Gu Shi Yi frowned and contemplated for a moment before saying,
"I reckon that woman must have some sort of trick up her sleeve... maybe she's secretly drugged that man!"
"This..."
Li Yaner cocked her head and thought it over,
"I really hadn't considered that..."
After recalling their previous conversation, she remembered the way the Eldest Young Master Sun looked disdainfully at his wife in front of the mirror. Yet, after the Eldest Young Madam of the Sun Family touched his chest, he immediately became aroused. Something did seem fishy!
Gu Shi Yi stood up and paced back and forth in the room, thinking aloud,
"I'm guessing that woman, after having given birth to three children with a half-demon body, though the first two do have Spirit Roots, are impatient and murderers at the slightest provocation. As they reach higher realms, their lethality only increases; they're like two ticking time bombs. And the youngest daughter's lower body has already undergone Demonization – it's uncertain if she can even be kept alive. So... this woman wants to have another child, a normal child, which is why... she must've resorted to some unspeakable method on her husband!"
However, this woman's understanding of biology apparently wasn't as good as Gu Shi Yi's. In such cases, the quality of the "stuff" was very poor and it was hardly easy to conceive. Even if she did become pregnant, the child born might have issues.
Li Yaner thought for a moment and nodded,
"I hadn't paid attention before, but now that you mention it, it does seem possible!"
But what did this have to do with them?
Could they not focus on the important matters at hand?
Little Mud Child was going crazy with frustration on the table, stamping his feet incessantly,
"Can you please talk about the matter at hand?"
Gu Shi Yi replied feeling wronged,
"I am seriously discussing it..."
After some thought, he added,
"If she were a decent woman, why would she resort to such schemes..."
He paused, then continued,
"You mentioned she was also inciting her husband to covet the Buddha's relic of the Gu Family. I heard from my grandfather and father when I was young that our ancestor in the Nascent Soul Stage acquired it many years ago from a Senior Monk. However, the Cultivation Technique of the Gu Family is completely different from that of the Buddhist sect, so we could never truly bring out the full potential of the Buddha's relic. It's just placed in the Gu Family's secret ground to suppress evil spirits and serve the purpose of Heart-Cleansing..."
He pondered some more before saying,
"It's true that she didn't lie; that relic can indeed calm the mind. However... if her two sons have inherited the blood of the Demon Clan, the wildness in their temperament cannot be fully eradicated. I'm afraid the Buddha's relic may only alleviate the symptoms and not cure the root cause..."
After walking around the room with his hands behind his back for a few more moments, he mentioned,
"Now that you bring it up, I vaguely recall when my biological father took me to confront the Qian Family to settle affairs. He had a big argument with my maternal grandfather and left in anger. I vaguely remember something being mentioned about the Buddha's relic..."
Now that Gu Shi Yi was reminiscing about this matter, he remembered the ashen face of his maternal grandfather. If his biological mother had been in front of him at the time, his grandfather might very well have committed a dutiful extermination of kin to give the Gu Family an explanation.
She had thought before that it was just because her mother had embarrassed both families, but now it seemed likely it wasn't just because of the embarrassment. The Qian Family's inability to borrow the Buddha's relic was also probably one of the reasons. And her mother too, who didn't run away earlier or later, chose to do so when she was nearly six years old, on the verge of the Qian Family getting their hands on something. Wasn't that running away at this time deliberately trying to infuriate her biological father?
Gu Shi Yi frowned deeply, finally managing to focus on the important matters at hand, and said thoughtfully,
"It seems... that over the years, the Qian Family has never given up on the Gu Family's Buddha's relic..."
So, was it possible... that having her cheap cousin impersonate the Gu Family heiress was also for the Buddha's relic?
Gu Shi Yi felt he had vaguely grasped some of the truth, yet it didn't seem so simple. Could all this effort be for just a relic?
What special significance did the Buddha's relic have for the Qian Family?
Li Yaner pondered a moment and said,
"Going through all this trouble to have your cousin impersonate you and return to the Gu Family – if she could take control, great, and if not, marrying into the Sun Family would still make her the Eldest Young Madam, and she could plot to acquire the Buddha's relic. This would be a profitable deal. Shiyi... it seems your maternal grandfather's schemes have been in the making for more than a day or two!"
Gu Shi Yi nodded,
"However, I always feel that it's not what the Qian Family really wants. The Buddha's relic is probably the key..."
As the two discussed for a while, they felt that the truth was almost discernible yet not that straightforward. In the midst of their conversation, Li Yaner suddenly remembered something, slapped her thigh, and exclaimed,
"Ah, I've become so confused by your rant I've forgotten something..."
Previously they had only spoken about the couple's bedroom affairs,
