Samantha froze mid-step, her vampire hearing picking up more whispered fragments from inside the house.
"If she finds out what you just told me..." That was Kai's voice, rough with tension.
"She won't." Callum's reply was firm. "Not until we figure out a way around it."
Marcus's hand tightened on hers. He'd heard it too. Before they could retreat, a gust of wind carried their scents toward the house. The whispers stopped abruptly.
The front door opened, spilling warm light across the porch. Kai filled the doorway, his powerful werewolf frame casting a long shadow. His dark eyes found them immediately, a flash of guilt crossing his features before he masked it with a lazy grin.
"Welcome back, lovebirds." His gaze lingered on their disheveled appearance. "Had fun in the woods?"
Behind him, Callum emerged from the shadows of the hallway. His violet eyes held centuries of knowledge, and something in his stance spoke of burdens too heavy to bear.
