant harm.

But this didn't deter him. If no weakness could be found in Spider-Woman herself, he would create one. And if he couldn't find it in her, he would look for it in those around her. Thus, Felicia became Spider-Woman's vulnerability.

Tonight, Kraven had concealed himself with his honed hunting skills, avoiding Gwen's spider-sense. This meticulous planning allowed him to target Felicia with his arrow.

Yet, Kraven was not satisfied. This single weakness wasn't enough for him to eliminate Spider-Woman with a single strike and claim complete victory. He needed to remain hidden and press on to deplete Spider-Woman's mental energy further.

Kraven's smile was filled with malice. "That arrow will lead me to uncover more weaknesses of Spider-Woman…"

Meanwhile, Gwen had finally reached Peter's bedroom window, swinging in with her spider silk. She knocked and called out, "Peter, hurry! Felicia needs you to take a look."

"Come in," Peter responded, opening the window with a frown. "You really should keep a better schedule. Staying up late will make you look tired. Two ladies."

Gwen gently placed Felicia on the single sofa. "Sorry to bother you so late, Peter, but I'm the only one who could help right now."

Peter sighed, already having used his clairvoyance to assess Felicia's injury. Despite this, he still asked, "Let me see what happened to her."

Gwen quickly summarized the events of the night.

"So, you just brought Felicia here?" Peter asked, eyebrows raised.

Gwen looked momentarily stunned. "Is there a problem?"

Peter retrieved his medical kit, having prepared a deluxe version of the military first aid kit for such emergencies. He asked Felicia to lie down quietly and began treating her wound. He addressed Gwen, "Given that the attack was obviously premeditated, it's unlikely they merely intended to shoot Felicia with a random arrow. It's more probable they aimed to follow a trail… and catch something else."

Gwen blinked in disbelief. The Green Goblin, Lizard Man, and Electro, all of whom she had faced before, were not known for their strategic planning, which left her unprepared for such tactics.

Realizing this, Gwen felt a deep pang of guilt. Had she recklessly endangered Peter and her family by bringing Felicia here? Her own family and Peter's all lived here, placing them all in jeopardy.

Overwhelmed by this realization, Gwen stood there in shock, struggling to regain her composure. Peter's voice finally brought her back to reality.

"Spider-Woman? Spider-Woman?"

She snapped out of her daze, her voice trembling as she replied, "Peter, what's wrong?"

Peter looked at her and said, "I've removed the arrowhead from Felicia's wound, but the toxin can't be cleansed under the current conditions, and its effects are unclear. I've contacted Harry; we need to head to Osborne Tower. It will be quicker there."

Everything was quickly arranged. Gwen, feeling both relieved and guilty, murmured, "I'm sorry, Peter, I didn't expect…"

Peter reassured her, "Don't blame yourself. Spider-Woman, it's not your fault. You've done well. The attacker's arrows are highly dangerous and expertly used. If you hadn't brought Felicia here immediately, the situation could have been far worse."

Peter's comforting words brought a ray of warmth to Gwen's previously gloomy heart.

"Thank you, you're so kind, Peter," Gwen said, feeling grateful. If she weren't in her spider suit, she would have hugged him tightly, savoring his comforting presence.

Felicia, despite being injured, felt confused by the odd dynamics between Peter and Gwen. Knowing that Peter and Spider-Woman were acquainted, she wasn't shocked to find herself brought to Peter's place. However, witnessing Peter interact with Connors and Stark, and noticing the strange atmosphere, left her unsettled.

She wondered why she was suddenly so concerned and whether she was overthinking things.

Meanwhile, neither Peter nor Gwen noticed Felicia's troubled thoughts. They were focused on figuring out how to get to Osborne Tower.

"You take Felicia there first. I'll find my own way," Peter suggested.

Gwen was adamant. "No, Peter. Not only is there a risk that you might become a target, but it's also dangerous for you to go out alone at night."

Peter reluctantly agreed, "Let's drive then."

"Where did you get a car?" Gwen asked.

Peter gave her a knowing glance. "You'll find out soon."

Gwen watched as Peter effortlessly pried open her father's car and got into the driver's seat. "Get in, you two. If we delay, we'll miss the dawn."

Gwen hesitated, "Isn't this a bit inappropriate?"

Felicia nodded vigorously. This was a police car. Peter's audacity was startling. "Do you even have a driver's license?" she asked.

"It's fine. The car belongs to me; I'll just return it in time," Peter replied, starting the car. "Don't worry, my driving skills are top-notch."

Gwen sighed as she got in the car, mentally apologizing to her father. Felicia followed suit.

The police car sped through the streets, which were quiet at night. When a young officer on the night shift noticed the speeding vehicle, he prepared to pull it over. But an older officer stopped him with a tap on the head.

"Kid, look at the car first," the older officer said.

The young officer glanced at the vehicle and muttered, "It's one of ours, which makes it even worse…"

The older officer gave him another firm slap and said, "Remember this car. If you want a future in the department, mind your own business."

Thus, the trio arrived at Osborne Tower in record time.

….

Harry had been waiting for quite some time. After exchanging greetings with Peter and the others, his eyes inevitably settled on Felicia.

"Not that I have any ideas," he began, "but these past few days, though we've shared information, seeing you in person is something else."

"Felicia, you've changed so much," Harry remarked.

Felicia touched her furry, somewhat sensitive ears and replied, "Mr. Osborne, I'd rather not have had this change."

"No, I meant not just your appearance. Your whole demeanor seems different. I might not have recognized you if I hadn't known," Harry explained as they made their way to the laboratory.

Here, Peter carefully tended to Felicia's wounds. "Despite your strong physical condition, avoid strenuous activities in the coming days," he advised before conducting further tests. Examining the toxin on the arrowhead, Peter swiftly deduced its nature.

"This toxin is akin to an anesthetic causing nerve paralysis. While it can lead to corrosion and ulcers if untreated, it's typically not fatal," Peter explained, noting additional elements. "It seems to contain a trace of something akin to a pheromone, causing the infected to emit a continuous signal..."

"It's a tracking device!" Gwen interjected.

"Exactly," Peter confirmed.

Confused, Harry inquired, "What's happening?"

Gwen proceeded to explain Peter's theory.

"I'm not worried on my end. Osborne's security detail isn't to be underestimated," Harry flexed his arm muscles. "Remember, I'm not much weaker than you now."

"I get it," Gwen glanced at Peter. "My concern is primarily for you, Peter."

"I've been with Stark most of the time lately, so I'm less concerned," Peter reassured.

"And the rest of the time?" Gwen pressed.

"You're too tense, Spider-Woman. The other person isn't like Electro, out to kill me," Peter replied.

"But..."

"Felicia, maybe you're overthinking this," Harry interjected, sensing tension between the two.

