This last chapter features the interruption of the narrator, who gives
a beyond-life ending to this tragic story, believing that with these
words we may find a certain consolation, a certain relief, for these
two souls that merged in the time without being able to have an
earthly farewell. However, I think it is pertinent to clarify that the
end for these two characters has already occurred, what is prayed
and outlined below are mere conjectures from the beyond, in an
imperative need for the reader to find a certain relief, see a some
hope, I can look at this story with another look. And why not, give
love one last chance, which is perhaps the most precious thing one
can achieve in this life.
Sebastián did not wake up again that day. His body succumbed to
the effects of an illness that rapidly weakened him over the course
of short weeks, his last wish was finally fulfilled, fatigue and death
awaited him and gave him his eternal rest from that life that had so
much bitterness, sadness and loneliness. flooded their earthly end.
His last efforts to leave that letter were in vain, because that night,
Lucía died of a heart attack. You see, she was in a moment of great
stress due to her work, which culminated in a sad end. Both died in
their respective apartments. That same night, Lucía, in her last
moments, thought fervently of Sebastián. Not to try to get it back.
But because a feeling of nostalgia and melancholy pursued her
through that relationship that, at that moment, for her, became a
distant memory. She missed her company. Same as him. But they
couldn't bear the sadness of being separated from each other. It is
perhaps that feeling that ended up taking their lives. It is perhaps
the sorrow through which they spent their days that ended them.
They weren't strong enough to come back. It was too late for both
of them. The misfortunes of her life denied her the ability to enjoy
it.
In any case, her letter would not have reached her. Well, the next morning the post office entered into a massive protest that led to the
burning of thousands of letters and postcards that people had sent
the day before so that their loved ones could receive them. His
lovers. Their families. His friends. Sebastian died without having
properly said goodbye to Lucia, and she did so without finding out
about the illness that Sebastian suffered that deteriorated him until
it took away her last breath. Fate played her cards. Leaving those
who once loved each other so much without a farewell, leaving this
earthly plane without a final "goodbye." A last kiss. One last hug.
I am sure that Sebastian, in those final "seven minutes" where our
memories repeat themselves, giving us a last review of what we
were, what we lived, only remembered their relationship, those
entire "seven minutes" were dedicated to her, her reason to live, to
feel. He remembered Lucía, her kisses, her caresses, her souls
finally intertwined. For him, she represented her world and her life
revolved around her person. Love represented everything for that
young man. She was not his mother, they were not his friends. Not
even his classes or his students. Lucia was his true and only
passion. Only she crossed his mind at the end of him, as she was
present throughout his life from the first sight of him.
Surely, her memory gave way to an "eighth minute," in which the
two of them were finally together. An idea that may become
possible because the love he had was incalculable, and I fervently
believe, his own life, gave him this last gift as a farewell. In this
extra time, Sebastian and Lucia lay embraced again, laughing
together in some lost town in Argentina. The two of them alone, in
love again. It is that eighth minute, the things that we would have
wanted for our life, our "perfect life" finally materialize, although
only in our mind, but who cares!... Even if it is only in our mind, it is
necessary to be able to experience This is our end, our last wish, he
asked death for that before leaving, a last moment in which he and
Lucía would meet again. No fears this time. No distance. Without
thoughts. That was the life Sebastian would have wanted. The life
that was denied him by his own decisions. For fear of taking the
reins and launching into what he loved and desired most. I don't
think this implies a tragic ending. I don't think that for him his
entire story was tragic in the end, because he got the final result he
wanted in that eighth minute that eternalized in his memory. It's the last thing Sebastian saw. Just the two of them, living their love,
without pain this time. Remembering what they were, what they
could be if it had not been only for decisions and emotions that
stopped in the middle of their destinies.
I choose to think that if there is another life, he would have looked
for it. He would have found her. And in that other life they would
have realized what he refused to do in this one. But we all know, or
rather, until now we know, that we only have this life. There is
nothing else. Not even this ending created by the author assures us
that this happened. There is nothing but this life. And in the event
that this life were to repeat itself in a loop, I am sure that Sebastián
would gladly repeat it, just to relive everything he experienced with
Lucía. Sometimes we overestimate what love, sadness, loneliness
can generate in a person's life and what this can change in the way
he sees his life. For him, that letter will remain, which are only
ashes at this moment, once again betrayed by the public media. For
her, there will remain that letter that he wrote many years ago,
which symbolized her eternal love, materialized in her, that
Sebastian was unable to see. Only memories of the two will remain.
For Lucía, perhaps Sebastian has not meant everything that he
meant to her, that does not mean that the two have loved each
other. In different intensities possible, but at the end of the day love
is love. No one was guilty of his death, it was just natural causes. It
is not fair to find blame in this love story. It's just seeing the natural
outcome of life, one in which the two knew how to make each other
happy. Together they knew how to get through life. The moment
when this was perhaps most evident was when they were
separated. The dreams that Sebastian had were an alarm, a
repressed desire for what he wanted for his life. Of what he needed
in his life. He needed Lucia. She him too.
But in the end, only that "Letter to Lucía" will remain. One last
declaration of love from Sebastian. His perpetuity in Lucia's life
was present at the time of writing that letter. Her chest was tight.
She was dying. She was hoping that all of this was just a bad
dream. When he stopped thinking about that "bad dream" and the
reality of it became present, his body gave way. His soul will never
give way. I am sure that her heart still beats for love for her partner. Her soul lives through her memories. Through that letter, which
immortalized both, in this temporary life.
The end.
