David's stomach churned at the thought, but he knew Carter was baiting him. He couldn't trust a word out of his mouth. Still, playing along, even just for a moment, might buy him the time he needed.
"You want me to work for you?" David asked, keeping his voice calm. "And what would that involve?"
Carter's grin widened, his eyes gleaming with malice. "Oh, simple tasks at first. Managing certain interests. Ensuring certain people stay… compliant. And, of course, making sure your little empire doesn't interfere with mine."
David could feel the weight of Carter's words, the implicit threat behind them. If he agreed to this, he'd be falling for Carter's trap. But if he refused… he glanced at Matt, who was barely hanging on, his bloodshot eyes pleading silently.
"I'll think about it," David said slowly, hoping to buy just a bit more time.
