Chapter 19 - Chapter 18: Magical World

Edward currently found himself in a magical fantasy world where, like in most fantasy worlds, magic was a privilege reserved for only a few individuals.

Although the elements were abundant to the point of being infinite, only a small percentage of people possessed the ability to sense and construct magical channels within their bodies to release the elements. After undergoing systematic learning of the magical system, these individuals could grow to become what was commonly referred to as mages.

"In this world, magic is almost boundless. Even those who do not construct magical channels like mages can unconsciously absorb magical energy. With a bit of training, one can strengthen their physique beyond limits. This is how knights train themselves to become stronger," explained Edward.

Glancing at Zat, Edward noted that even though he was currently just a regular Level 2 swordsman, in the relatively combat-scarce South Border, a Level 2 swordsman was considered a pillar of strength. Except for the chief guard, who was a Level 3 swordsman in the Durin Family, others were merely apprentice swordsmen.

Upon hearing this, Zat, feeling a bit lost, asked, "So, can I use magic too? Honestly, aren't there novels about protagonists cultivating both magic and martial arts? Magic swordsmen seem so cool."

Helplessly, Edward responded, "You're thinking too much. Although both are based on elements, the control of elements by a mage and the use of magical energy by a swordsman are entirely different systems. It's like the difference between arts and sciences. Zat, you are probably the least likely person here to learn magic."

"Eh?! Really–"

Clearly not expecting to be excluded so quickly, Zat sat down, a bit disheartened. Others, however, gathered around with great interest, indicating their curiosity about the magical world.

Understanding that he had to provide more information, Edward recalled what he had learned at the Mage Tower and continued, "Simply put, everyone has the potential to become a mage, but whether you can use magic depends on your aptitude. Those with good aptitude, like me, can master all four major elements and other special elements, becoming a Grand Mage at the fastest rate. Those with average aptitude, like Helena, might only comprehend fire-element magic in the end, and their control over elements would barely allow them to reach the advanced level."

"What? Why? Don't think that everyone in this world is a freak like you!" Helena complained upon hearing Edward's words. "Back then, my mentor said that being a single-element controller would lead to faster promotion. Although the path is narrow, magic is both easy to learn and hard to master. More compatibility with elements means more dispersed focus. Originally, it should have been like this— But who knew that you, with absolutely no interest in magic, would become a Grand Mage faster than me!"

"..."

Not knowing how to respond to Helena's complaints, and having grown tired of her complaints in the past, Edward ignored the girl's resentful expression and continued, "In any case, there are four major elements: wind, fire, water, and earth. Other secondary elements are derived from these four. Mages pursue the ultimate truth in these four elements. To determine if someone has the aptitude for elemental comprehension, generally, identification devices or magic arrays are used. However, for a Grand Mage like me, a simple probe is enough."

He then reached out and held Winry's wrist. Muttering to himself, Edward said, "Hmm, the magical energy circuit in your body is barely open, but the elemental compatibility is almost zero. It's quite regrettable, Winry; you don't have the talent to become a mage."

"Is... that so..."

Wearing a disappointed expression, Winry quickly adjusted her emotions. After all, she had never expected to be able to use magic from the moment she was born until now. Confirmation was just a formality.

Edward soon continued with the tests. In the end, it was confirmed that among those present, Winry, Zat, and Lawrence had no magical talent. As for Aya...

"How is it, how is it?! Can I become a mage?!" Excitement filled Aya's face, and seeing her hopeful expression, Edward couldn't help but furrow his brows. Although he had realized that this sudden appearance of the girl was peculiar, the extent of her peculiarity had still surprised him. After all, it was impossible for a person's magical energy circuit to be completely unobstructed. Even with the best circumstances, there would still be some stagnation due to impurities within the body. However, this girl not only had no impurities but also had a completely unobstructed flow of magical energy.

Moreover, the most crucial point was that her elemental compatibility was almost zero!

Yes, she's an extremely rare waste between genius and useless!

"..."

Uncertain about how to evaluate her, Edward thought for a moment and finally couldn't help but say, "Wait until I invent a magical power bank, and you should be able to be a 100% mobile fast charger."

"???"

Soon, ignoring Aya's expression of 'I don't understand, but does that mean I'm awesome?' Edward made plans for everyone to go back and rest. However, reflecting on the magical aptitude test just now, another layer of gloom rose in his heart.

Indeed, magic was too limited in the end. Something only a few could use couldn't drive the advancement of civilization, let alone the cultural prosperity Edward envisioned.

So, how could magic, a privilege for the few, be extended to everyone? How could ordinary people enjoy the benefits of magic? Although Edward currently had no ideas about this, he understood it was a question he must find an answer to.
