Chapter 3 - uncovering the past

As morning dawned, Stella, still weary from a restless night, faced Clever, who had arrived as promised. He held a photograph in his hand, which he finally revealed to her. "This is you and your parents," he said gently.

As soon as Stella touched the photo, memories long buried burst forth, and she recalled the traumatic event she had suppressed - her parents' murder before her eyes. Overwhelmed, she broke down in tears and retreated to a corner, overcome with grief.

Clever approached her with empathy. "I know this is hard for you, Stella. You're a strong woman, and few could bear this burden."

Stella sobbed, her voice cracking. "Even if I want to avenge them, I can't possibly fight my uncle. He has armies at his command, while I have nothing."

Clever's words were soft but resolute. "Believe in yourself, Stella. Your inner strength can overcome this. Have faith."

With that, he departed, promising to return the next day, leaving Stella to grapple with the resurfaced memories and her quest for justice.

As morning broke, Clever arrived, his eyes shining with determination. "I've found a way for you to enter the city, Stella. But I'm afraid Smith cannot accompany you."

Stella's heart raced as she considered the risks. "I'll come, but first, you must do something for me," she said, her voice firm.

Clever's response was immediate. "Anything for my queen."

Stella's gaze locked onto his. "There's a herb I need you to retrieve for me. My father's life depends on it."

Clever's curiosity was piqued. "What herb is that?"

Smith spoke up, "It's the rare 'Moonpetal'. Can you get it for us, Clever?"

Clever nodded. "Give me an hour, and I'll fetch it for you."

True to his word, Clever returned with the Moonpetal within the hour. Stella handed it to Smith, her eyes filled with hope. "Go, heal my father."

Smith's expression was resolute. "What shall I tell your mother?"

Stella's voice was steady. "Tell her I'll come back home."

With that, they parted ways, each facing their own destiny.

Finally, Stella arrived in the city, her eyes wide with wonder at its beauty and uniqueness. Clever whispered in her ear, "Welcome back home, my queen." But Stella stood in disbelief, her mind struggling to accept the reality of her return.

Clever nudged her playfully. "Snap out of it, let's go this way." He led her to his house, where he warned her, "On this mission we're about to embark on, don't trust anyone, including me."

Stella's eyes narrowed. "What's your plan, Clever?"

He smiled mischievously. "Bringing you to the city was my plan. Now that you're here, the first thing you need to do is hide your identity. We don't want the king to kill you too."

Stella's heart raced at the danger that lurked ahead.

Clever continued, "I'll go prepare something for you to eat. Rest now, we have a long journey ahead of us."

With that, he left her alone in the house, leaving Stella to ponder her situation and the uncertain fate that awaited her.

Clever burst back into the room, his face radiating joy. Stella's curiosity was piqued. "Why are you so happy, Clever?"

He beamed, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "Eat and rest now, my queen. I'll fill you in on the plan tomorrow. Just know that everything is falling into place."

Stella's exhaustion and hunger got the better of her, and she nodded, taking a bite of the food Clever had prepared. As she ate, Clever's enthusiasm was infectious, and she found herself feeling a glimmer of hope.

"Rest now, my queen," Clever repeated, his voice soft and soothing. "Tomorrow, we'll begin our journey to reclaim your rightful place on the throne."

With a full belly and a sense of anticipation, Stella surrendered to her fatigue, her dreams filled with visions of a brighter future.

"The Palace Awaits"

Stella woke up to find Clever already dressed and ready for the day. She quickly got dressed as well, and they sat down to eat breakfast together. The silence between them was palpable, but Stella finally broke it.

"We're going to the palace, aren't we?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Clever nodded. "Yes, we'll both be working there. But you have to be careful, Stella. Don't trust anyone, and don't reveal your identity to anyone."

Stella's heart raced as she nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. As they made their way to the palace, she couldn't help but notice the way people were being treated. Guards were pushing citizens around, and no one dared to speak out against it.

Stella's instincts urged her to say something, but Clever's warning glance kept her silent. She knew that if she spoke out, the king would find out about their plan, and her life would be in danger.

With a heavy heart, Stella continued on, her eyes fixed on the palace ahead. She knew that this was just the beginning of a dangerous game, but she was determined to see it through.

"The Palace and the Princess"

As Stella gazed upon the grand palace gates, a mix of emotions swirled within her. She had never imagined returning to this place, where her parents were murdered and she was exiled. Yet, here she was, determined to reclaim her rightful place on the throne.

Her attention was drawn to a young girl walking past her, and the guards bowed deeply in respect. However, the girl didn't even glance in their direction, her eyes fixed on some distant point. Stella's curiosity was piqued, and she turned to Clever for answers.

"Who is that girl?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Clever's eyes flicked towards the girl, and he replied, "That's your uncle's daughter, the princess. And for now, you'll be her personal maid."

Stella's mind raced with questions, but before she could ask any of them, Clever signaled her to bow as the princess approached. They both did, their heads lowered in respect, as the princess walked past them without even acknowledging their presence.

As they made their way to their quarters, Stella felt a sense of wonder and trepidation. She had never imagined serving as a maid in the very palace where she once lived as a princess. Yet, she knew this was just the beginning of her journey, and she was determined to see it through.

With a deep breath, Stella steeled herself for the challenges ahead. She would gather information, build alliances, and bide her time until the perfect moment to strike. The throne was within her reach, and she would stop at nothing to claim it.