"If you're worried, I'm free these days. I can be Peter's bodyguard," Felicia offered. "I think I can handle any trouble."

Gwen frowned, sensing something amiss. Despite her unease about Felicia's offer, she couldn't find a reason to decline.

"That works," Gwen reluctantly agreed.

Knowing Gwen's identity as Spider-Woman for some time, Harry refrained from getting involved in the couple's affairs, feeling it inappropriate despite his allegiance to Peter.

Peter broke the silence, "So, who's our adversary this time? Any ideas, Spider-Woman?"

"I've been looking into Kingpin's affairs lately. It could only be him," Gwen replied.

"Do you have a more specific lead?" Peter asked.

"A specific lead?" Gwen pondered before recalling a rugged man in a mink jacket and leopard tights. "I remember now! It's Kraven! Kraven the Hunter!"

She recounted the night Kraven declared his hunt, "He said he's coming after me..."

"Hunting?" Peter mused, examining the arrow. "That seems fitting."

"I underestimated him," Gwen admitted. "I thought he was just another eccentric..."

"All our foes so far have been monsters. Maybe this is different?" Peter theorized.

Deep in thought, Gwen asked, "What should I do?"

Unconsciously reliant on Peter, she remarked, "I don't know why, but whenever you're around, I look to you for answers."

"It's simple. Wait," Peter advised. "He's a hunter. He'll strike again..."

Peter's prediction proved accurate.

The following day, Kraven attacked Gwen.

Strangely, her spider sense failed to warn her. Fortunately, her vibranium suit protected her from harm.

Kraven's attacks continued sporadically with no discernible pattern, targeting not only Gwen but also innocent bystanders with traps, bombs, and poisons.

Gwen found herself constantly on guard, exhausted by the relentless assaults.

Facing Kraven proved more challenging than any adversary she'd encountered. Despite his physical prowess, Kraven's cunning and unpredictability posed a formidable threat.

Gwen realized she was being hunted, trapped in Kraven's game.

She contemplated abandoning her identity as Spider-Woman to protect those she cared about, hoping to end Kraven's pursuit.

However, Kraven's assaults intensified, drawing closer to Gwen's home and loved ones.

Until one fateful day, Gwen's worst fear materialized.

She was attacked again, this time by a simple dart bearing a photo of her and Peter together.

On the reverse side, a chilling message read:

"I've found you, Spider-Woman."

...

Chapter 64: Social Death (Part 1)

In the Bedroom

Felicia lounged lazily on the single sofa, idly playing with the sharp claws of her new suit.

Extend, retract, extend, retract.

Since that night, Harry had utilized his resources to custom-make a new suit for her. However, every privilege comes with a price. Just as Iron Man is associated with Stark, Felicia would be tied to Osborn for a while.

During this period, she claimed to act as Peter Parker's personal bodyguard, though Kraven only knew him as Spider-Woman's assistant. While Peter was indeed a potential weakness for Spider-Woman, he was not her only vulnerability.

This was insufficient to prompt Kraven into a direct attack. Instead, he continued to harass, draining Gwen's energy and rendering Felicia not just useless but also a consumer of Peter's hospitality.

Felicia retorted confidently, "I've been working hard to protect you. Isn't it normal for you to provide for my food?"

"This guy is becoming more and more like a cat. This wasn't the case before..." Peter sighed inwardly.

Seemingly bored, Felicia suddenly asked, "By the way, what's going on between you and Gwen? Or rather, Spider-Woman... what's happening there?"

"What do you think of Spider-Woman?" Peter deflected.

"You're quite perceptive."

"Don't change the subject. Answer me, Peter Parker."

Peter calmly replied, "Since you're so perceptive, have you figured out who Spider-Woman really is?"

"Spider-Woman's identity?" Felicia looked confused.

At that moment, Gwen entered the bedroom in her spider suit.

"Spider-Woman?" Felicia called out, bewildered.

She then witnessed Gwen rush over and embrace Peter tightly.

"Spider-Woman!" Felicia exclaimed, shocked.

...

After receiving the dart with the photo, Gwen waited, and sure enough, Kraven soon appeared at her doorstep.

"It's surprising to discover that the famed Spider-Woman is just a high school student," Kraven remarked.

"What do you want, Kraven?" Gwen clenched her fists.

"Nothing, but don't you find it unfair?" Kraven began. "Both of us possess the instincts of hunters. This ability allows us to predict danger, surpassing ordinary people to become the finest hunters."

"So, you can deceive my spider sense?" Gwen narrowed her eyes.

Kraven continued, "But you, you wear this high-tech armor. You've forsaken your hunter instincts, making my hunt dull."

"I have a proposition," he proposed, unsheathing his dagger. "Why not remove this battle suit and engage in a fair hunt?"

"A fair hunt?" Gwen questioned.

"Yes, if you don't use the suit, I won't attack... Gwen Stacy," Kraven offered.

He sought a perfect and enjoyable hunt. Attacking Gwen's loved ones would only enrage her and intensify her resolve, making her fight to the bitter end. It was the hunter's strategy to exploit these vulnerabilities, instilling fear and exposing greater weaknesses.

Kraven insisted on neutralizing the vibranium suit.

To him, Gwen in her current form was like a fortress, impervious to conventional weapons, explosives, and poisons due to the suit's internal filtration system.

Lacking any positive feedback frustrated Kraven. He despised the vibranium suit. Only by removing this advantage could the hunt proceed.

Upon hearing Kraven's terms, Gwen reluctantly agreed.

"Very well..." Kraven smiled. "Looking forward to our next encounter, Spider-Woman."

He departed swiftly, leaving Gwen to drag her exhausted body and mind back to Peter's bedroom.

And then came the scene that had unfolded earlier.

Felicia's eyes widened in disbelief. "Spider-Woman, how could you..."

She glanced at Peter, who not only did not refuse Gwen but also comforted her by putting his arm around her waist and stroking her head.

"!!!"

Felicia gazed skyward.

It's over between them...

"Felicia, didn't you figure it out?" Peter queried.

Gradually calming down, Felicia scrutinized Peter and Gwen before realization dawned.

"I... I need some fresh air," she muttered, head bowed in embarrassment, and slinked out to clear her head.

"So, you knew all along?" Gwen nestled in Peter's arms, sounding slightly reproachful.

"Well, I didn't want to disrupt your superheroics or upset you," Peter reasoned.

"Humph! I'm upset now!" Gwen hugged him tighter. "Oh my God, you've known all this time? You've been laughing at my jokes..."

"What did you think I was doing?"

Gwen buried her head in Peter's arms, embarrassed.

Tired from the mental and physical strain inflicted by Kraven and the exposure of her identity, Gwen collapsed into Peter's embrace, seeking solace.

