Marcus slid into the driver's seat of his black Audi RS7, while Samantha took the passenger side as usual and Kai stretched out in the back. He seemed to have cozied up to his spot in the backseat.
The familiar leather seats felt comforting even after the strange events of the other evening. As they pulled away from the safe house, the streetlights cast shifting patterns across the dashboard.
"So," Samantha turned slightly in her seat to look at Kai, "where were you all day? I realized I never asked."
Kai let out a small laugh, running a hand through his disheveled dark hair. "Would you believe me if I said I was sleeping?"
"Really?" Samantha's eyebrows rose. "The whole time?"
"Pretty much. Remember how I ducked out right after midnight?" Kai shifted, getting more comfortable. "After a full phase, especially one where I had to push my limits like the other night, we need serious recovery time. Food and sleep, lots of both."
