Chapter 141 - 4

Chapter 20: Mutants Delivered to the Door

"Doctor, where should I put these things?"

Eric carefully walked into the laboratory holding several boxes.

"Oh, Eric, just find an empty spot and place them there."

Dr. Norbert Berkowitz, who was wearing a white coat, glanced back briefly without stopping his work. He was transferring a reagent from one test tube to another.

After putting down the boxes, Eric noticed that Dr. Berkowitz did not give any further instructions. So, he walked aside, took a deep breath, and tried to focus his energy on the pile of scrap metal on the ground.

He held his breath until his face turned red, but—

Nothing happened.

Dr. Berkowitz glanced over and smirked. "Eric, be careful not to damage my laboratory."

Feeling extremely embarrassed, Eric stood there, sensing that Dr. Berkowitz was mocking him, though he couldn't find any proof.

A few minutes later, Dr. Berkowitz put down the test tube, retrieved another one filled with red liquid from a storage box, and headed to his personal sofa. Just as he was about to lie down, he remembered something and turned to Eric. "Lock the door. I need to rest for a while. Don't disturb me."

With that, he lay down on the sofa with the test tube in hand.

"Are you taking a break?"

After muttering to himself, Eric moved to a different spot and resumed holding his breath.

He had grown accustomed to Dr. Berkowitz's peculiar behavior over the past few days, so this was not surprising at all. Except for briefly pretending to be busy when someone was around, Dr. Berkowitz would sleep with the test tube in his hands and retreat to his study to stay there until dawn.

But Eric was curious about one thing.

Every time Dr. Berkowitz woke up, he looked as exhausted as if he had been working non-stop.

Could people feel tired when they slept?

Of course, Dr. Berkowitz wasn't actually sleeping; he was just putting on a show for Eric.

After more than a week, the analysis of the mutant gene was progressing very slowly. The double helix structure diagram was less than one-tenth complete, despite his continuous reading of related materials.

Realizing that studying relevant books could speed up the analysis, Dr. Berkowitz began gathering more information. He even visited Dr. Zola, a genetics expert, to borrow books and materials.

Although the additional reading helped, progress remained slow.

Dr. Berkowitz had anticipated this outcome, so he was not rushed. Mutant genes were in the extraordinary realm with an extremely high upper limit. It took him six months to analyze the super serum, and the current progress was exceeding his expectations.

As his reading increased, the speed of mutant gene analysis was also slowly improving. Though the increase was minor, it was nonetheless an acceleration.

Therefore, aside from pretending to be somewhat aloof when outsiders were around, Dr. Berkowitz spent most of his time analyzing mutant genes. He avoided exhausting himself, saving some energy for reading at night.

But today, Dr. Berkowitz ended his analysis early.

"Doctor, aren't you going to rest?"

It was only noon when Dr. Berkowitz got up, which made Eric feel uneasy.

"I have something to attend to today, so you can practice on your own." Dr. Berkowitz placed the test tube back into the storage box and walked to the test bench to resume his work.

The analysis of mutant genes couldn't be completed quickly, and he didn't want to waste time with Schmidt. He planned to deliver the fifth version of the super serum to Schmidt today.

Although the fifth version of the super serum required the neurotoxin from Amanita muscaria for optimal results, Dr. Berkowitz had the capability to synthesize this neurotoxin artificially.

Dr. Berkowitz moved quickly and efficiently.

By lunchtime, he had a test tube filled with purple liquid.

After placing the purple serum into a refrigerated insulated box, Dr. Berkowitz carried it out of the lab. As he reached the door, he stopped for a moment, turned to Eric, whose face was turning blue from holding his breath, and warned, "Be careful during training. Don't let anyone find out."

"Got it, Doctor."

Dr. Berkowitz nodded, feeling reassured by Eric's response.

This kid is reliable.

When Dr. Berkowitz found Schmidt, the latter was wearing a gloomy expression while William, the new commander of the Hydra combat force, stood with his head bowed. It felt like winter had arrived in the room.

"Commander."

Holding the incubator, Dr. Berkowitz stood next to William and glanced at him.

"Dr. Berkowitz, what brings you here now?" Schmidt's cold gaze felt like a biting wind, and his grim expression seemed ready to lash out at any moment.

It was clear Schmidt was in a foul mood. Dr. Berkowitz set aside his original plan to flatter Schmidt and handed over the incubator with both hands.

"Commander, the serum is ready and can be tested."

"Really?"

Schmidt appeared surprised. The sudden good news caught him off guard.

He took the incubator from Dr. Berkowitz's hands, turned around, and placed it on the table behind him before slowly opening it.

"It's quite impressive."

That was Schmidt's first comment upon seeing the serum in the box.

"Indeed, it is."

William stared at the serum in Schmidt's hands with a hint of obsession.

"William, inform the team and prepare for the experiment immediately."

Schmidt snapped out of his trance and gave the order impatiently.

"Yes, Commander." William responded and left quickly.

He glanced at Dr. Berkowitz as he passed by.

"Commander, I'll prepare as well." Dr. Berkowitz bowed slightly to Schmidt.

"Alright, go ahead."

Schmidt waved his hand casually. At this point, he was fixated on the serum, not paying any attention to Dr. Berkowitz.

After exiting the room, Dr. Berkowitz hurried along. Upon reaching a corner of the hallway, he saw William waiting with an impatient expression.

"Doctor, is it truly successful?"

As soon as Dr. Berkowitz arrived, William asked eagerly.

Frowning, Dr. Berkowitz pretended to be displeased and said, "Don't you trust me?"

William realized his tone was off and quickly apologized. "Sorry, Doctor. I was just too eager."

"Is something wrong?"

Dr. Berkowitz had noticed something unusual with Schmidt and William. Despite the empire's setbacks on the battlefield, Hydra was advancing rapidly, and it wasn't yet time for the Avengers to appear. So, what could have made Schmidt so furious?

"Actually, it's not a secret. It's fine to share it with you."

As they walked, William explained the situation.

"Two of our bases were destroyed?" Dr. Berkowitz asked in surprise.

William nodded. "Yes, to be precise, they were destroyed by two individuals."

"Two people?"

"Yes, two people—two monsters—two seemingly invincible monsters."

"Wait, you said they're invincible?"

Dr. Berkowitz was genuinely confused.

He had initially thought it might be a change in the Avengers' storyline—perhaps Bucky was captured early and Rogers appeared earlier—but the situation didn't seem to fit that theory.

"This is what happened: About half a month ago, the Allies attacked one of our strategic points. We had repelled the attack and were preparing for a counterstrike when these two individuals breached our defenses. After a fierce battle, our soldiers were nearly wiped out, and we lost the strategic point inexplicably.