She desperately needed a sanctuary for her weary soul. Yet even in rest, she sensed impending challenges looming ahead.

"Peter! You knew all along?" Gwen exclaimed in disbelief.

"In my defense, Gwen, I was afraid of complicating your life as Spider-Woman," Peter explained gently.

"That's no excuse! You've been playing along with my antics from the start!" Gwen was mortified. "I thought I was being clever..."

"What did you take me for?"

"..." Gwen buried her face deeper into Peter's arms, refraining from further comment.

Exhausted and emotionally raw from Kraven's torment and her identity being exposed, Gwen found refuge in Peter's arms, unburdening herself of thoughts she'd long kept hidden.

"I've never faced such a formidable foe. He even uncovered my true identity..." Gwen confessed vulnerably.

"I'm scared, Peter. For myself, for you, for my parents, for Uncle Ben... they could all get hurt," Gwen continued, her voice wavering.

"Peter, did I make a mistake becoming a hero?"

"Remember Electro? He wanted you dead, and I..." Peter trailed off. "I faced that darkness head-on."

"Although I couldn't defeat him outright, I stood up to him. It scared me, Gwen," Peter admitted.

"You know, Peter, I started as Spider-Woman on a whim to test my abilities. It wasn't until you inspired me to help others that I felt a true sense of duty."

She spoke at length until fatigue overcame her, and she drifted off to sleep in Peter's arms, finally finding peace.

Yet, even as she rested, Gwen sensed larger challenges on the horizon.

Peter! How did you figure it out? Gwen wondered, overwhelmed by a mix of shame and anger. She contemplated how everything she'd done recently had been under Peter's watchful gaze.

From their first meeting, their chats online, to their occasional flirtations... she suddenly felt adrift in the futility of it all.

"You're tired. Let's rest," Peter comforted her.

"That's not enough..." Gwen leaned in, removing her mask and kissing him.

Amidst the embarrassment of her identity being exposed and the rush of emotions, Gwen and Spider-Woman's internal conflict and love became the fuel for their budding romance.

Hmm... perhaps he's navigating this as best he can.

After a while, Gwen caught her breath and murmured, "Peter, thank you."

"It seems Kraven has really put you through the wringer," Peter observed.

"Yes, I feel drained now..." Gwen nestled into Peter's arms, utterly vulnerable.

She already trusted Peter deeply, but now that her secret was out, she held nothing back, pouring out her heart and soul.

"Facing him was terrifying. Now, I just need a moment of peace," Gwen sighed wearily.

Of course, the challenges ahead still loomed large. Upon waking, Gwen left her vibranium suit behind and ventured out once more.

Yet, this time, fueled by Peter's support, she felt an electrifying sense of purpose.

"So, am I the only one left?" Peter mused aloud, setting the vibranium suit back in its box.

"Why would you be the only one left?" Felicia's return surprised him, her expression fraught with frustration.

"Oh, nothing. You don't need to continue protecting me," Peter reassured her.

"Huh? Why?" Felicia frowned.

"Kraven has declared war on Gwen. He won't be coming after us," Peter explained calmly.

Felicia hesitated, her ears perking up anxiously. "Are you sure? What if he breaks his agreement? Shouldn't I continue protecting you, just in case?"

Peter paused, contemplating her words.

"Why are you so fixated on being fed and housed?"

Chapter 65: Social Death (Part 2)

Peter couldn't allow Felicia's scheming to succeed, so he decisively ushered her out, prompting her to curse and berate him as she climbed out the window.

Peter shook his head. "Considering the timing, Tony's team should be arriving soon, right?"

Stark Tower

Tony surveyed the aftermath of the chaotic party in the hall, where he had recently stolen the spotlight at a hearing, humiliating the military and Hammer Industries.

Simultaneously, a heated argument at the party had erupted between him and Rhodes, who donned a steel armor, leading Tony to default on him an armor.

Pepper approached Tony, her expression complex. She was both infuriated by the billionaires' absurd antics and distressed upon learning about Tony's palladium poisoning.

In her mind, if the palladium poisoning stemmed from the steel suit, why not simply refrain from wearing it? She struggled to comprehend what Iron Man meant to Tony.

Their ensuing quarrel even led her to contemplate resigning, though ultimately she remained at Stark Industries.

She couldn't quite let go, despite Tony's absurdities, after having cared for him all these years.

Seeing Pepper, Tony's spirits lifted. "Damn it, Rhodes... don't think I'll forgive him."

Then he inquired, "Pepper, what's it been like being CEO of Stark Industries during this period?"

"It's no walk in the park, especially with you as my boss," Pepper replied, her tone edged with irritation.

"Heh." Tony chuckled dryly. "Since you're feeling worn out, why not take a vacation?"

Pepper was taken aback. "A vacation? What kind of vacation?"

"You said you were tired, didn't you? Even as CEO, you should take some time off for yourself once in a while. Let's see... how about a month?" Tony mused aloud.

Tony reminisced, "Go to Europe, visit our hotel in Venice, the Tony Hotel. Remember? It's a great spot for a vacation..."

"Tony!" Pepper finally interjected, unable to bear his rambling any longer. "Are you really going to let your legacy be buried in that steel armor?"

Tony fell silent.

"I am Iron Man. I can't give up the armor. That would be giving up on myself," he asserted.

"But Tony, you're really going to die," Pepper pressed.

"There's no other way," Tony admitted, activating a holographic projection showcasing data on a serum and biological armor.

"But the condition is I'd have to turn into some green monster or a madman with a split personality in my head. You know I can't accept that, Pepper. It's not who I am," Tony declared.

Standing up, Tony gazed at Pepper. "In these final moments, I want to spend them with you, Pepper."

"With... with me?" Pepper stammered incredulously, unable to believe her ears.

"Please, why me? You have your birthday party planned, your own World Expo..." Pepper protested.

"Those things aren't important," Tony dismissed.

Perhaps sensing his impending demise, Tony expressed the conflicting emotions he had long kept buried: "I just want to be with you now."

"Do you even know what you're saying, Tony?" Pepper's eyes widened in disbelief.

"Of course," Tony replied, spreading his arms resolutely. "I'm laying it all out. Rhodes will inherit my steel armor and take up the mantle of Iron Man. The material doesn't matter; he's inheriting my iron will to survive."

"Peter Parker! He's a smart kid... With my time short, I reluctantly admit he might not just match but surpass me. I've passed on my wisdom to him, every bit of scientific and technological data stored in my computers. How much he absorbs is up to him; I can't guide him step by step."

"And finally..." Tony turned to Pepper, leaving her speechless with his next revelation. "I'm entrusting Stark Industries to you, Pepper. Carry on what I couldn't finish. Transform Stark into a clean energy powerhouse for the good of humanity."

