Chapter 81 - The Mask

Head still swimming at the bloody scenes witnessed, as well as the notion of infinite money, Jake ran home from the arena. Nearly crashing into a car, he maneuvered his way through the city, reaching back home at tne suburbs.

As he reached home, he encountered the old man, watering his plants on his garden. Seeing a beaming Jake, he directed his attention towards him, raising an eye in question. Noticing his curiose gaze, Jake told him about his decision about joining Bloodfall Arena for his sparring (he opted to omit the fact that he would be earning a buckload of money from the matches as well).

On the other hand, old man Edward just kept quiet, before heading back in, and shuffling through the back. All Jake could hear were soft thumps of books being thrown across, clangs of objects being piled on topnof each other in precarious positions, and some swearing, as Edward seemed to encounter a lot of mishaps in his pile of... antiques.

After what seemed like an eternity, a very dusty and cobweb filled Edward came out, holding a small, plastic(?) looking box.

As Jake leaned over to see what it was, he seemed to feel a sense of déjà vu. When he got closer, he was shocked, shocked to see that on top of the box was a symbol. Not just any symbol, but the symbol, the insignia of what started this whole mess of a journey:

In a weird circle, were small semi-circles, in a hook like manner, inlaid inside a larger circle, reminiscent of a star. At the center of it, surrounded by the star, we're the same oaths, but this time, more legible to him. They read, to what he could discern, "... By our mantra..."

Jake felt the weight of those words. While still illegible for the most part, he somehow felt respect, even veneration for them. Just as he was about to ponder more, Edward opened the box.

Inside laid a flimsy, plain looking mask. It was oval in nature, barely reminiscent of a face, nothing more than a piece of cloth. Yet despite these reservations, when he wanted to ask more about it, he somehow forgot what he was talking about.

Feeling weirded out, another attempt was made yet the same thing still happened. Feeling persistant, he attempted again, only to fail. Repeatedly he tried, and repeatedly he failed. Finally, no longer able to tolerate it, he reached out to the box, and lifted up high in the air. Just as he was about to smash it, a rough, burly hand caught his outstretched arm.

"Now, now, don't be too mad." Edward consoled him, trying his best to restrain his chuckle. Sensing the the laughter within him, Jake got irate at the scene, and was about lunge at Edward, but Edward put his hands up, before explaining "Jake, don't get mad at it, this is what the mask does. Gave you heard of artefacts?" Stopping midway, Jake realises what he was trying to say. "You mean this is an artefact?" Edward nodded sagely, "Yep, and a pretty high one at that. This bad boy allows you to hide yourself, and I don't mean as in invisibile by disappearing completely into thin air (although it can do that). I mean, disappearing as if you are just a drop of water in the ocean. If you go into a sea of people, any camera, any type of surveillance or divination, it would block it, and redirect it somewhere else, kind of... like...umm... as if you had your entire existence forgotten by people, though not that bad (trust me, it's worse than you can imagine)."

With the added commentary (jokes), Jake just focused on the important facts, ignoring the minor details. Witnessing this, Edward just sighed and shook his head. He picked up his watering can, before telling Jake "Go now. I know you're too impatient for tomorrow. Go and sleep now. Oh, and before I forget, what about sch-", only to see wind where Jake was, and a loud bang.

Chuckling, Edward went back inside as well.

Ah, youth, what a fun time.
