"We need to go home. Now." Marcus's voice cut through the whimsical atmosphere, his expression leaving no room for debate.
Kai opened his mouth, likely to suggest visiting another magical vendor, but quickly closed it at Marcus's look. "Right. Home. Good plan."
They made their way back quickly, Samantha and Kai falling into step with Marcus's purposeful stride. The magical neighborhood seemed less charming now, each floating object and supernatural display a potential mask for watching eyes.
Once inside, Marcus turned to Kai. "The wards in this place ā you said they were part of why you chose it?"
"Yeah," Kai nodded, gesturing around them. "The whole building's got old protection spells woven into the foundation. That's why the rent was so ridiculous ā supernatural security doesn't come cheap."