"No, this is too much," Pepper protested.

"Crazy, yes, I like that word. This way, I'll have no regrets," Tony declared.

Extending his hand in front of him, Tony snapped his fingers. "I am... Iron Hero!"

Acknowledging that he wouldn't have uttered these words or taken these actions if not facing death, Tony felt a rare sense of relief.

"Can we go on that vacation now?" he asked Pepper.

Pepper agreed, unable to refuse Tony's heartfelt confession, the most valuable gift he could give.

Perhaps because he had finally voiced his innermost thoughts, Tony felt a weight lift off his shoulders. At that moment, Jarvis interrupted with news.

"Sir, you should visit Peter Parker's lab," Jarvis suggested.

"Oh? What's happened now?" Tony quipped, unperturbed by whatever mess Peter might have caused, given his impending demise.

"Well, sir, he hasn't caused any trouble," Jarvis clarified.

"What's going on then?"

"You'll understand once you're there. Peter mentioned something about a surprise."

"Well, Jarvis, you're unusually cryptic today. Lead the way," Tony chuckled, heading straight for the lab.

Inside, Peter had a model of Howard Stark's World Expo on display. Tony glanced at it briefly, not dwelling on the past tasks he'd assigned Peter.

"After all, I tasked him with the World Expo," Tony reasoned aloud.

"Kid, Jarvis said you've got a surprise for me? Let's see if you can truly surprise me," Tony challenged.

"Um... I can't be sure, Mr. Stark. I stumbled upon something intriguing," Peter admitted.

"...Well, you've certainly managed to surprise me," Tony remarked, observing the holographic projection sphere in Peter's hand.

Recognizing it as a new elemental structure, Tony marveled at its discovery. Though surprised, he maintained composure, aware that its era-changing potential would be revealed through further investigation.

More perplexing than the discovery itself was its origin from his father's long-forgotten World Expo model.

Thus, Tony instructed Jarvis to take over the lab for testing, while Peter eagerly assisted in exploring the newly found element's capabilities.

Initially curious and excited, Tony's demeanor shifted to serious contemplation as Jarvis analyzed the data.

Finally, when all results were in, Tony sat back, eyes wide with astonishment, experiencing true bewilderment for the first time.

"Sir, based on our findings, this new element appears to..." Jarvis began.

"Enough," Tony cut in abruptly, waving his hand to halt Jarvis's report.

Rubbing his face in disbelief, Tony muttered, "I think I'm ready to die now."

Chapter 66: Big Resolution Upgrade

Despite Tony's earlier declaration, death wasn't imminent. He now regretted his vulnerability and revealing his emotions to Pepper. If only he could have kept those feelings buried deep within himself!

But now, with his life restored and Pepper by his side, he had everything he wanted. Yet, he couldn't shake the feeling of having compromised his moral integrity.

"Damn it, what about iron will, passing on wisdom, and benefiting mankind... I..." Tony's lips trembled with emotion.

"Mr. Stark, are you alright?" Peter asked, concerned.

"I..." Tony hesitated, unsure how to respond. Instead, he changed the subject, diverting attention away. "Alright kid, you've done a tremendous job. Do you understand what you've achieved? You've ushered in a new era for humanity and... saved my life."

"I think credit should go to Mr. Howard. His World Expo model was surprisingly accurate," Peter remarked.

Tony fell silent at those words. Unaware of the video message Howard had left him, Tony couldn't grasp his father's expectations, leaving him frustrated and blaming Howard, even after 20 years of his passing.

"With all due respect, sir, current technology cannot synthesize new elements," Jarvis reminded him timely.

But Tony scoffed in response, "I'll do it. I'm more capable than him."

Grabbing Peter, Tony exclaimed, "Boy, let's take a ride in my luxury sports car!"

The two sped through the city, covering 160 yards in a blink before returning to Tony's mansion.

"Hurry up, let's renovate my villa," Tony urged Peter as they entered.

Controlled by Jarvis, robotic arms waved at Peter, "Hello, Peter."

They began demolishing the house without much chatter.

"Pick up that hammer and hit where marked... Impressive strength you've got there," Tony observed as Peter smashed through a wall.

"I work out regularly, Mr. Stark," Peter replied.

"Good... have your trainer call me tomorrow. Now, let's get to the wiring."

"Is the electrical box underground?"

"Yes, break up the floor. We're upgrading it," Tony instructed.

"No problem, I'm good at this," Peter assured.

"And the coils. Be careful with them... Move this debris here. The coils need to be perfectly aligned for the prism accelerator to function," Tony explained.

"Understood," Peter confirmed. "Is that right?"

"Yes, excellent. Construction's complete. Now, let's fire it up..."

Under Tony's guidance, everything was finally set.

Tony eyed the large prism accelerator before him, understanding its success or failure hinged upon this moment.

"I will succeed," Tony declared, taking a deep breath and opening the valve.

Electricity surged into the coils, layer upon layer, condensing into a laser beam refracted through the prism, striking the triangle at the device's center.

In an instant, the triangle transformed, radiating a dazzling light.

Using tweezers, Tony lifted the triangle, its new element glowing beautifully.

"Congratulations, sir. You've created a new element," Jarvis congratulated.

"Yes, indeed. I've done it..." Tony called Peter over. "Kid, this is half yours."

...

Meanwhile,

Returning to the legal department, Natasha found herself increasingly out of touch with Tony. Instead, she relied more on Pepper, her immediate boss, for information.

Today, Pepper's demeanor was peculiar, exuding a bittersweet sadness.

"What's wrong, Miss Pepper?" Natasha casually inquired while passing over documents.

"It's nothing..." Pepper couldn't divulge Tony's situation. She replied vaguely, "I might need to take a leave of absence."

"A leave? With due respect, as CEO, your absence will stall a lot of our operations..."

"Don't worry, I'll make arrangements. You might have to take on extra work for a while," Pepper assured.

"No problem," Natasha responded with a smile, hiding her disdain. Once out of the office, her cold expression returned.

Contacting Nick Fury, director of SHIELD, she reported, "I think we can close the net."

"Oh?"

"Tony Stark has been in a bad state, giving up on himself lately. Today, Pepper suddenly took leave. Something has changed, and we can't afford to wait any longer."

"Where are the others?"

"Bruce Banner remains mysterious. Since arriving at Stark's, he's secluded, rarely seen beyond time with his girlfriend, Betty. He's deep in meditation, controlling his emotions much like before."

"I see. And Connors?"

"Beyond his green skin, there's nothing noteworthy. We can likely ignore him," Natasha concluded.

"I understand," Fury acknowledged. "I'll try reaching out to Tony. His father left something significant with me."

...

Gwen swung onto a rooftop using her spider silk, alert as ever after her encounters with Kraven.