A week ago, the Allies attacked another base, and the same scenario played out. Two individuals broke into the base, and we lost it.

According to the surviving soldiers, these two individuals were impossible to kill. Our weapons had no effect on them, and they could annihilate everyone in the base with their bare hands.

Two days ago, another base was attacked, and the survivors gave the same account."

After William's explanation, Dr. Berkowitz's heart raced, and he hurriedly asked, "What do these two individuals look like?"

William shook his head. "I don't know. All I know is that one of them can create bone spurs from the cracks in his fingers."

Dr. Berkowitz was overjoyed; he already knew who these two individuals were.

It's truly fortuitous that they came to my door.

He had been pondering how to acquire Wolverine's self-healing factor, and now they had come right to him.

Chapter 21: Beast

The sunlight filtered through the iron bars above, casting a touch of warmth into the dark and damp cell.

A harsh grinding sound echoed through the room.

Victor, with his strong build and fierce eyes, dug his nails into the bluestone floor out of boredom. He had managed to dig a small hole into the ground.

At this rate, given enough time, it wouldn't be difficult to dig out three bedrooms and a living room.

Though not as powerful as Victor, James, who was also well-built, opened his eyes impatiently. "Victor, do you still plan on digging a tunnel to escape?"

Victor retracted his hand casually and pointed at the collar around his neck. "With this thing, even if we dig out, we can't leave."

"Now that you understand, can you keep quiet?"

James was at a loss for words, realizing that arguing was futile and wishing for some peace.

"Isn't this boring? Manicure."

As soon as Victor finished speaking, a voice came from above.

"If you're bored, how about doing something for me?"

James and Victor looked up simultaneously.

A somewhat bald officer gazed down at them with disdain.

Colonel Claude looked at the two prisoners at his feet and was reminded of his triumphant image at the investiture ceremony. A proud smile spread across his face.

In his plan, these two would be thrilled to see him, becoming his most loyal subordinates and helping him achieve great success.

Because only he could save them now.

Result...

James and Victor rolled their eyes.

"Victor, did you hear a dog barking just now?"

Victor tilted his head and joked, "Dog? No, I only saw a little mouse—oh, a little bald mouse."

"That dog is also a little bald." James seemed to disagree with Victor's comparison. "The mouse isn't that big, and mice aren't bald."

"Who says mice can't be bald? Isn't there one out there?"

Victor raised his hand and pointed to the top of his head.

James looked up, leaned back, and made an exaggerated expression. "Oh, there really is a big bald rat."

Brigadier General Claude, listening to the banter, turned pale with anger and stamped his feet fiercely.

Bang~

"James, I understand you have grievances, but I have my reasons." Crouching down, Claude forced a smile. "But if you agree to one thing, I can let you go."

Upon hearing Claude's attempt at justification, Victor stood up, his face a mask of anger, baring his teeth and revealing his pointed fangs.

"Victor."

After glancing at James, Victor remained silent and retreated into the shadows.

"Colonel Claude, if you release us, will you still imprison us again?" James asked, looking at Claude above, his tone calm.

Claude composed himself and put on a sincere expression.

"I think you misunderstand, James. Your abilities are well-known. You have made significant contributions to the Allied Forces. Without you, we might have been the only failed unit in the Allied Forces." Claude praised the two of them and acknowledged their contributions before changing the subject. "But you are too special. Everyone is afraid of you. Although your achievements are undeniable, we are an army—a collective. I can't only think about one individual; I need to consider everyone's feelings."

"So, this is what you had in mind for us?"

With a crashing sound, James raised his hands and stretched them into the sunlight. The cold iron chains glistened in the light.

"I need to give everyone an explanation." Claude glanced at James apologetically and then reiterated his earlier suggestion. "But if you agree to one thing, I can let you go. What do you think?"

"We agree."

Victor suddenly spoke from the shadows.

"Victor, you still believe him?" James was incredulous.

"James, do you want to spend the rest of your life in this dark and damp place?"

Victor's words convinced James with just one sentence.

Claude's face lit up with a proud smile. As expected, no one could resist the temptation of freedom.

******

Puff~

Sharp bone spurs pierced from behind the enemy. The soldier, bleeding and vomiting, glanced fearfully at the man with a ferocious face before collapsing.

Boom boom~

Tu tu tu tu~

Explosions and gunfire erupted continuously.

The enemy's weapons were more advanced and better equipped than the Allied forces', so logically, they should have had an overwhelming advantage.

However, in the face of James and Victor, the enemy's weapons lost their effectiveness.

The two men broke through the enemy's defenses with relentless artillery fire and delivered brutal blows to the enemy's midsection.

James and Victor drew most of the enemy's firepower, allowing the Allies to advance quickly. Although the enemy had superior equipment, they were outnumbered by the Allies.

In close combat, the sheer number of Allied troops proved effective.

"Hahaha~ Lieutenant James, Lieutenant Victor, you are incredible."

Claude excitedly patted James and Victor on the shoulders.

Since persuading these two formidable individuals to work for him, Claude's troops had reversed their fortunes, achieving great success by destroying seven enemy bases within a month.

Just a month ago, his troops had been defeated by the mysterious The Wehrmacht army.

If the enemy had not been limited in numbers, his troops would have been defeated long ago, and he himself would have faced court-martial.

Now, however, things were different. Not only had he regained what was lost, but he had also dismantled seven of the enemy's bases in succession. This accomplishment alone made it fitting for him to earn a star on his epaulet.

All this was due to his discerning eye and ability to tame two formidable warriors.

"Claude, when will you fulfill your promise?"

James was not particularly thrilled by his superior's praise. Since the two had revealed their abilities, they had been ostracized in the camp. Each time they charged, it was just the two of them facing machine gunfire and artillery bombardment, often sustaining severe injuries.

Although they couldn't die, they still experienced pain.

James was tired of this constant, dangerous battle.

"Haha, my friend, don't worry. I will definitely fulfill my promise." Claude affectionately stepped forward and put his arm around James' shoulders, leading him toward his command tent.

Entering the camp, they were met with a large map covered in red lines.

In front of the map, Claude pointed to a prominent mark. "You just need to help me capture this location, and I will fulfill my promise."

James and Victor exchanged glances and nodded. "We hope the Colonel will keep his promise."

Claude smiled broadly. "Of course, I won't break my promise."

As James and Victor left the camp, Claude's expression suddenly darkened, replaced by a disdainful smile. He spoke to his adjutant, Bud, "Bud, what should be done if a dog is disobedient?"

The adjutant named Bud smiled and replied, "Sir, I've never raised a dog, but I have a distant relative who works in a circus. He told me that no matter how ferocious a beast is, it will become obedient under its master's whip."

