Chapter 72 - Remnant Of Era Gone By...

As Jake falls deeper into his dreams he encounters the vast, black sky once more. The dark cosmos, illuminated with nothing but the three doors, once again free light, but from an unexpected source. Nestled im-between the gates was a book.

The book.

Jake thought that he had lost it in the ruins, and he couldn't have been much happier than ever. Even though he knew next to nothing about the book, except the name, he knew enough.

He knew that people would kill, just to get even a smidgen of a glance at its myriad pages. Pages that held knowledge as vast the universe, or even possibly, the multiverse.

As Jake kindred what the book really was, suddenly, it lit up. Before he could do anything, the three gates spun rapidly, before merging together in a large explosion. It dragged Jake into itself before he could even scream in despair.

Whirling through space and time, he couldn't help but feel queasy, his stomach churning at the journey. Just as he could bot hold back his vomit in any longer, the surroundings changed.

Bright light illuminated through the broken down remnants of fabric held high. As the young man rubbed his eyes, he realised he was not at the sea of mind. Jake stood up, jumping from the cot, panicking at the thought of travelling through time.

"Soldiers, arms yourselves to the foot! Hellreants incoming!" Just as the tinnitus faded from Jake's ears, sudden blasts of energy were felt, with air starting to burn. Dull thuds soon followed, followed by unearthly howls that shook his insides, rattling his organs to their very limits.

He lurched into the ground, stomach vibrating too rapidly. Around him, explosions occurred, with war cries being sung all around tbe camp.

Though the battle was loud and fearsome, it did not last long. The howls soon ended, but not before inflicting heavy damage across the camp. Just as Jake finished dry hurling, two soldiers entered his tent, holding two weapons that looked eerily similar to what was unearthed on Earth, 153 years ago.

Just then, one of them, evidently a male, aimed the... gun(?) at him, commanding him "Soldier number 123, Benson. You are hereby under court martial for not responding to the responding to the call to arms at early 0745 hours. You are hereby commanded to march to command, where we shall see to your sentence. Now, move it!"

Still visible confused, Jake had no time to collect himslef, for he was soon being marched into the general's office to recipe his sentencing. On the way, he continually pondered on what had exactly happened. The last thing he remembered before waking up here were the fusion of the three doors, as well as the book. Yes, what happened to the book!?

A sudden cry of pain jolted Jake from his pondering. As he turned his head to see what happened, he soon met face to face with a soldier, his face ripped halfway off, blood still flooding down his face, along with... wires?

Once this observation was made, he could no longer ignore the tiny details. Along the path laid hundreds of soldiers, blown into several chunks of flesh, along with what appeared to be pieces of burning wood, that somehow seemed to be still burning.

Men and women, mixed together in piles of broken flesh, moaned in pain, as the medics shuttle down, trying their best to separate them, so that they could heal them back. Civil robots dragged long planks of bronze lumber, the same kind that was seen in the ruin, albeit more complete.

Now very confused, Jake asked the soldier to his right "Uhm, Mr.? Miss? What year is this, where are we, what are we doing here?"

The soldiers stopped, with the one on question turning their head. They removed their helmets, revealing itself to be a female, humanoid yet not. Her silvery hair, in a long pony tail, sparkled, with short green hue(?) pulsating through her strands. Her face was of a grayish hie, angular lines etched on the surface of her skin. They shone a bright white light, illuminating the rest of her fair face. Though what struck Jake odd the most were her eyes. They were mechanical in nature, with concentric circles overlaying over each other, like gears. Their bronze hue gave them a tint of age, as if they had witnessed everything from the beginning of time itself.

Taking a long stare at him, her pupils spun around, like camera lens, before answering him in a slight monotonous tone "You may refer me as soldier 149. I identify as female, in the terminology of you organic beings. The year is 150,125 AE, 27th of October. We are at planet F-135T, and we are currently here at an expedition to expand our hold over the lawless regions of the Underweiden galaxy."