Squatting down, she surveyed the city lights, a hint of worry etched on her face.

Without her vibranium suit, Gwen faced tougher challenges and needed to be cautious against Kraven's attacks.

Their numerous battles had mostly ended in Gwen's defeat. While Kraven lacked Gwen's physical abilities, his decades of experience honed his skills and tactical acumen to a level she struggled to match.

Kraven's hunter instincts, akin to Spider-Sense, were heightened, making him a formidable adversary.

Gwen's growth and knowledge absorption from their encounters weren't enough.

Suddenly, Gwen's spider sense blared, and she instinctively threw a punch. Blocked mid-air, she recognized the figure: Batman.

"Black Superman?" Gwen exclaimed, releasing her grip.

Peter released Gwen's wrist and remarked, "Not bad. You've made progress."

"I-I'm sorry, Black Superman... I didn't know it was you," Gwen stammered apologetically.

Unfazed, Peter continued, "You seem to be in trouble."

"Y-yes," Gwen hesitated, then confessed, "I've encountered a tough opponent."

Puzzled by Batman's sudden appearance, Gwen asked, "Why are you here?"

Ignoring her question, Batman persisted in stimulating her spider sense, intensifying its warning signals.

Peter intensified his bio-force fields, further pressuring Gwen's Spider-Sense.

Gwen felt the urge to flee, but Batman urged her to stand firm.

"Do you want to defeat him?" Batman queried.

"Him? Kraven? Of course, but..." Gwen started, perplexed.

"Then hold on," Batman instructed.

Enduring the heightened spider sense, Gwen finally felt the tension break, the overwhelming danger dissipating.

Her body felt light, almost as if floating.

"What did you do?" Gwen asked, her spider sense still alert but more focused.

Inexplicably, Gwen's senses seemed sharper, her perception clearer. Though her vision and hearing were unchanged, she felt attuned to the world around her.

Wind, gravel, potted plants—even the mice—appeared clearer, like upgrading from 720p to 4K resolution.

Despite the newfound clarity, Gwen remained confused. "Thank you, but... why? I mean, why help me? We're not exactly close..."

Chuckling softly, Peter replied, "You're one of my chosen."

"What?" Gwen blinked, taken aback. "Chosen? What does that mean?"

"You'll find out soon. For now, focus on winning this hunt," Peter encouraged.

As he spoke, a distress call blared from Gwen's communication, reporting an attack on a prison van carrying Rhino.

"Requesting support! Requesting support! The van's been hit with heavy firepower and a concussion cannon..."

Simultaneously, in Murdock's office,

"Thriller (Shock Wave) has commenced. Are you ready?" Murdock asked Kraven.

Donning various weapons, Kraven prepared his traps, planning to ambush Spider-Woman.

"This will be our final hunt," Kraven declared confidently.

...

Chapter 67: The Mystery of Spider Silk

"Real hunters often appear in the form of prey."

Gwen swung the spider silk and hurried toward the attacked prison transport, recalling Black Superman's parting words. The final sentence echoed in her mind.

"Hunter and prey?" She murmured.

The Spider-Sense surged instantly, like donning a new pair of glasses, leaving Gwen momentarily disoriented.

At higher intensity, it could even induce slight dizziness.

After pondering for a moment, she quickly realized that the discomfort stemmed from her Spider-Sense vastly outpacing her other abilities and equipment.

The rapid enhancement of her Spider-Sense in such a short span was unbelievable.

And Black Superman, who achieved this, was undoubtedly even more extraordinary.

Gwen grasped the concept that Black Superman used intense stimulation to forcibly evolve her Spider-Sense, but understanding the method didn't mean others could replicate it.

It required not only tremendous power but also a deep understanding of Spider-Sense itself and a method to accurately interpret threat information.

This only deepened Gwen's confusion.

Who is Black Superman, and what is his agenda?

What exactly does it mean to be the "chosen one"?

Suddenly, her Spider-Sense blared an alert. Gwen froze, feeling a dart speeding toward her from behind.

She recognized it instantly.

These were Kraven's specialties. In the past, she had struggled against such tactics, but not anymore.

Still, Gwen watched helplessly as the dart sliced through her webbing.

She plummeted from the sky, barely managing to catch herself with a strand of spider silk before hitting the ground.

"Spider-Woman!" Kraven taunted from a perch above, surveying the scene.

"The hunt begins tonight."

"No surprises that you and Kingpin are working together," Gwen retorted, launching herself upward with spider silk. "You were involved in the Rhino prison transport attack too!"

Kraven deftly dodged her attack. "I merely seized an opportunity," he replied calmly.

His strategy was straightforward: never engage Gwen directly but instead wage guerrilla warfare.

Knowing he couldn't match Gwen's physical prowess, Kraven opted for hit-and-run tactics in the city's labyrinthine terrain.

Advance when the enemy retreats, retreat when they advance—utilizing unexpected ambushes and traps to whittle away at Spider-Woman's endurance and resolve.

This was why he had failed to capture Gwen in their previous encounters.

But not tonight.

Tonight marked the final hunt.

Kraven had meticulously laid traps to definitively eliminate Spider-Woman.

Watching Gwen approach, Kraven felt reassured. His last lingering doubts dissipated.

And so, the hunt commenced.

Kraven's tactics were not without risks, though.

The margin for error was slim; two missteps against Gwen could prove fatal.

Yet this was where Kraven excelled, honed by years of experience to walk the razor's edge.

Eventually, under Kraven's relentless pressure, Gwen stumbled into a bell tower.

Kraven stood atop the window Gwen had shattered, grinning malevolently.

"You can't escape," he declared, leaping down and signaling with a whistle.

From the darkness emerged several hounds that had been lurking.

Though Kraven's physical prowess paled compared to Gwen's, it still surpassed that of ordinary men, thanks to a vial of potent elixir he had consumed in his youth.

These hounds had been trained by Kraven for years, fierce, bloodthirsty, and fiercely loyal. Infused with traces of the same elixir, they possessed formidable strength.

"Let the hunt begin. Let Spider-Woman... wait, where is Spider-Woman?"

Kraven was baffled, realizing Gwen had vanished.

"She fell in here; there's no way she escaped so quickly..."

Kraven sensed something amiss.

The scripted hunt was unraveling, unsettling him.

He swiftly called his hounds and alerted the surroundings, but no sign of Gwen emerged.

"Spider-Woman! Where are you?"

"You can't run. I'll hunt you down myself!"

Kraven's voice reverberated through the bell tower, unanswered.

Suddenly, he hesitated, sensing a presence.

The scene shifted. Behind Kraven, Gwen emerged from the darkness.

Clutching the corner like a spider, her crimson goggles stood out against the night.

Boom!

Gwen landed hard, aiming for Kraven.