"Really?" Claude's smile grew cold.

Let James and Victor go?

Was Claude foolish?

That would mean denying himself two stars on his shoulders in the future.

Hearing that a new super soldier had been created in the rear, Claude could hardly contain his amusement.

The real super soldier was in his own hands. Captain America was just a diversion.

Claude had almost faced court-martial due to his repeated defeats. In desperation, he could only temporarily placate the two with false promises.

Now that the crisis was over, it was time to show them who the real master was.

---

Chapter 22 Fly~ You Can't Fly Anymore!

In Claude's plan, this attack would be as devastating as before, adding another triumph to his record.

With James and Victor, these two invincible warriors, acting as the spearhead, no position or base was beyond their reach.

So much so that he disregarded the fact that his troops were already exhausted after prolonged combat.

Indeed, the battle unfolded as he anticipated.

Although the Allied forces were not as well-equipped as the enemy and faced supply shortages, with James and Victor drawing fire and leading the charge, the Allied forces easily breached the enemy's defenses.

After James and Victor infiltrated the base, the once formidable imperial army did not crumble as swiftly as before but engaged in fierce street fighting with the Axis.

Wherever James and Victor went, they cleared the way without getting entangled, setting various traps and obstacles to impede their progress.

"Ah ~ these cowards."

Victor angrily tore apart a steel cable, his murderous aura intensifying, and the madness in his eyes almost consumed his sanity.

"Victor, calm down, I think something is wrong."

In contrast to Victor's frenzy, James remained much calmer.

However, Victor, nearly deranged, had little regard for this. He only wanted to vent his rage and kill.

"What's wrong with these cowards who only know how to run away?" The irate Victor once again ripped apart a stumbling rope and threw it down. "They only rely on these inferior gadgets."

As he finished speaking, a loud gunshot rang out. Victor recoiled, and a burst of blood erupted from behind him.

"Ah~"

The searing pain of the bullet piercing his body made Victor roar like a beast, his fierce eyes fixed coldly on the shooter lurking in the shadows.

His powerful leg muscles exploded with unparalleled force. The body leaped into the air, his hands stretched forward, and he pounced with a standard tiger leap.

"Victor~wait~"

Before James could say anything, Victor had already charged out.

Unable to stop Victor and sensing something amiss, James, despite his concerns, gritted his teeth and followed.

When the Hydra soldier with the black gun saw the two men rushing, he calmly holstered his gun, shot them a provocative glance, then turned and fled deeper into a passage.

"Asshole, stop."

The furious Victor roared and sped forward on all fours.

"Victor, wait~"

James shouted weakly from behind, shaking his head helplessly as he followed Victor into the dark passage.

Just as they vanished into the passage, two figures emerged from a corner on the second floor.

"The bait has taken the hook. Notify Commander William, and we can commence our action."

"Yes, doctor."

...

Meanwhile, the Allied forces had been making steady progress and had become quite confident.

Although the enemy resistance was fierce and they fought hard, the Allies had not suspected anything wrong.

Until...

Boom boom~

Chu tu tu tu~

"What the hell is this?"

An Allied soldier pointed behind him, screaming in horror.

A steel monstrosity, more than three times the size of a regular tank, emerged from the dense forest outside the base. Hundreds of Hydra soldiers advanced in layers, cutting off the Allied forces' retreat.

"Damn, it's an ambush."

The Allied forces soon realized they had been ambushed.

"Breakthrough~breakout~"

Boom~

Before he could finish his command, a cannonball exploded beside him, tearing him to shreds, and his remaining limbs were reduced to black ashes in the air.

The Hydra soldiers, who had been engaged in street fighting with the Allies, displayed remarkable combat prowess with the appearance of the steel monster.

Bang~

An Allied soldier was hurled five meters away by a Hydra soldier in a mask. Another Allied soldier, raising his gun to shoot, was swiftly silenced as the black shadow flashed, strangling his scream.

Another group of Allied soldiers inside the base were searching for enemies. As they rounded a corner, a figure emerged from the darkness, sending four or five Allied soldiers flying with screams.

This scene repeated both inside and outside the base. These mysterious soldiers were so fast and powerful that the Allies couldn't react. Their bullets missed entirely, and once in close quarters, they were injured or killed.

"What kind of monster is this?"

The surviving Allied troops, terrified by these elusive enemies, fled the base.

The unlucky ones screamed and vanished, while the fortunate ones escaped outside the base, only to find uniform enemy troops awaiting them.

At the same time, Victor, who had been charging recklessly, finally confronted the shooter with the black gun.

No~ It wasn't about catching up; the shooter was waiting, disdainful.

"Ho~ Go to hell."

Victor, seeming enraged, barreled out of the passage with a roar. He stomped hard on the ground, leaped into the air, and advanced with his sharp claws gleaming coldly.

There was a loud bang.

James, who was right behind, saw the emotionless man punch Victor in the head, sending Victor flying faster and crashing into him.

With a groan of pain, James staggered back several steps before steadying himself.

"Victor, are you okay?"

"I'm fine." Victor shook his head, struggling to rise from James's support, and eyed the tall figure opposite him warily. "Be careful; that guy is formidable."

Victor had now recovered from his fury.

"There's something off about that guy."

James, from the start, remained calm.

Following James's advice, Victor noticed that something was indeed unusual about their opponent.

The man had not spoken a word since his ambush, and it was the perfect moment to strike, yet he stood motionless.

If not for the cold, ruthless gaze behind the mask, Victor would have thought the man was dead.

James surveyed the environment and found that they were in what seemed like a courtyard. The surrounding walls were at least five meters high, with passages extending in all directions.

Explosions, screams, and cries emanated from the passages, adding to the eerie atmosphere.

"This place is strange; let's move."

James, increasingly uneasy, stepped forward, grasped Victor's hand, and attempted to pull him away.

"I~"

Duang~Duang~

Suddenly, a dull, loud noise erupted in the passage, and the explosions and screams were abruptly silenced. The surroundings were eerily quiet except for their rapid breathing.

James and Victor, seasoned warriors, instinctively stood back to back. Three sharp bone claws extended from James's hands, while Victor's fingers formed claws to shield them.

"Proceed."

A strange man's voice echoed from the courtyard.

The two looked up to see~

Seven or eight dark figures dropping from above.

Thump~

Despite their differing appearances, all had cold faces and emotionless eyes, like mechanical beings.

The figure who had been standing still with a mask removed it, revealing the same expression as those who had just descended.

In this situation, James and Victor would be fools if they didn't understand what was happening.

"One, two, three...ten, ten people, Vic~"

James attempted to discuss with Victor, but the newcomers offered no chance to catch their breath.

