Chapter 43 - Meghalaya - The Abode of Clouds

Aadhvik and Sara continued their exploration of the northeastern states with Meghalaya, known as the "Abode of Clouds." Meghalaya's breathtaking landscapes, cascading waterfalls, and unique culture offered a perfect blend of adventure and serenity.

Their journey began in Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya, often referred to as the "Scotland of the East." They visited the Ward's Lake, a beautiful man-made lake surrounded by lush gardens. The serene ambience and the colourful blooms made it a perfect spot for a stroll. They also explored the Shillong Peak, the highest point in the city, offering panoramic views of the rolling hills and the cityscape below.

In Shillong, they visited the Don Bosco Museum, one of the finest museums in India showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the northeastern states. The museum's extensive collection of artefacts, traditional costumes, and interactive displays provided a deep insight into the diverse cultures of the region.

From Shillong, they travelled to Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on Earth. The journey through the winding roads and mist-covered hills was an adventure in itself. In Cherrapunji, they explored the mesmerizing Nohkalikai Falls, the tallest plunge waterfall in India. The sight of the water cascading down the cliffs into the emerald pool below was simply breathtaking.

They also visited the Mawsmai Cave, a limestone cave with stunning formations of stalactites and stalagmites. Navigating through the narrow passages and marvelling at the natural sculptures was an exhilarating experience. The nearby Seven Sisters Falls, a series of seven cascading waterfalls, added to the natural beauty of Cherrapunji.

Their journey continued to the village of Mawlynnong, often referred to as the "Cleanest Village in Asia." The village's pristine cleanliness and vibrant gardens were a testament to the community's commitment to maintaining their environment. They explored the living root bridges, and unique natural wonders created by weaving the roots of rubber trees over decades. Walking on these bridges, surrounded by lush greenery, was a surreal experience.

In Mawlynnong, they also visited the Sky View, a bamboo structure offering stunning views of the Bangladesh plains. The village's serene ambience and the warm hospitality of the locals made their stay truly memorable.

Next, they travelled to the picturesque town of Dawki, located on the banks of the Umngot River. The crystal-clear waters of the river, reflecting the surrounding hills and the blue sky, created a stunning sight. They enjoyed a boat ride on the river, marvelling at the beauty of the underwater world visible through the transparent water.

Their exploration took them to the town of Jowai, known for its beautiful landscapes and vibrant culture. They visited the Thadlaskein Lake, a serene lake surrounded by rolling hills and lush greenery. The nearby Nartiang Monoliths, a collection of ancient monolithic stones, offered a fascinating glimpse into the region's history.

In the Laitlum Canyons, they experienced the breathtaking beauty of the deep gorges and rolling hills. The panoramic views from the canyon rim were simply awe-inspiring, and the peaceful ambience provided a perfect setting for reflection and relaxation.

Their journey through Meghalaya concluded with a visit to the village of Nongriat, home to the famous Double-Decker Living Root Bridge. The trek to the village, through dense forests and across numerous suspension bridges, was challenging but immensely rewarding. The sight of the unique double-decker bridge, created by intertwining the roots of rubber trees, was a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the local communities.

As they reflected on their journey through Meghalaya, Aadhvik and Sara felt a deep sense of wonder and gratitude for the experiences they had shared.