But anticipating her attack, Kraven rolled away just in time.

Annoyed, Gwen muttered, "Close, but not close enough."

Her Spider-Sense had warned her of Kraven's strike, yet she allowed the dart to sever her silk intentionally.

She wasn't just evading his hunt; she intended to capture Kraven as well.

Thus, she had played along with Kraven's theatrics, lulling him into a false sense of security until exposing his vulnerability.

"True hunters often assume the guise of prey."

Unfortunately, Kraven remained sharp, highlighting Gwen's still-developing skills—her counterattack had faltered.

"Hmph... Impressive, Spider-Girl. You still manage to surprise me," Kraven remarked through gritted teeth, rising to his feet.

Moments earlier, Spider-Woman had nearly caught him off guard at night.

"So, you've been toying with me? Haha... Never thought I'd be prey one day," he sneered.

"Just a minor counterattack."

"But it's too late," Kraven sneered, withdrawing a pill as his hounds encircled Gwen menacingly.

Gwen's Spider-Sense surged again, alerting her from all directions.

Frowning, she demanded, "What did you take?"

"An antidote," Kraven replied casually.

Suddenly, explosions reverberated throughout the bell tower, engulfing it in white smoke and obscuring their view.

From within the haze, Kraven's voice echoed, "During my travels, I once stumbled upon a fog-shrouded valley. The mist induced hallucinations."

"Further investigation revealed hallucinogenic toxins emitted by the local flora."

"From this, I derived a potent smoke bomb," he continued.

As Kraven spoke, his hounds lunged forward.

With heightened senses and preemptive antidotes, the mist held no sway over them.

Gwen deftly dodged their assaults, swiftly retaliating.

"It seems your fog isn't foolproof," she quipped.

"Really?" Kraven's voice taunted.

Gwen pinpointed his location and struck swiftly, knocking Kraven to the ground with a single blow.

But as she lowered her guard, she suddenly saw Peter lying there and was taken aback.

"Peter, what are you doing here?"

Her Spider-Sense surged again, prompting her to dodge instinctively, only to inexplicably trip on level ground.

"Looks like it's starting," Kraven remarked.

The hounds surged forward in a frenzy. Gwen's rhythm shattered, compounded by sporadic hallucinations—Peter, George, her mother... even Electro and the Lizard.

Besieged from all sides, Gwen leaped upward, scrambling to the bell tower's peak.

Kraven's darts followed, forcing her to dodge and leap across to the opposite beam. Only then did she realize the beam was an illusion—nothing but empty space.

She crashed hard onto the ground below.

"Surrender, Spider-Woman. There's no escape."

"Do you wonder why I chose this spot?" Kraven's voice echoed. "The bell tower's confines make it unsuitable for my direct combat."

"Enclosed by four walls, it traps the fog, ensuring its potency," he continued. "At this height, escape is impossible."

"This trap is custom-made to ensnare you..."

Kraven's voice trailed off, the mist hinting at Gwen's impending fate.

Gwen closed her eyes.

The fog, the illusions, the hounds—all vanished, leaving only darkness and her ever-alert Spider-Sense.

At this moment, it was her only anchor.

"Let's see how much Black Superman has improved you..."

She unleashed her Spider-Sense fully.

Kraven suddenly realized the tide had turned.

Spider-Woman had become razor-sharp and composed.

The fog no longer affected her; every move she made was precise and elegant, as if scripted.

Her intricate spider silk skills were on full display as she wove a web.

Before long, each hound pounced, ensnared and cocooned by her, hanging in mid-air.

Kraven felt a pang of envy.

He realized Spider-Woman now embodied the flawless hunter he had always aspired to be.

He had long considered himself the ultimate hunter, and the realization stung.

In that moment, Kraven sensed Spider-Woman's focus shift towards him.

Unnerved, he couldn't tell if she had spotted him through the mist, but he felt her gaze fixated on him.

How could this be?

Yet Kraven remained composed, knowing tonight's hunt had failed—Spider-Woman was beyond his grasp.

Escape was imperative now.

Nevertheless, far from disheartened, he felt a renewed determination. Next time, he vowed...

Bang!

A sudden explosion beneath his feet interrupted his thoughts, but it was too late.

As he attempted to retreat, Spider-Woman, still in the bell tower, had set a trap that ensnared him tightly in a peculiar binding of mysterious spider silk.

Kraven wished for death.

Chapter 68: Tony's Morning

"Last night, the NYPD successfully apprehended the infamous hunter, Kraven, in the Bell Tower area."

"This legendary hunter has won multiple championship titles in hunting competitions over the past few decades. Simultaneously, he is responsible for several recent terrorist attacks and riots in New York."

On the screen, the news anchor presented details about Kraven, accompanied by a large image of him bound in spider silk.

Tony, lounging on the sofa, clicked his tongue in amusement. "This is more humiliating for him than if we'd just taken him out. Legendary hunter, huh? Spider-Woman's got some skills."

"Tony? Tony!"

Pepper, in a nightgown, emerged from the bedroom, wrapping her arms affectionately around his neck from behind.

"Darling, why don't you sleep a bit longer? It's early."

Tony's expression froze momentarily, fortunately unseen by Pepper from her angle.

"It's... nothing. Just trying to make the most of my time," Tony replied.

"I understand," Pepper nodded understandingly. "I'm going to start packing for our vacation."

"I could help..."

"No, I've got it covered. You should rest... What would you like for breakfast?" Pepper asked gently.

Tony's face tensed. "A burger. A beef burger."

"You really should eat healthier, but alright, I'll fix it for you."

"..."

Pepper hurried off, leaving Tony alone on the sofa, feeling a pang of hopelessness.

Yes, he and Pepper had been together last night.

They'd worked side by side for years, knowing each other inside out. Everything had fallen into place.

But Pepper didn't know about the recent developments in his life.

Tony was eager to explain it all to her, but... he'd said too much that day and now hesitated.

It was a tough situation, and Tony felt he needed more time.

Perhaps sensing his mortality, Pepper had been unusually gentle lately, almost doting, which Tony found somewhat comforting.

Especially last night... it had been something else.

Yet, knowing Pepper would eventually learn the truth... Tony felt his days might be numbered.

Just then, Pepper returned.

"What's wrong?" Tony asked, feeling a twinge of guilt.

"Um... Tony, someone's here to see you."

Tony raised an eyebrow as Agent Coulson from S.H.I.E.L.D. walked in.

"Hello, Stark."

Since Tony's return from the cave, Coulson had been in touch with Stark Industries several times through Pepper and Tony.

Though they hadn't had any deep conversations.

"I remember you, agent. From Homeland Strategic..."

"It's the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. Or just call us S.H.I.E.L.D."

Tony shrugged. "So, what's the issue?"