The ten figures charged at them in seemingly random order.

Victor, unable to hold back any longer, roared and surged forward, closely followed by James, who charged in the opposite direction.

The brothers, having relied on each other for years, shared a remarkable synergy.

Bang bang~

James's back collided with something hard, and he turned to see.

"Victor, why are you back?"

"Aren't you back too?" Victor spat, his expression growing fiercer. "Damn, these bastards are so strong."

"Strength doesn't guarantee survival, Victor. Are you ready?" James also showed his resolve and roared.

Their decades of understanding were perfectly illustrated in this moment. Without any further direction, James flipped and faced Victor. Victor gripped James's hands, roared, and threw him with all his might, propelling him out.

Although the courtyard was five meters high, neither was ordinary. With Victor's strength, James soared to the top of the courtyard.

As James neared the exit of the courtyard, he saw three cold barrels—two large and one small—and a man smiling at him.

James's eyes widened in horror. He had seen this weapon before, but only in the hands of the The Wehrmacht .

M30 shotgun.

"Fuck me."

Bang~

Dozens of steel pellets nearly hit James's face. The massive impact sent his body flying in two directions.

His head was thrown back, while his feet remained airborne.

A second shot followed swiftly.

Bang~

Not a single shot was wasted. James endured what he shouldn't have, taking both 12-gauge shotgun blasts.

"Fly, you can't fly anymore!"

Before James succumbed to unconsciousness, a mocking voice reached his ears.

---

Chapter 23: Winter Soldier?

Ten super soldiers take on Wolverine and Sabretooth.

Who wins and who loses?

The answer is—

Crush.

Although James and Victor have self-healing factors, they can trade injuries for injuries and lives for lives without any rivals.

However, fighting is not like a reckless man who stabs me once and I stab you again.

James and Victor are strong, but not so strong that they are helpless. These soldiers injected with super serum can crush the two of them in all aspects, regardless of strength, speed, or reaction, as long as they do not trade their lives for their lives. Given the opportunity, taking care of the two mutants was just a matter of fun.

What's more, James was hit in the face by two 12-caliber shotguns. The impact of the King of Melee could not be overshadowed. Even when he was tied into a rice dumpling with iron chains, James' head was still dizzy.

Overwhelmed by equipment and equipped with super soldiers, the Allied forces were almost defeated at first touch, with most of the casualties and losses. Most of the survivors were captured, and only some stragglers were able to escape.

When Colonel Claude received the battle report, his feet softened and he collapsed on the ground.

He knew he was finished.

On the other side, even though he was tied up, Victor was still unconvinced and stared at Dr. Norbert Berkowitz on the patio with a pair of fierce eyes.

"I will definitely kill you."

Dr. Norbert Berkowitz twitched the corners of his mouth in disdain, raised his index finger and moved it back and forth: "Teach him how to be a prisoner."

A super soldier found an iron rod and pointed it at Victor's head.

Bang bang bang~

After a burst of beatings, Victor fell to the ground with blood on his face.

"Dr. Berkowitz, this is my very important experiment. If I beat him to death, will you be responsible?"

Dr. Zola, who was only as tall as Dr. Norbert Berkowitz's chest, walked out from behind Dr. Norbert Berkowitz and scolded him arrogantly.

If it weren't for the inappropriate timing, Dr. Norbert Berkowitz would have really wanted to slap this short winter melon in the face.

MD, who worked hard and had great brains, lost a lot of brain cells. As a result, this guy reaped the benefits and reaped the rewards. It's no wonder that Dr. Norbert Berkowitz has a good impression of him.

He thought that after handing over the super serum (special version), Schmidt's crisis of confidence in him would be lifted.

Unexpectedly, Schmidt turned around and handed the super serum to Dr. Zola, and Dr. Norbert Berkowitz was not allowed to participate in subsequent clinical experiments.

In Schmidt's words: "Doctors don't have to waste their energy on these little things."

It's such a trivial matter, aren't you just afraid that you might tamper with yourself during the experiment?

Now Dr. Norbert Berkowitz's position in Hydra is extremely awkward. He is nominally the head of the Second Science Department, but he is actually a bare-bones commander. Apart from Erik, he doesn't even have an assistant.

But his status in Hydra is very high, second only to Schmidt, Zola, and William. He is the fourth figure, but he does not have the power to match his status.

This time too, after Hydra failed to capture James and Victor several times, Dr. Norbert Berkowitz volunteered to plan the operation.

The result was remarkable. Not only did they capture James and Victor, who had caused heavy losses to Hydra, but they also almost completely annihilated this arrogant and ignorant ally.

The only pity is that the result of this victory has little to do with Dr. Norbert Berkowitz.

Whether it was a prisoner or two mutants, he had no right to dominate.

After the battle, he had to return to the Hydra base in the Alps to make a super serum (special version) for Schmidt.

"Dr. Zola, I leave this person to you now. Even if he dies, it's none of my business."

No longer paying attention to Zola's ugly expression, Dr. Norbert Berkowitz walked out expressionlessly.

The battle is over, and he has no reason to stay here anymore.

But it was impossible for him to give up the self-healing factor right under his nose.

Before leaving, Dr. Norbert Berkowitz found William.

At this time, William was in the combat command room looking at the report of this battle.

Seeing Dr. Norbert Berkowitz walk in, William's expression changed, and then he pretended to be nonchalant and waved all his men away, stood up from the chair and greeted Dr. Norbert Berkowitz.

"Dr. Berkowitz, what are you doing here?"

I was still a doctor before, but now I call him by his first name.

Faced with William's obvious behavior of burning bridges, Dr. Norbert Berkowitz didn't care. It was an exchange of interests, so there was no betrayal.

Sitting down in William's seat, Dr. Norbert Berkowitz looked through the battle reports on the table and made his purpose clear.

"William, I want to make a deal with you."

"Dr. Berkowitz, I don't think we have anything to trade."

William's expression was ugly, and he felt that Dr. Norbert Berkowitz was threatening him.

"Ten serums."

Dr. Norbert Berkowitz didn't want to talk nonsense to him. He came here to be stared at by many eyes and didn't have much time.

Hiss~

William took a breath of air and his eyes flickered, but in the end, he just sneered: "Dr. Berkowitz, I don't accept bad checks. The twenty serums have been used up, and the latest batch of materials for making the serum will not be shipped until a month later. What do you want to trade with me?"

"Who told you there are only twenty serums?"

Dr. Norbert Berkowitz looked at William as if he were an idiot.

Regardless of Dr. Norbert Berkowitz's humiliating gaze, William stared in disbelief: "You~you..."

Slowly flipping through the battle report in front of him, Dr. Norbert Berkowitz didn't even raise his head: "I made thirty serums from the last batch of materials, but you just thought I made twenty."

