Chapter 1 - Prologue

"What have you planned for your future?"

"Huh?"

My classmate, Chanse Lee, caught me off guard with his question as I looked outside the classroom window in a daze.

We were assigned to clean up after class and we were just about to pack our things and leave.

"I-Uh."

It was a week before junior high graduation. In the three years that we took class together, we never had a proper conversation. I was surprised that he initiated one with me out of nowhere, especially over something like this.

"A lot of them had already decided, but we're just about to be first years in high school. I wonder, how can they do that?"

That had been the topic of conversation for the past month. Everyone deciding which schools to go to, which clubs or extracurricular activities outside of school they can do to prep for their dream college.

"Yeah. I guess they're very passionate about the future they want."

"In my eyes, they're being too careless for their own good."

I can understand his reasoning. These past three years, Chanse has done nothing but study hard. I saw him constantly in the library reading many of those thick books and he always goes to prep school after class. He's smart, athletic and always one of the top of our class. I don't think he has ever taken time off of studying.

"I think you need to get over yourself."

Before I realized, those words had come out of my mouth. I nervously looked at his face while I covered my mouth from saying another stupid thing.

His eyes widened and his mouth was opened in shock. He quickly looked down and his lips slightly quivered.

"...You never said what you wanted for your future."

I uncovered my mouth and hesitated to say anything, "I... don't know."

He nodded, "Very well."

Chanse didn't say much after that. He just picked his bag and before he went through the door he said, "I hope I never get to see you again after graduation."

"Chanse, I'm—"

He didn't give me the opportunity to apologize. Before I knew it, he was already gone.

As I looked at him walking towards the gate from the classroom window, I realized it was the first time I've ever heard him speak outside of our classes.

"Why me?"

He's a very odd kid. High school is barely starting for us. I can't believe there are people already thinking about a time after high school. Why are they serious about their future all of a sudden?

Is that what he wanted to hear?

I take a deep breath, "My future..."

And thus graduation came around and that was the last time I ever saw my studious classmate Chanse Lee.

Or so I thought.
