Chapter 20 - Chapter 17: The Northern Tribe

**Encounter with the Cat People**

About six months before Alex and Thrain reached the northern region, their journey had led them through dense forests and snow-covered plains. The cold was biting, and the landscape was harsh, but their spirits were high, driven by the promise of new adventures.

One day, as they were traveling through a particularly dense forest, Alex noticed something unusual. Hidden among the trees were figures with white furry ears and bright blue eyes that glowed like stars. The figures moved silently, watching them with curiosity and caution.

"Thrain," Alex whispered, stopping in his tracks. "Do you see that?"

Thrain squinted into the shadows, then nodded. "Yes, I see them. Cat people, if I'm not mistaken."

As they stood still, one of the figures stepped forward. It was a young girl, half-cat and half-human, with white fur and large, expressive blue eyes. She looked at them warily, her ears twitching nervously.

Alex raised his hands in a gesture of peace. "We are not here to hurt you," he said gently.

The girl did not respond, her eyes flicking between Alex and Thrain.

**Thrain Takes the Lead**

Thrain stepped forward, placing a reassuring hand on Alex's shoulder. "Let me handle this," he said, his voice calm and confident. He then turned to the girl and spoke in a language Alex did not recognize.

"I am Thrain, and this is Alex," he said, his words flowing smoothly in the foreign tongue. "We are just passing through. We mean you no harm."

The girl's eyes widened slightly at Thrain's words. She responded in the same language, her voice soft and melodic. Thrain nodded, listening carefully.

After a few moments of conversation, the girl seemed to relax. She gestured for them to follow her, leading them deeper into the forest. The other figures emerged from the shadows, revealing themselves as more cat people, each one as graceful and silent as the first.

**Meeting the Tribe**

The girl led them to a clearing where a small village stood. The huts were made of wood and thatch, blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings. The cat people watched curiously as Alex and Thrain entered the village, their bright eyes filled with curiosity.

Thrain continued to speak with the girl, who introduced herself as Yuki. She explained that their tribe was known as the Snowclaw, a peaceful group who lived in harmony with the forest. They were wary of outsiders but welcomed those who showed respect and kindness.

"We are honored to meet you," Thrain said, bowing slightly. "We seek only to pass through your lands on our journey north."

Yuki nodded, a shy smile on her face. She spoke to the other villagers, and soon Alex and Thrain were offered food and shelter for the night.

**Staying with Yuki's Family**

Yuki invited Alex and Thrain to stay with her family. Their home was a cozy hut with a warm fire burning in the hearth. Yuki's family welcomed them with open arms, offering them a place to rest and recover from their travels.

As they sat by the fire, enjoying a hearty meal, Alex's curiosity got the better of him. "Yuki, may I ask how age works among your people?" he inquired.

Yuki tilted her head, her ears twitching with interest. "Why do you want to know?" she asked.

Alex smiled, trying to put her at ease. "I'm interested in understanding more about different cultures. It's for research, really. I'd like to know about the lifespan of cat people."

Yuki nodded, understanding his curiosity. "We live for about 200 years. Our aging process is different from humans. For example, I am 34 years old, but I appear much younger because our aging is slower."

Alex's eyes widened in amazement. "That's incredible. You don't look a day over twenty."

Yuki chuckled softly. "Thank you. It's a blessing and a curse, I suppose. We remain youthful for many years, but it can be difficult for others to gauge our age."

**Learning and Sharing**

The evening passed with stories and laughter. Yuki's family shared tales of their ancestors, the challenges they faced, and the harmony they maintained with the forest. Thrain and Alex reciprocated by sharing their own adventures and the places they had seen.

Yuki's father, an elder of the tribe, spoke of the wisdom that came with their long lifespans. "We have time to learn, to grow, and to understand the world in ways that shorter-lived beings might not," he said, his voice filled with a serene wisdom.

Alex found himself deeply fascinated by their way of life. The Snowclaw tribe's connection to nature and their unique perspective on time and aging offered him a new understanding of the world.

**A Night of Rest**

As the night grew late, Yuki showed Alex and Thrain to their sleeping quarters. The beds were simple but comfortable, made of soft furs and blankets that provided warmth against the cold night air.

"Thank you for your hospitality," Alex said to Yuki as he settled into bed.

Yuki smiled, her blue eyes twinkling. "You are welcome, Alex. Rest well. Tomorrow, we can show you more of our village and the surrounding forest."

Thrain, already half-asleep, murmured his thanks as well.

As Alex lay down, he reflected on the day's events. The encounter with the Snowclaw tribe had been unexpected but enriching. He felt a deep sense of gratitude for their kindness and hospitality. As he drifted off to sleep, he knew that this experience would stay with him for a long time, shaping his understanding of the world and its diverse inhabitants.