"How is it possible? I saw this with my own eyes." William looked like he had been struck by a ghost.

As he said, Schmidt, Zola, and he were all present when Dr. Norbert Berkowitz made the serum. They watched with their own eyes as Dr. Norbert Berkowitz used up all the materials, but in the end only twenty serums were produced.

As a result, Dr. Norbert Berkowitz now told him that he still had ten super serums on hand.

He couldn't believe that Dr. Norbert Berkowitz could secretly make ten serums without being discovered in front of everyone.

Do you really think they are blind?

"Believe it or not, I really do."

Dr. Norbert Berkowitz would not tell William that making the serum did not require those materials. Making the serum was not difficult at all for him.

Just let him guess slowly.

"How about it? Do you want to do this deal?"

"Do you really have the serum?" William didn't believe Dr. Norbert Berkowitz.

"When the time comes, I'll pay you and deliver the goods. If you don't get the serum, you don't have to give it to me."

After seeing it, William was moved: "What do you want?"

"The blood of those two people."

"It's that simple?"

William looked at Dr. Norbert Berkowitz suspiciously. He naturally knew which two people Dr. Norbert Berkowitz was talking about.

Because of this, he suspected that it was actually very simple for Dr. Norbert Berkowitz to get their blood. Although Zola didn't deal with him, he wouldn't reject him for this. He didn't need to trade with him at all.

Dr. Norbert Berkowitz's hand while flipping through the battle report suddenly stopped, his eyes stayed at a certain place for a moment, and he raised his head to look at William: "I don't want other people to know."

It was not a reason, but it was enough to convince William.

He didn't care why Dr. Norbert Berkowitz didn't want others to know. To him, these ten serums that were not in the records were more important.

"Okay, deal."

After reaching a deal, Dr. Norbert Berkowitz immediately stood up from his chair.

"Hopefully when I leave I'll see what I want."

"Don't worry, doctor, you can see it tonight."

This matter was too simple for William, and there was no need to waste any efforts.

"Of course, I trust you, Commander William."

Dr. Norbert Berkowitz reached out and shook William's hand, then turned and left.

Walking out of the combat command room, Dr. Norbert Berkowitz raised a mysterious smile on his lips: "I hope you can still live to use them."

Just now, he saw a familiar name on the battle report on the table.

James Buchanan Barnes.

Chapter 24: The Opportunity Comes

The transaction between Norbert Berkowitz and William went smoothly.

Early the next morning, Norbert left the frontline base with the blood of the two chief officers, James and Victor.

Bucky has appeared, and Captain America must be not far behind. He must speed up the analysis of mutant genes.

Returning to the Hydra base in the Alps, Norbert locked himself in a laboratory and began analyzing the mutant genes of James and Victor.

After more than a month of analyzing the mutant genes, Norbert discovered that the progress of the analysis was closely related to the mutant genes' abilities.

The stronger the ability of the analyzed gene sample, the slower the analysis progress and the greater the consumption.

Conversely, the weaker the ability of the mutant gene, the faster the analysis speed and the smaller the consumption.

At the same time, Norbert also discovered that reading, especially related books, can increase the speed of analyzing genes and reduce his own consumption.

Additionally, mutant genes with weak parsing capabilities can also accelerate the parsing speed of other mutant genes.

With this discovery, Norbert decided to set aside the analysis of Eric's mutant genes and focus on several previously obtained mutant genes.

Compared to Eric's mutant genes, Keira's mutant genes, which have memory flashbacks, and the mutant genes obtained in Auschwitz, which can release energy shields and laser rays from ten fingers, are simpler to analyze.

It took less than a month to complete the analysis of these three mutant genes.

After finishing the analysis of these mutant genes, and reading relevant books daily, Eric's mutant gene analysis progressed much faster. The progress made in ten days was now equivalent to the previous month's work.

However, Norbert set aside his analysis of Eric's mutant genes once again.

Compared to Eric's abilities, Wolverine and Sabretooth's self-healing factors are of much higher priority.

Although the self-healing factor is not as powerful as Eric's abilities, it significantly benefits Norbert's future development.

The Tesseract is still displayed in Dr. Zola's laboratory, and Norbert has been coveting it for too long.

From time travel to now, Norbert has had countless opportunities to analyze the Tesseract, but he never dared to do so.

The visit to the mysterious book made him very wary of analyzing extraordinary powers.

Even with the super serum, he remains a mortal human, merely a bit stronger than an ordinary person. A book almost killed Norbert; let alone the Infinity Stones, which are considered top-tier extraordinary items in the Marvel Universe.

He wanted to, but he didn't dare.

The situation with the self-healing factor is different.

In the movies, Wolverine's self-healing factor is able to withstand the Phoenix Force outburst.

Even if he's not that strong in his real state, having someone half as strong as him can still make Norbert bolder.

And with the self-healing factor, Norbert no longer has to suffer from Schmidt.

Holding James' blood sample, Norbert imagined a scene in his mind.

He stood in front of Schmidt, looking at him provocatively.

"Come on, come here!"

"If you can stab me to death, I lose!"

Arrogant, domineering, and begging to be beaten...

Forget it, don't dwell on it. This is a bit over the top.

Pushing the images out of his mind, Norbert focused on the blood sample in his hand and began the analysis.

******

More than a month passed in a flash. A new batch of materials for making serum had arrived, and Norbert's life returned to normal.

He entered the laboratory at six o'clock every morning and spent an hour making two super serums (special versions). During the rest of the time, Eric trained his abilities while he slept. In reality, he was analyzing the self-healing factors, finding relevant books to read, and resuming analysis after regaining strength. After dinner at six o'clock in the evening, he followed Eric to train fighting skills until midnight.

In more than a month, the analysis progress of the self-healing factor was halfway through, getting closer to Norbert's goal.

August 23rd.

The analysis of the self-healing factor had reached its final stage, and despite Norbert's calm demeanor, he couldn't help but feel a bit excited.

In the past few days, he had even given up his nightly fighting training with Eric, locking himself in the laboratory 24/7, barely sleeping, to complete the analysis of the self-healing factor as soon as possible.

Bang bang bang—

The rapid knock on the door woke Norbert, who was engrossed in analyzing the self-healing factor.

After wiping the sweat from his forehead, Norbert collapsed weakly on the sofa and rested for a moment before dragging his exhausted body toward the laboratory door.

As expected, Eric was at the door. As soon as Norbert opened it, Eric hurried inside.

"Doctor, something serious has happened."

"How serious? Has Hydra taken over the world, or is it Wolverine coming?"

Norbert rolled his eyes helplessly. For him now, nothing in the world is as pressing as the analysis of the self-healing factor.

