Chapter 8 - A night stroll

Luck laid on his bed consumed by the sweet embrace of sleep. The bed was incredibly comfy and soft, and the air conditioner was set on chilling but with the help of his unnaturally warm blanket he kept the heat isolated.

'Take notes, these are the perfect conditions for sleep.'

At about 12 AM in the morning he suddenly rose up from his bed, put on some clothes and hopped out the window, it was time to explore the Island.

First he scaled their apartment building all the way to the top and observed the area from there. The island was beautiful at night, tall buildings rose up from the ground high up into the clouds as if attempting to greet the starry sky above.

Many parts of the city were still lit up as various people conducted their business while others went out for leisure.

This was one of his favorite pastimes while he was back in the city, he would often leap from building to building all while being hidden by the darkness as he moved swiftly across the neighborhood.

Sometimes he would see things people would rather have kept secret, and even hear some secret plots if he felt up to it.

This night was different, today he was not just out for fun, he had a secondary objective which was to number 1 - get a lay of the current environment, 2 - map out the Island to some degree and 3 - get more information about the school.

He already knew a little about the school environment because of Layla but there were still many secrets the school had that he was yet to discover.

According to her the island was divided into two parts, the part where regular citizens lived and did their work and the part where venators lived.

Entering into this part of the island was practically impossible because of how well guarded the area was. Plus sneaking into the venators quarters? Few people were that crazy.

He leaped down the top of the building letting the cold air consume him as he raced towards the ground.

His feet stuck hold in the wall of the building as he ran down accelerating towards the ground, then using the force of his landing he propelled himself up onto the second building.

He moved past several buildings hoping down to run across the road at times when the area was scarce of buildings, he was mapping the entire area in his head when something amusing caught his eye, it was a grand looking estate.

He had already strayed far from all the commercial buildings and was well towards the edge of the island.

At first glance it seemed like the Estate was completely unguarded save for a single guard at the gate but he knew it was all a facade.

'This place is actually heavily guarded,' he thought to himself.

Moments later a very expensive looking SUV drove towards the gate and the guard after confirming the identity of the drivers allowed them into the compound, the SUV was quickly surrounded by men that flooded out of the buildings.

The door of the car swung open and a young girl was escorted out of the vehicle.

'All this security for just one girl?'

They were too far away for Luck to see properly. He could have attempted to get closer to them but he was pretty sure he would be discovered.

He was really curious though and eventually fell for the temptation of using his enigma.

Normally he hated the thought of getting consumed by his enigma but he just needed a little, just small enough for him to see properly.

'It won't be significant enough to affect me,' he reasoned.

Except in cases where he was in considerable discomfort Luck could still use his enigma to a large degree, he just avoided using it all together to avoid any undesirable outcomes.

He let his energy seep into his eyes and his view was magnified to a great degree.

The girl in question was laden with bruises that still seemed fresh, she was in tattered clothes and her hands were properly bound together, it was clear that whoever did the knot put far too much effort into it.

'What did a girl probably not much older than me do to attract their attention?'

He hoped it was not the case for her sake but everything was pointing in one direction, to experiences he would rather not relive. "Could this actually be the Ea–"

"The Earth clan, yes they are." Came a voice in a low tone.

The voice belonged to a young girl that emerged from the darkness shortly after. It was as though the shadow was unwilling to let her go, tendrils of shadow still clinging on to her skin as she stepped forward.

In front of him stood Layla.

Luck was relieved that it was her and not someone else, he wasn't interested in any form of violence this generally 'peaceful' night.

Although Layla was beginning to pester him more and more, what was she doing on his evening stroll?!

"Before you even ask, I was on the roof of our building when I saw you climb up."

'So we live in the same building?' Luck had no prior knowledge of that.

"And then you decided to follow me because?"

"Because I knew you were going to do something stupid, what are you doing out here?"

"I'm just on my evening stroll."

She looked down to where the SUV was parked, the men were still busy escorting the girl farther into the compound.

"You're going to get yourself killed."

"I'm not stupid enough to enter the Earth clan's Estate, it's not like I can't beat them without my enigma." Luck said. He glanced in the captive girl's direction once more, his enigma spiking in response to his silent rage.

He quickly cut the flow of energy to his eyes.

But before he did strangely she turned looking him straight in the eyes, her solemn expression turning to a brief smile just before she was shoved into the building.

"Hmm, there are better ways to deal with this." Luck said just before he moved into the darkness. There would be other opportunities.

Layla stood now alone, she started at the building and back in the direction that Luck had left. She had a feeling that he would be far more troublesome than she had imagined.

Still the earth clan was at it again, amongst the clans they were by far the shadiest of them all and she was in the shadow clan!

She stared at the building once more before letting her enigma envelope her as she merged with the darkness.

•••

It was another school day and Luck still laid in the embrace of the unholy temptation that was his bed.

GRIIIIIIIIINNNNN!!

The loud blaring sound of an alarm clock he never remembered getting or setting up filled the room forcing him to open his eyes and find the source of the obnoxious sound.

This was definitely Ayra's doing, he had not seen her since the day she convinced him to attend classes for the first time. No doubt she wanted him to start attending classes of his own accord.

He hit the stop button on the digital alarm clock and hopped back into the bed that was way too willing to accept him back into its embrace.

Few minutes later he was finally beginning to fall asleep when the alarm blared even louder hopping from side to side on the table.

'God is this alarm clock possessed?!'

Luck stretched his hand towards the alarm clock, picked it up and flicked it right out the window.

Finally the serenity of the room was restored but it was only momentarily as a loud pounding noise assaulted his ears next.

Whatever was fighting his sleep had finally won, he had been interrupted far too many times to actually have a proper rest now.

He stormed towards the door and yanked it open only to see Ayra standing in front of him, in her hand was the alarm clock he had just disposed of, still blaring loudly.

'The little guy has ratted me out!'