With new elements successfully developed, Tony had nearly everything—life, wealth, ideals, love... except perhaps an understanding with Pepper, which remained elusive.

There was little that truly concerned him now.

"Our director would like to meet with you," Coulson said, eyeing Tony.

...

"I'm not keen on joining your 'Superboy' club, this..."

Tony glanced at the bald, black-clad Nick Fury standing before him, feeling the man lacked a fitting nickname.

"It's the Avengers, sir," Fury emphasized.

"What's the difference?"

"Well... you've always been a lone wolf. How's that working out for you?"

"What?"

"You're dying, aren't you, Tony Stark," Fury cut in abruptly.

Tony frowned, taken aback by Fury's bluntness.

"How do you know?"

Fury seemed pleased with Tony's reaction.

Dealing with someone like Tony required finesse.

He gestured casually. "Hold on, let me fetch her."

Shortly after, Natasha Romanoff, dressed in her agent attire, entered and took a seat opposite Tony.

Tony regarded Natasha with surprise. His former personal assistant... well, that had been a cover.

Actually a spy?

"You're fired," he declared without hesitation. "You owe me an apology."

Natasha met Tony's gaze boldly. "I think you owe me an apology."

"What? Why?"

"Hey, hey! Looks like you two have some history," Fury interjected, surprised by the tension between Black Widow and Tony.

No animosity, especially from Black Widow—this was unexpected.

Fury redirected the conversation. "Let's focus on business, shall we?"

"You sent a spy into my home."

"Absolutely not. You made Pepper CEO, handed military tech to your brother..."

"He stole it."

"You mean he took Iron Man's armor in front of Iron Man? Seriously, Natasha?"

"What are your intentions?"

"We're here to save your life."

"I don't think I need anyone... Wait, what are you doing?"

Tony halted Natasha, who was about to inject him.

"Lithium dioxide can counteract your palladium poisoning," Natasha explained.

"How did you know about my palladium problem?" Tony sneered.

"The device in your chest is unfinished. Your father, Howard, mentioned it."

At the mention of his father's name, Tony's demeanor shifted visibly.

"What are you saying?"

"The arc reactor was just a stepping stone. Howard Stark was preparing for a technological revolution, leaving competitors in the dust."

"He believed only you had the wisdom and resources to complete his work."

"..."

Nick Fury and Natasha left, leaving Tony to ponder amidst a large box of his father's old belongings.

Pepper joined him, sitting beside him. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing. Just encountered a bunch of mysterious bastards, and..."

He leaned into Pepper.

"There are some things I'd rather not remember. Ever."

...

His condition seemed stable for now, but who knew what tomorrow would bring.

If he could hold on, he might uncover more.

He sighed, realizing he'd forgotten to set up VIP... Well, forget it. Tomorrow's another day.

Chapter 69: Similar Father and Son

"My father, Howard Stark, was a cold, calculating man."

"He never told me he loved me or even liked me. His happiest day was when he sent me off to boarding school."

"Now, someone tells me he was the founder of the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division."

Tony confided, "I wish I knew who my father really was, but I have no clue."

"Maybe you should see what's in there," Pepper suggested, glancing at the box of memorabilia.

The screen shifted to show Howard Stark in a slideshow, gazing at the camera.

"Tony..."

"All of this is for you."

"One day, you'll understand that this isn't just human invention, it's my life's work."

"It's the key to the future."

"I'm limited by the technology of my time."

"But one day, you'll understand all of this, and you'll change the world."

"Tony, my greatest invention will always be... you."

Tony watched the slideshow left by Howard, lost in thought for a long while.

Unlike the original timeline, Tony had already developed new elements earlier. He once believed it was his destiny to survive any crisis.

Proud of having again solved a problem, saved lives, and reshaped the world, he suddenly realized it was all a facade.

Decades ago, his father had prepared everything, eagerly anticipating Tony's future achievements.

It wasn't that Howard didn't care; he just struggled to express it... or something else.

This experience, so different from the original, left Tony with even more mixed emotions.

Tony now understood his father a bit more; they were more alike than he'd realized.

There were things Tony found hard to express openly.

Despite his outward arrogance, he had a fragile and sensitive heart. Only the armor gave him a sense of security.

His genius brain not only granted him a high IQ but also made him acutely aware of how others perceived him.

He knew everything but struggled to relate in conventional ways...

If not for the looming specter of death, he might have held back certain words forever. Well, perhaps some words should remain unsaid.

"Now that the culprit has been found..." Tony chuckled to himself.

Tony, who suddenly saw the similarity between father and son, felt dumbstruck, then overwhelmed with guilt and longing.

He had misunderstood his father all along. He truly wished he could see him again, say hello, and try to apologize, in his own way.

"Hey... your expectations weren't in vain, did you see? I'd already created the new element before I watched your video."

"Why didn't I see your video sooner?"

Tony's thoughts returned to S.H.I.E.L.D.

Initially, their actions had unsettled and irked him.

But now, he felt a deeper resentment.

"Pulling out my father's things at a time like this... it's a bold move," he sneered.

Had he failed to create the new element, facing such a monumental gift might have elicited a different reaction.

Just then, Jarvis appeared.

"Sir, I believe I need to inform you."

"What is it?"

"The tracker you placed on Peter Parker indicates he may be in danger."

...

Outside Stark's residence, Fury and several others sat in a black car.

"So, you're saying he seems to have resolved the palladium poisoning issue now?" Fury asked Natasha, giving her a piercing look.

"Yes, Fury. I've been in touch with him before. The palladium poisoning was severe; the toxins had spread, but when I tried to inject him just now, it was all gone."

"He seems remarkably healthy."

"Damn it, why didn't you inform me earlier?"

"Hey! Remember? I've been reassigned to legal for a while now."

"Agent Natasha, your demeanor seems off today..."

"What?"

"Are you still brooding over losing to a cat-eared girl?"

"..."

Ignoring Natasha's subdued mood, Fury pondered aloud, "It's impossible he resolved it without warning... Could it be Osborn's tech?"

"No, Connors isn't capable of that," Natasha replied firmly.

"Then who could it be?"

"There's someone else, but... it's a stretch," Natasha said after a moment's thought.

"Who?"

"Peter Parker!"

Fury closed his eyes. "Him. Bring him in to see me."

...

Early that morning, Gwen took Peter to the rooftop.

After Kraven's capture and the Rhino Man's escape, George was satisfied.

He felt more could be pried from Kraven.

Finally free of her own issues with Kraven, Gwen was relaxed but suddenly remembered...

She'd confessed to Peter.

So, early in the morning, clad in her Spider-Woman suit, she showed up at his door.

"Hey, Gwen, I'm not sure about this..." Peter advised from the edge of the rooftop.