Waving his hand weakly, Norbert turned to return to the sofa, but his legs gave way, and he fell forward.

Fortunately, Eric was quick to catch him.

"Doctor, what happened to you?" Eric exclaimed.

Eric then realized that Norbert looked completely different. Norbert had been injected with the perfect version of the super serum. Although his physique wasn't as exaggerated as Schmidt or other super soldiers who had been injected with the special version, his figure was still strong. He didn't look like a scientist.

Now, Norbert was as thin as a bamboo pole, with sunken eye sockets, protruding cheekbones, and an exhausted appearance. He looked like a terminally ill patient if not for his sharp and powerful eyes, which even convinced Eric that he might be on the brink of death.

"It's nothing, I'm just a bit tired." Norbert downplayed his condition and asked, "Didn't you say something significant happened? What is it?"

After helping Norbert sit on the sofa, Eric explained.

"Doctor, the base where Commander William is stationed was captured by the Allies. Only Dr. Zola and Commander William managed to escape with a team."

Norbert's eyes flashed: "What exactly happened?"

Eric shook his head: "I don't know the specifics. The commander was furious when he heard, and the information has only recently spread. The exact details might not be clear until Commander William and the others return."

Norbert didn't press further; Eric would surely provide more details when available.

He leaned back on the sofa, propping his chin with his right hand, deep in thought.

According to the timeline, it should be the plot of Captain America: The First Avenger now. Captain America, who has been a background character for months, must have arrived at the front line. This matter is likely the work of Captain America Rogers.

Norbert had anticipated this when he saw the name James Buchanan Barnes.

As Rogers' close friend, once Rogers learns that Bucky has been captured, he will certainly risk his life to rescue him.

However, Norbert was puzzled. Due to his arrival, Rogers and Schmidt are not the only super soldiers in this world.

William has a total of twenty super soldiers, including the ten serums he traded with Norbert, making it thirty.

Thirty against one, even if a few were attacked by Rogers, there were still more than twenty left, yet they couldn't kill even one Rogers? They were also picked up by a group of people.

The protagonist's halo is ridiculously strong!

Or maybe shield is too strong . Since there are mutants in this world , maybe the shield is made of proto-adamantium instead of Vibranium.

But since it happened, it is true no matter how outrageous it seems.

Norbert estimated that most of William's super soldiers were likely wiped out, with only one or two left at most, otherwise they wouldn't be so embarrassed and fleeing in such a hurry.

No wonder Schmidt was furious. With only forty super soldiers, now half of them were lost; it's understandable he would be angry.

Norbert felt that even if William and Zola returned, their situation would not improve.

Suddenly, Norbert smiled.

Isn't this your opportunity?

Hydra seems very powerful now, but it has a critical flaw.

That is, a severe shortage of elite troops.

These elite troops are not merely elite in the literal sense.

Their weapons and equipment are among the best in the world, but their training is also rigorous. They must be proficient in combat skills and undergo a series of brainwashing. Only those willing to sacrifice for Hydra can become part of the elite force.

There are many other people in Hydra, but they are all mediocre. They excel in intrigue and subterfuge but are poor in direct combat.

Although Schmidt is a military expert, as the commander of Hydra, he cannot command every battle.

Colonel Villa, the only Hydra member from the regular army, was buried in Auschwitz by William.

Others...

Ha ha.

Just look at the results this time.

The base that was blocked this time was one of Hydra's most important bases. The elite troops there accounted for one-third of the entire Hydra force, and half of the super soldiers. It can be said that the losses were significant.

The loss of one-third of the elite troops was undoubtedly a severe blow to Schmidt's ambition to unify the world.

Weapons and equipment can be replaced, but cultivating elite troops takes time.

The entire war situation is not only unfavorable to the German Army but also to Hydra. With one-third of the elite troops lost, it's a miracle Schmidt hasn't gone mad.

The only thing that can help Schmidt quickly organize an elite team in a short time...

"Eric, go out and stand guard. No matter who comes later, don't open the door. If Commander William arrives, have him wait."

Norbert stood up with his weak body and sent the confused Eric out.

Then he quickly returned to the sofa and closed his eyes.

The analysis of the self-healing factor had reached its final stage.

If he succeeded, he would gain the best healing factor. At that time, Norbert would be able to become the strongest person in this world, with a fighting strength comparable to or even surpassing Schmidt. With the best healing factor, he could easily handle various crises.

But if he fails, he will lose the opportunity to grasp this power.

No one knows the consequences of failure.

Chapter 25: Blueprint

As the familiar blue fluorescence illuminated the room, Dr. Norbert Berkowitz, nearly exhausted, let out a sigh of relief.

In his field of vision, the 3D image of the gene with the double helix structure was surrounded by a dense array of formulas. The formulas, glowing with blue fluorescence, made the gene image in the center begin to rotate slowly, eventually spinning faster and faster.

The formulas in his vision seemed to exert some kind of gravitational pull, moving quickly to form a vast double helix, which was then gradually absorbed by the sample gene.

When the last formula was drawn into the sample gene, the entire double helix structure of the gene emitted a bright blue light, and a massive influx of information surged into Dr. Berkowitz's mind.

"Hmm~"

With a groan, Dr. Berkowitz covered his head and curled up on the sofa, his body twitching involuntarily.

After a moment, he regained his composure, leaned back on the sofa, and sighed deeply, his eyes sparkling with ecstasy.

The information now absorbed in his mind left the self-healing factor devoid of any secrets for Dr. Berkowitz.

Although the analysis of the self-healing factor was complete, the work was far from over.

Analysis was only the first step. It allowed Dr. Berkowitz to understand the structure and manufacturing method of the self-healing factor. To equip himself with such a factor, the next crucial step was derivation.

In ancient times, the Celestials had implanted mutant genes into human ancestors, but that did not mean all humans possessed mutant genes.

Mutant gene carriers are still a minority, and the vast majority of humans are ordinary.

Dr. Berkowitz, being an ordinary human without mutant genes, faced only one viable path to acquire mutant abilities: genetic modification experiments, similar to those seen in the X-Men films.

While such modifications might not make one a natural mutant, they could still be considered mutants.

However, Dr. Berkowitz had no intention of pursuing this method.

As the saying goes, those without foresight are bound to face imminent troubles.

Transforming oneself into a mutant isn't particularly difficult. The real issue is that this is a mixed Marvel universe, and Dr. Berkowitz could not be certain if there would be Sentinel weapons designed to target mutants in the future.

If the future of mutants mirrored that of the "Days of Future Past" scenario, transforming into a mutant would be tantamount to courting death.

He wasn't foolish enough to risk that.

Dr. Berkowitz desired mutant genetic abilities, but he did not want to become a mutant himself.

Therefore, his only option was to pursue mutation through means similar to those of Spider-Man and Hulk.

How did Spider-Man and Hulk achieve their mutations?

There were many uncertainties involved, but a common factor was that both the spider that bit Peter Parker and the gamma rays that transformed Bruce Banner into the Hulk were derived from the same project.

This project was known as the human body enhancement project, or super soldier serum.

Since the successful example of Captain America, the military and government of the USA have continuously tried to replicate the super serum, though they have never succeeded.

Though Hulk and Spider-Man's abilities involved specific factors, their existence almost certainly stemmed from the military and government's research into super serums.

At this point, Dr. Berkowitz's plan was clear.

He intended to use the perfect version of the super serum as a blueprint and combine it with the analyzed self-healing factors to create a new serum.

By doing so, he hoped to acquire mutant abilities through genetic mutation, similar to Spider-Man and Hulk.

Not only that, if this plan succeeded, Dr. Berkowitz had even grander ambitions.

The god-like figure next door(Superman), if considered carefully, possessed abilities that were essentially a collection of various mutant powers.

Heat vision, for instance—much like Cyclops' lasers.

Freeze breath compared to Iceman's powers?

Super iron body—Colossus might have inferior defense, but with the self-healing factor, it would likely be comparable.

Super speed—Quicksilver's abilities are not to be underestimated.

Can one grow stronger from prolonged sun exposure?

He could learn from the Black Emperor's energy absorption.

Biological force field? Is Magneto's power any less?

Besides these, there's Professor X's...

Yes, this was Dr. Berkowitz's ambition.

He wanted to become a god on Earth.

Forget about the Avengers; even if Thanos arrived without the Infinity Stones, he would still have to acknowledge Dr. Berkowitz as a formidable force.

As for the Celestial group—

That was still too distant.

The foundation of all blueprints was the super serum, and the cornerstone was the self-healing factor.

With money comes the need for life to spend it.

Dr. Berkowitz's idea was audacious but also fraught with danger.

Scientific experiments are filled with uncertainties. Who knows how the super serum will behave once integrated with mutant genes and what unforeseen changes might occur after injection? If something went wrong, the self-healing factor was Dr. Berkowitz's lifesaving code.

Even if there were unexpected changes, survival would offer hope.

Cherishing his life after being revived, Dr. Berkowitz valued it immensely.

The idea was brilliant, but whether it could be realized depended on practice.

Though his body was exhausted, Dr. Berkowitz's spirit remained high.

The image in his field of vision began to shift. The perfect version of the super serum formula appeared on the left, while the analyzed double helix gene map of the self-healing factor was completed on the right.

The derivation began.

The genetic diagram started to disintegrate into formulas from the left end and slowly merged into the perfect super serum formula on the left, giving rise to new fusion formulas below.

Dr. Berkowitz watched the new formulas with a mixture of anticipation and anxiety, clasping his hands together and muttering to himself.

"Brother Cheat System~~Big Daddy~Don't let me down, don't let me down…"

******

Allied camp in Italy.

A graceful and poised officer in standard military uniform, with shoulder-length short hair and a striking presence, stood at the gate of the camp, gazing out anxiously and expectantly.

"Agent Carter, please go back. It has been several days. If we had received any news, he might have…"

Colonel Phillips approached Carter's side and sighed.

"No, Colonel, no news is good news, and I trust him."

Even Carter felt a tinge of uncertainty at her own words.

Colonel Phillips was about to speak when a burst of cheers erupted from outside the camp. Carter rushed forward with an ecstatic expression.

Phillips looked up, a relieved smile on his face.

"Colonel."

Rogers strode up to Phillips and saluted.

Phillips returned the salute, and his smile was uncontainable. If not for his position as commander, he might have laughed as heartily as the others.

"Rogers, thank you for your hard work. That's~"

Patting Rogers on the shoulder, Phillips pointed to the armored vehicle behind him, which was almost three times the size of a tank, along with the soldiers following.

Due to Colonel Claude's failed command, the Allies had suffered significant losses. He had been dismissed and was under investigation.

Phillips had temporarily taken command of this straggler and had not handed it over to Claude. Although he had reviewed the battle report, he did not personally know the soldiers, leaving him somewhat uncertain.

"Colonel, those are the captured soldiers of the 107th Regiment. The success of this operation depended entirely on them."

Rogers emphasized the crucial role of these captured soldiers in the operation, particularly mentioning his close friend Bucky.

"Alright, I'll listen to your detailed report later this evening and take a few of them with me." Colonel Phillips nodded affirmatively and then announced loudly to the surroundings, "Come on, soldiers, cheer for your heroes!"

"Roar~"

With Phillips' approval, the entire military camp erupted in celebration.

However, amidst this warm atmosphere, two individuals stood silently outside the crowd, observing the festivities with indifference.

They too had returned with the prisoners, but no one showed them a warm reception. Instead, they seemed quite distant.

"Damn it, James, I'm really not happy."

Sharp fangs protruded from the corners of Victor's mouth.

"Victor, remember our purpose and don't cause trouble."

James took out a cigar, placed it in his mouth, and appeared unconcerned.

"Heh, I know, but I'm genuinely upset."

Victor's gaze was fixed on the crowd with a fierce murderous intent. If James hadn't been by his side, Victor might have lost control.

Chapter 26: Information about the Super Serum

Late at night, following the grand welcome ceremony, Rogers brought Bucky, James, and Victor to the combat command camp.

"Colonel."

"Please, everyone, have a seat."

Phillips, with a pipe in his mouth, showed no airs of superiority and warmly invited Rogers and the others to sit.

"Captain, how did the mission go?"

Rogers had been acting as Captain America for several months, and the title had become commonly associated with him.

Hearing the colonel address him this way, Rogers looked slightly embarrassed. As a private, it felt awkward being called by the title usually reserved for a higher rank. He could only smile and reply, "It went well, thanks to everyone's support."

"Haha, Captain, don't be embarrassed. You are a hero."

Phillips could clearly see Rogers' discomfort, but he continued to use the title.

The recent defeat of the Allies had brought numerous adverse consequences, with low morale being just one of them. The news had caused a stir back home. At this stage, major battles were rare. A regiment had nearly been wiped out in minor skirmishes, but it still had a proud history—Army's 107th Infantry Regiment.

The pressure from above was intense, and it eventually reached Colonel Phillips.

Phillips had been trying to find a solution. Although his request to rebuild the 107th Infantry Regiment was not outright denied, there was no order to withdraw to the rear for rest. Rebuilding the 107th Infantry Regiment seemed a distant goal.