"No, Peter, trust me. It might be daunting at first, but you'll grow to love it."

Gwen assured him, chest puffed out, eager to share this part of herself with Peter.

This, she believed, was an essential experience every Spider-Man had to face.

Gwen would take Peter on a tandem web-swing.

Finally revealing her identity had been a long-time goal for Gwen.

"I love you, Gwen," Peter said.

"Hey! No interrupting... I know, I love you too. Hold me... tight."

Peter was truly at a loss.

He understood Gwen's desire to include him. Only someone as close as Gwen would think of this.

But Gwen also had a mischievous side.

She wanted to see Peter's shocked expression as they swung.

Peter found the whole thing embarrassing.

Ever since gaining his powers, his senses and reflexes had improved drastically.

Try as she might, Gwen couldn't surprise him.

Throughout, Peter remained calm, even guiding Gwen on how to swing more smoothly.

"..."

They landed on the Brooklyn Bridge, where Gwen felt a tinge of disappointment.

Peter chuckled at her. "I guess I'm not so afraid of heights."

"I think you could be a fighter pilot, Peter," Gwen teased, rolling her eyes and hiding her smile in Peter's chest.

"How do you feel?"

"About what?"

"Me! The infamous Spider-Woman is your girlfriend. Mr. Parker, what do you think?"

"Amazing, Miss Gwen."

"I think so too. Having you, Peter, is amazing. But..."

Gwen looked up at Peter, her eyes filled with hope. After a pause, Peter brushed a strand of hair from her face and said,

"It's okay, Gwen. Whatever you're worried about, you can tell me."

Gwen hesitated, then admitted, "I've put you in danger several times, Peter."

"With Electro, Kraven... and who knows what other villains might target you because of me."

She lowered her eyes.

"I'm a lousy girlfriend and a hero. I keep putting those close to me at risk. I don't know how much longer I can handle it."

...

Chapter 070: Balance

"I'm certain of it, Gwen," Peter affirmed, shaking his head. "You're an incredible hero, no doubt about that."

"You're also an amazing girlfriend, I can vouch for that myself," he added with a smile.

Gwen was feeling a bit perplexed. Unlike when she first became Spider-Woman, she had struggled and felt out of place. Now, however, she had gradually adapted and excelled in her role. Balancing her life as Gwen Stacy and Spider-Woman wasn't easy, but she was managing.

Yet, new challenges kept arising. Each of Spider-Woman's enemies seemed stronger than the last, posing threats not only to her but also to her loved ones. This constant danger weighed heavily on her.

Balancing her dual identities meant facing conflicting demands and impacts on those around her, leaving Gwen unsure of how to navigate it all. It seemed like an ongoing puzzle without a clear solution.

What she needed most at this moment was Peter's unwavering support and affirmation. From the start, Peter had been her inspiration to become a hero, and his presence remained essential as she strengthened her resolve.

Peter responded warmly, making Gwen smile and blush slightly. "What do you mean by 'personal confirmation'?"

Peter changed the subject, admiring the view from the Brooklyn Bridge. "The view here is really beautiful, isn't it?"

Their conversation deepened as they stood atop the bridge, marking the first time they openly discussed their feelings after revealing their identities. Their bond was strong, requiring careful maintenance and nurturing.

Gwen, uplifted by their exchange, happily took Peter home. However, their joy was short-lived as they encountered an unexpected obstacle on their way.

A group of imposing men in black suits intercepted them, prompting Gwen to instinctively shield Peter.

"Who are you?" Gwen demanded, eyeing the group cautiously.

"Hello, I'm Agent Coulson from Homeland Strategy... SHIELD," Coulson introduced himself calmly.

Gwen, unfamiliar with SHIELD and mistaking it for the FBI, questioned their authority. "I don't know you. What's this about?"

Coulson smiled knowingly, gesturing towards Peter. "Mr. Parker, I apologize, but you're involved in a strategic engineering test and must come with us."

"What test?" Peter challenged, skeptical. "We've never heard of SHIELD. How do we know you're legitimate?"

"Apologies, explanations will follow. For now, you must come with us," Coulson insisted.

"So, you're detaining me unlawfully?" Peter pressed, receiving no direct answer.

SHIELD's authoritative demeanor irked Peter. He remembered instances like their handling of Jane's research in "Thor," feeling their overreach keenly.

Coulson signaled his men to act, intending to take Peter by force. Gwen, outnumbered and restrained, couldn't intervene.

As tensions rose, Coulson addressed Gwen directly, revealing her identity to exert leverage.

"Miss Stacy, we hope you will not affect our mission. This is not good for you and your father."

Gwen, caught off guard and regretting her lack of vigilance, felt vulnerable against SHIELD's power. She lacked experience in such confrontations, leaving her at a disadvantage.

Just then, a figure in red and gold armor descended from the sky—Tony Stark, in his Iron Man suit.

Tony intervened immediately, raising his hand with a visible missile and commanding, "Coulson, stand down."

Tony's authority outweighed Coulson's, causing the SHIELD agents to pause. Tony was known not to make idle threats.

"Why are you here, Mr. Stark?" Coulson asked, somewhat surprised.

"You attempt to forcibly take away my people, then ask why I'm here?" Tony retorted. "This is Director Fury's order? Tell him I've already completed the new Arc Reactor. If he has issues, he can come to me."

After Tony's decisive intervention, SHIELD withdrew without further resistance.

Tony turned to Peter and Gwen. "Let's continue this conversation elsewhere."

Finding a quiet spot in mid-air, Tony received heartfelt thanks from Gwen as she hugged Peter.

"It was nothing. Just remember to stand firm against these kinds of situations," Tony advised Gwen with a grin. "As for you two..."

Gwen blushed at Tony's knowing smile. "How did you know..."

"I gave Peter a little assistance," Tony admitted with a smirk, then turned serious. "Spider-Woman, Peter Parker helped me finalize the new Arc Reactor, which led SHIELD to visit."

Tony emphasized Peter's importance, urging Gwen to protect him.

Gwen, surprised by these revelations, glanced at Peter with a mix of disbelief and affection.

Peter, innocently oblivious, met her gaze with a shrug.

Gwen playfully rolled her eyes. "I will, Mr. Stark. Peter means more to me than anything."

Tony cleared his throat, shifting gears. "In my life, a few people have saved me. Besides Ethan in the cave, there's Black Superman and Peter."

He looked at Peter seriously. "I'll keep that in mind, kid."

After a few parting words, Tony departed, leaving Gwen and Peter alone.

"You're quite the big deal now, Peter," Gwen remarked with a smile.

Their peaceful moment was interrupted by the arrival of both SHIELD and Stark.

"What's going on?" Peter asked, puzzled.

Gwen hugged him tightly. "Nothing. We're even now."

Balance had returned, for now.