Fortunately, Rogers appeared and not only rescued the captured soldiers but also destroyed the enemy's military base and seized a large quantity of supplies and equipment.

The higher-ups were thrilled with the news from Phillips. The story was perfect for propaganda.

In a dire situation, a hero's appearance led to a dramatic turnaround, as if fate had prepared it just for them.

Heroes often emerge at the most critical moments to save the world.

If politicians couldn't recognize this opportunity, they'd deserve to be replaced.

Though Rogers was still a private, he was far from an ordinary one.

"Captain, you saved everyone. You deserve this title," Carter added, recognizing the importance of the moment.

Seeing Carter's reassuring gaze, Rogers felt affirmed. Her look spoke volumes more than words ever could.

Phillips took a puff from his pipe and exhaled a cloud of smoke. "Captain, we need a hero now. The world needs a hero, and the soldiers need spiritual support. I can't think of anyone else who fits that role."

Rogers' actions had received Phillips' highest approval.

"Brother, you don't need to refuse."

Bucky was also pleased for Rogers.

After hearing the support from everyone, Rogers finally relented.

"Alright, Colonel, I'll follow your lead."

Phillips and Carter exchanged smiles. With Rogers' agreement, their mission was nearly complete.

"By the way, Captain, please provide details of the battle so I can report to the higher-ups."

"Yes, Colonel."

Rogers instinctively started to stand, but Phillips motioned for him to remain seated.

"It doesn't need to be so formal," Phillips chuckled.

Rogers sat back down, smiled, and began recounting the rescue operation in detail.

The mission had been quite thrilling, with super soldiers unexpectedly appearing.

Rogers' initial infiltration went smoothly, but he encountered two super soldiers and had a fierce battle. Despite eliminating them, he exposed his presence.

During his fight with Hydra, Rogers accidentally stumbled into Dr. Zola's laboratory, where Zola was conducting experiments on James and Victor.

Seeing Rogers' intrusion, Dr. Zola fled, leaving Rogers to rescue James and Victor.

Victor and James, furious, attacked Zola, frightening him out of his wits. Without the super soldiers' intervention, Zola would have been torn apart by them.

Super soldiers were scarce compared to Wolverine and Sabretooth. If they hadn't fallen into a trap previously, they would have captured more easily.

Undeterred, a handful of super soldiers could not match the strength of Wolverine and Sabretooth and were swiftly defeated.

Fearful for his life, Zola recruited more super soldiers to combat the two.

A dozen super soldiers and two mutants engaged in a game of hide and seek in the complex Hydra base.

The mutants held off most of the super soldiers while Rogers successfully freed the captured Allied forces. Hundreds of Allied elites attacked separately and raided the Hydra base's weapon depot, launching an assault from outside.

Bucky was imprisoned separately as in the original story, and Rogers was captured by remaining super soldiers while searching for him.

After a fight, Rogers was defeated and fled.

During the escape, Rogers' hero's aura began to take effect, and he found Bucky by accident.

After rescuing Bucky, the two seized Hydra's weapons and coordinated their actions. Rogers acted as a human shield while Bucky fought from behind. The narrow passages prevented super soldiers from fully utilizing their advantage, and the two were victorious through split attacks.

The final blow was delivered by explosives set by the Allies during their escape.

James and Victor could not withstand the assault of over a dozen super soldiers. After being captured, they were severely punished.

At that moment, the explosives detonated, and the entire Hydra base was engulfed in flames. James and Victor reunited with Rogers and others, unharmed.

After hearing Rogers' report, Phillips asked solemnly, "Captain, are you saying there were super soldiers like you in that base?"

Rogers nodded. "Yes, but I sensed something was off about those individuals."

"They are super soldiers injected with the super serum," Bucky suddenly revealed.

"What?"

Phillips stood up abruptly, exchanging incredulous looks with Carter.

"Are you sure?"

Bucky shook his head and pointed at James and Victor. "I only overheard something while I was unconscious. They likely know more about it."

Phillips looked at James, who had been casually holding a cigar, and Victor, who was focused on his nails. "Lieutenant James, Lieutenant Victor, is what Sergeant Bucky said true?"

"Huh? You're asking me?" James, dazed, pointed at himself, while Victor continued to focus on his nails.

Phillips was exasperated. Were these two even paying attention?

After repeating his question, James tilted his head, appearing to think deeply.

"Well… it seems that's the case."

James' answer made Phillips' blood pressure rise, nearly causing him to curse.

He understood the importance of the super serum. With Dr. Erskine, the serum's developer, dead, finding more super soldiers in Hydra was crucial news. The higher-ups would undoubtedly be thrilled.

Just as Phillips was about to ask more, Victor suddenly looked up from his nails.

"James, what are you blabbering about? We should leave."

"Leave?"

Phillips was momentarily stunned and then remembered the two specific individuals mentioned in the report he had read.

"Wait, you can't leave."

Victor's intense, dangerous gaze fixed on Phillips. "Colonel Claude promised us we could leave after completing this mission."

"Colonel Claude has been taken for investigation due to his greed for credit. I'm the one making decisions here now."

Phillips showed no fear of Victor's glare.

"You dare to double-cross us?"

Victor's low growl made Rogers tense up.

"Hold on, Victor. Listen to what he has to say."

James stood in front of Victor, sensing something in Phillips' words.

"If you're willing to help me, you can leave after the task is done."

"Tch, do I need your permission to leave?" Victor said disdainfully, looking at James. "Let's go."

James hesitated but then followed Victor outside. Rogers reached out but did nothing.

"Will you spend your life as a deserter, always hiding, unable to face others, or will you leave with glory and live proudly? Do you not want to make a choice?" Phillips said calmly.

James froze, his intense gaze locked on Phillips. "What did you say?"

Phillips' words had clearly struck a chord with James, and even Victor paused.

Phillips smiled.

"I can ensure you live openly and proudly."

James and Victor exchanged looks and then returned to their seats.

"Colonel Phillips, what do you need us to do?"

"We'll discuss that later. For now, I want information about the super serum."

Phillips still needed to consult with his superiors about including the two men in the Howling Commandos plan. But if there was information about the super serum, the superiors would be unlikely to forgo these powerful assets.

"Super serum?"

James took a moment to think.

After a while, James looked up. "I overheard the little guy mumbling about it… Norb~et… It should be called that… The super serum developed was flawed. He mentioned developing a more perfect version but also criticized those injected with the serum for acting like fools and failing to adapt."

Victor nodded in agreement. "The little guy did say that."

"What else?" Phillips asked.

James shrugged. "That's all the little guy mentioned."

Seeing that no further useful information was forthcoming, Phillips fell into deep thought, holding his pipe.

"Norbert?"
